Cats are affected just like humans are. The difference is, we can speak. They cannot. Therefore you HAVE to tap into their psyche and know your cat.

The other morning I immediately knew there was something up with my cat by the way she was sitting on my bed instead of lying comfortably and later I thought she was either sick or maybe broke a bone jumping from her cat tree. I took her to the vet and they couldn't figure it out. She's eating a little but still acting very weird and keeping to herself. Her sister hisses at her 😢

@@mandyinseattleI’m so glad this video popped up, because I was wondering what was going on with my cats as well. They seem a lot less active, even depressed, especially one cat we’re trying to figure out what the heck is going on, even after taking him to the vet.

@@Gloriagal78 wow, that's so crazy. I wonder if it's the change in light. How weird that so many cats are experiencing the same thing at the same time. I'm really worried that mine might be an underlining disease, it seems so serious. I'll try to get her to play the next time she comes out from hiding.

Interesting! I have it the other way around because of my autism. I get really overstimulated because of the sun/light in summer... And that basically always end up in depression. These shorter days finally give me a bit more engery.

I’m Autistic too and this explains A LOT. I actually don’t notice the difference because this time of year my bearded dragon goes into hibernation and when my scale baby plays dead for three months I tend to spiral into a depressive episode. Thankfully I’ve started pulling myself out of it and I’m starting to get back into my regular routine.

I’ve struggled with SAD all my life, and living in Scandinavia, those dark months are truly oppressive. Nothing makes you lose the will to live like a good old 14:30 Stockholm sunset. It never occurred to me that it affected cats too. I think I never noticed a change because the outdoor cats I know obviously have a major change in behavior (curling up inside in the warmth) when their territory gets covered in snow during those months, and that overshadows more subtle behavior changes due to daylight. But in hindsight it makes sense that cats would be affected too. After all, both of our species belong much closer to the equator than this.

So true. It's getting very cold here in Michigan, which means closed windows. There's a big difference in my girl Babettes' behavior, and it's hard to see because she doesn't understand why she can't have them open all the time. So when I'm home, I constantly open/close them for her. It's a real pain, but anything that makes my girl happy, I do😺❤️

I work from home and my cat insists on being in my office all day while I'm working. He likes to jump up on my desk, so I put a cat condo and a floor-to-ceiling climbing pole with platforms at various heights in front of a window. I then got a bird feeder and placed it just outside the window. Needless to say, this keeps him occupied for hours at a time. It also tires him out and every couple of hours he naps on my desk.
Good to know that this will help with his S.A.D.! I wish mine were so easy to deal with.

I used to free feed Link, but when I saw how little that helped when he got over fed, I managed to cut down. I know on the package of the dry food, it says how much a cat is supposed to eat every day. So I fill up Link’s bowl, so he can eat that whenever he wants (he is trying to adjust so he can eat when needed, but still can save the food until the next day). He gets wet food twice a day. 1 tsp in the morning and 1 tsp in the evening.
Now that it’s easier to keep a track of how much he’s eating, I can actually see that he started to lose weight, so he’s becoming a healthier cat now ❤ He is more energetic and that makes me so happy. It’s easier and funnier to play with him now 🥰

@@karajalbert6074 I just stir in about a teaspoon of it into her canned food and mix in about 3-5 tablespoons of water into the wet food's "gravy." She seems to like it and it helps her stay regular😋 Maybe try a teeny amount of pumpkin to start with kitty's fave food that has gravy add a tiny bit of water n stir it together. I mix it in a tiny bowl first then pour it onto her plate. (Use the pure pumpkin in a can and not any pumpkin pie mix stuff. I get it from Walmart. I have depression myself. Whenever one of my kitties starts acting depressed, (it doesn't happen too often) that cat gets all of the cuddles. I know that's what I want when I'm in a bad place. It's worked pretty well so far ❤ they also seem to notice it in each other and snuggle up in "cat piles" to soothe. I don't see too many negative moods that last very long. They comfort each other too.

That's one thing I really love about cats. I often think I am hiding how I feel pretty well, and it might work on the human members of my family, but never with the cats. Without fail, they are here when I am needing them. They sit on me and purr. I fractured my radial head last spring and a physiotherapist recommended using a tens machine and a warm towel. I didn't have a cast or splint and neglected the sling because it didn't fit right, but somehow my cat knew exactly where to sit her warm and purring self. I had never broken a bone before, but the recovery seemed very fast!
I'm so sorry about your depression. I'm glad that you have cats with you. When nothing helps you feel better or even different, they're such good company. When they're not offering a soothing, grounding, non-judgemental presence, they're still wonderful distractions. ♡

My cats, however, are indoor/outdoor cats. They love playing outside. However, it is just not as much fun when it is pouring down rain. Here in the Northwest, we have a wet season and a dry season, and the soggy season is here.

