While I don't miss the long load times they caused, the Wii U was the last Nintendo operating system with a ton of personality to it. The Switch feels so cold and lifeless in comparison.

That probably what made the Nintendo Switch much faster & powerful, the lack of music and special home-menu features. But I do agree that the Wii U is better on so many aspects, but not every single thing, of course.

This system singlehandedly gave Nintendo the cold shock of realizing fact that they need to diversify their portfolio.
Wouldn't have had the Mario movie, Nintendo world and obviously the Switch.
Thank you Wii U for your struggles lead to the golden age for Nintendo

They would have made the Mario movie they waited to make it why would they with record loses it'd take too long to make and be too risky. They had planned the Mario movie/theme park years ago till the right time like any smart business waiting for the best opportunity.
I agree the lot of Mario was way too much but I mean they had a fair limited variety, even crossovers. People ignore the Indies or PS Minis style stuff on there Nintendo fans care for Nintendo and like N64 who bothered with third parties certain audiences but the average person yeah no it was Nintendo and Rare always in their library or all they had.
Golden Age? I mean sure Switch is successful but best console I don't see. It such it has the games but not in the same appealing way as retro titles because that unique design isn't there it's still modern games and their hit and miss design of good to bland/samey.
Depends what you play/what IPs of course. Also a single screen handheld with separating controllers, an ok account system that makes the Vita account system shows it's solo issues (meaning the Switch does a fair job not perfect but better).
It's just ok not that exciting to me. It's like the PSP/Nomad wow it has a cable/dock. Why should I care. To me its just half what I care for and the other half the Wii U half isn't there. Most of the stuff it did is gone. Or the Wii U potential wasn't expanded upon it was dropped. Single screen is a back step from dual screen.
The Wii U didn't lead to the Switch the Wii to DS (if no dual screen and the buttons were there) well GBA, Wii and GBA to Switch was possible. The Switch is not a successor it's a step down but most people don't get that.
I can cast my phone to the TV without a dock, sure it's laggy and noticeable still possible.
Chromecast/Fire TV and more exist of streaming and that's well understood because it's TV and simple.
I mean marketing matters to casual idiots and generic games they don't care about the console just whatever boring games are on it. I couldn't care less what Ubisoft is making these days (RIP Red Steel 2 no VR/Rayman) let alone the other big western third party publishers anymore but most people do.
I don't miss them from Vita, 3DS or Wii U. They can have their casual Just Dance and family friendly IPs on their side that most idiots ignore because oh we only listen to the mature IPs as a sign of the only support of third parties. But I wasn't missing out honestly there was plenty on those consoles of first party and Indies. Didn't care Sony dropped off Vita I get why but I didn't need constant support from them like most people complain about I use what is available and still end up with a good console in its features and different experiences of games due to how limited it is. I think broader than close minded on how 'linited the library is and oh not my favourite IPs there must be nothing for it's. Yes sure look further people.
But I have because genres and IPs got to directions I wasn't into so TO LOOKING ELSEWHERE it was.
I didn't need constant releases of those IPs even PSP had what 1-2-3 Medal of Horrors, 1 COD then the many on DS. Or otherwise IPs of I assume all major sports? I know I saw enough bike games and other annual on it. Oh no Vita only has 1 wow.
Like sure sports or racing you didn't see it as much after 1-3 depending. Like 1 Madden, 3 FIFA, 3 WRC, 1 F1, 3 MotoGP and such but still.
But it varies from what people want.
GameCube had diversity so did it matter. The console was more colourful and people judge on stupidity even though I think it looks awesome and a small console to carry around how smart sure the game library is smaller because of the disks storage sizes but I mean enough variety was there still from major third parties just not certain ones. It had its own. Just because no Half Life doesn't mean Geist wasn't great in its own way. Oh it had COD/Medal of Gone and others nope people ignore that and bring up others and barely do their research on what's on a console.
People don't care about dual screens, hence SmartGlass and remote play with Vita only a small group of us care or even know they exist.

Another useful thing about the Wii U is it could run multiple things at once. E.g., you could browse the web while playing a game - something rather useful when looking up a guide or such. (Which I used for Fire Emblem's hidden endings.)
It also had better touch features, like the weird blowing onto the control to trigger flight and such on Mario.

The super Nintendo disc system was cancelled because Nintendo caught on that Sony was planning on entering the console market and that they were working with Nintendo to get experience in console manufacturing before they did it on their own.

03:22 Self-Sabotage, sure. But it would’ve been even more so had they completely gone through the deal. Basically, Sony would’ve Profited from everything Nintendo Released on the SNES Disk Drive and PlayStation, and Nintendo would get nothing; it was kinda too late for Nintendo to renegotiate a new deal. In that sense, I think Nintendo made the right call.

One of the biggest issues with the Wii U at launch is that it had no major exclusives for over year when it launched. Sure, Nintendo beat the competition with its release date, but who cares if all you get out of that is the ability to play New Super Mario Bros. U?
If the Wii U got games like Mario Kart 8, Super Mario 3D World, and Splatoon in the first 12 months then I bet that alone could have boosted the Wii U's overall sales numbers by as much as 5 million units.
The lack of power was also baffling. The Wii U was still using the GameCube CPU which was over a decade old when that released. The Wii U was only slightly more powerful than its last gen competition which was a stupid choice on Nintendo's part.
Honestly I could list more issues with the console than smart choices. But even with all of that in mind I am still a fan of the Wii U and its games.

A dual screen console with tons crammed into it, take a power bank