Maybe you’re strapping it too tight? It doesn’t have to be that snug. And you do have to introduce it to them gently. Leave it lying around at first a few days in spots they hang out in so they don’t associate it immediately with having someone putting them into this thing, put it on and leave it for a while and then take it off a couple times for a few days w/o trying to attach a leash or give them a walk so they get used to the feel of it. And I heard it’s normal for cats to dislike it at first and flop down on the floor and do things like walk low to the ground when they have it on like it’s heavy before they get used to it.

hey! so we have a few (safe) outdoor items for our lil babies, and they love them! they each have a harness, but this isn’t for walking them it’s more so they can graze if we’re at a park or backyard, etc. What we mostly do, though, is either take them out in our (roomy) cat backpack OR we got the wedyvko stroller from amazon! both of our cats love these items and it’s perfect because when it’s colder i just line them with blankets (which they love-more blankets = more biscuits).

It takes about a week for our cats to adjust to the change, longer for me lol. I we left time in its natural state, there'd be less of a dramatic change with SAD! Stop DST. FYI: There are 24% more heart attacks after the springtime DST change?

I'm so pleased you addressed this ,it defiantly happens and can impact some cats quite a lot . My senior boy (sadly passed this year ) went through this every autumn like clockwork ,you could tell he was unhappy about the seasonal change .It generally lasted for 3-4 weeks before he seemed to accept that summer was over and adjust .I have recently adopted a 1 yr old female and am noticing a slight slow down in her too atm ,mainly less enthusiastic play .Introducing a new toy has helped ,and opening the window a tiny bit in the morning so she can listen to the birds outside ,smell the air etc ,also engages her interest .The most effective thing I have found is to keep play time interesting by making toys disappear behind objects or into gaps between furniture etc and moving around the house .Encouraging pouncing ,jumping and scrabbling things out with her paws as well as chasing .So far she seems pretty happy and is certainly always ready for her meals .

Here's something different to think about. I live in Sweden above the Arctic circle. Where in the Summer we have 24 hours of daylight ,and right now we're moving into the darkest part of the year where there'll be the opposite. What to do? Nothing really! This is how we live, humans and our felines. And we might not like it all the time, but somehow we adapt with the Seasons. We are awake longer in Summer, sleep more in the winter. Just wanted to share this.

I love the idea of regular feelding, but my work schedule is terrible for that. Luckily, they know that when I get home, it's a meal. Also, my kitties just get me crawling on the ground on all fours (which they absolutely love - I guess cuz I'm a big cat??? lol) to roll around on the floor with them. I know, I'm a crazy cat lady lol.

My cat have this "kind of". Basically he really dislike being outside, he's both an outside cat and an inside cat, neutered, whenever temperatures go below freezing. And for the past 2 weeks we've had temperatures between -10°C (14°F) even below, he's only been outside in short bursts before coming back in and i've definitely noticed him being agitated and worried

Hi Jackson! I recommend you to every cat parent I know. And I can tell how much they know about cats if they’ve already watched your videos ☺️
Those who haven’t probably think I have parasocial issues 😅
I commented about this on your recent post, but I use a happy lamp (along with medications and therapy) for the dark time change. I’m in Canada and the days get real short.
Are happy lamps safe for my kitty?

About a month ago, one of the cats from our family acted very strange and absolutely unlike herself. She's usually very playful and energetic, mostly prefers to spend the entire day outside sun-bathing. For about a few days, she started sleeping in my brother's bed. She never used to go there, but she tends to find her sleeping places in various different places, no matter if there's a lot of people or not, so it wasn't very weird, except, she slept all day and only went out a few times to eat and do her business. It started when the day was getting shorter. I should mention, my brother's room is almost the most isolated room in the whole house, no one except him is there, and with him being at work most of the day, it's very, very calm there.
So, one day, it was after a few days of her sleeping in that room, she came out 1st time that day at about 2pm. Immediately, I noticed something weren't quite right. She seemed overly cautious, as if she was scared of something. She kept looking out on the door and windows. Any tiny sounds, and she'd already be on her fours. If I moved too suddenly, or someone else entered the room, she'd run to hide behind a wardrobe. She didn't want to eat, she was scared of going out from the room, and stood entire day in front of the patio doors. Usually her standing there, meant that she wants to go out, so I opened it for her a few times. She'd take a few steps outside, sit a few minutes and then go back. She felt a little better when I closed the door, she calmed down a little bit, even came to sleep on my lap twice, but every time she heard a noise by the door, she'd go back to hiding.
Most of the day, I spend sitting next to her by her hiding spot. It was very concerning and worrisome, it never happened before. I thought maybe the reason why she kept going to my brother's room was to hide from something? But she didn't seem like she was scared before.
The next day though, everything went back to normal, she went outside a bit more frequently, wanted to eat every few minutes as per usual, and had her zoomies twice a day. Vet didn't find anything bad with her health, nor any injury. I still wonder why was she acting like that out of sudden. Did something happened outside? But then she wasn't acting scared when I opened the patio doors for her, though. Maybe it could be related with the weather and the fact that it's getting colder and darker sooner? I have no idea, honestly. She didn't show any sings of being scared since then anymore.

Pip’s been mad at me the last week because he wants to go for the OTHER walk in the OTHER yard, not this silly cold one. He thinks I’m incompetent.
But he’s not sleeping more. He’s sleeping less. He’s bored, because it’s too cold to sit in the mud room watching the birds and squirrels all day, and it’s too cold for his walk to be as long. He’s bouncing off the walls.

I would love some advice on what to do! My outdoor camera has picked up a cat outside at night. My cats aren’t bothered by our outdoor guest, but I’m not sure what to do. I’m not sure how old this cat is and if I should attempt to catch it and take it to the shelter. I don’t know if it’s spayed or neutered. I also don’t know if it is someone’s outdoor cat. In my area there are a lot of stray animals (cats and dogs). People’s pets also get out all the time, but also a lot of people have outdoor only cats (I don’t know why). The last thing I want to do is take someone’s outdoor cat to a shelter. We are in NM and our outdoor camera has also been picking up a small red fox at night. With the fox and the weather getting colder, I don’t want to just let this cat stay outside. Every week I see at least one dead cat or dog on the roads. Any advice on what to do? I would love a video on what to do if you find cats outside.

I'm learning about cats and saving so I can Catify my place before I adopt. If you haven't yet, could you consider making a video about helping a newly adopted cat to use the litter box instead of spraying around the home? Thanks for considering it!

I think all mammals have the full range of emotions. The only things they don't have that we do are the ability for higher reason and moral judgments. Because they can't speak to us we need to be able to read them.

    Hi Jackson Galaxy,
I wrote the following to myself and posted it on Facebook:
Humans have a lot in common with cats:
    1. They're aesthetically pleasing, usually, when they put effort into their appearance
    2. They need to feel safe, confident and independent
    3. They also need to socialize with others
    4. They don't respond well to punishment
    5. They need to exercise 30 minutes to an hour every day
    6. They need to curate their diets and environments to make it liveable for them.
6a. They need and love to be clean.
    7. They need and love to sleep
    8. They need and love to play
    9. Cats need and love to use their instincts to hunt; we need and love to use our minds to work. It's analogous.
So maybe when you think about how you would treat your cat, turn the thinking around to how you treat yourself and your people.

Can a cat be "unspoiled"? Can a totally spoiled cat (he's been free-fed since forever, instead of fed meal times) be transformed into a correctly-fed cat? How would one do that without too much trauma?

The human circadian rhythm is reset by seeing bright light, such as a sunrise. Left without this cue, our body clocks actually run on a 26 hour cycle. When this happens our body clocks drift out of sync from the external clocks we use to regulate wake-up, work, meal time, and bed time: when days get shorter, we can end up trying to go to sleep when we are not tired, waking up when our bodies are not ready to wake up, eat when our bodies are not ready to process food, etc. This then leads to chronic tiredness and malaise, which then can bring depression, all of which are symptoms of SAD. This is why light therapy (10,000 lux at a set time every day) is effective for humans: it resets our body clock and keeps it in sync with the external clock.
It never occurred to me that my cats would have a similar issue. I don't see how light therapy would work with cats -- I think they would be annoyed if I set up a very bright LED lamp right over their breakfast nook -- but setting their meal and play times to the sun rather than the clock should have a very similar effect for them. Thanks for the video.

My cat, Star, knows my alarms. In her mind, ok you're up at ypur computer, time for my (Dental) treats and can of food. I usually can push it to 6:40am before she's sitting in front of my monitors, but this time of year, I'm "late" and she won't even let me clock in before she starts bugging me. 🐈 She does not like daylight savings time at all!!!

We give our cat a small amount of dry food that's always out in a bowl. He doesn't over eat, we put more food in the bowl probably ever 3-4 days. Do you recommend only putting dry food out at a specific time, and only enough for a few bites? He eats his wet meal at 6pm, even during the time change and all the meowing. We stick to 6pm every night of the year. He does go outside around 4pm everyday and comes home for dinner at 6pm, then stays in the rest of the night. He it super scheduled. Sometimes in summer he gets out after dinner but not for long. Do you think his schedule makes sense? I know you don't love cats being outdoors, but he is like a child and always gets home by curfew. I'd love to hear what you think about it, and his eating. He is super vocal, and never let's us forget his daily schedule! 😊
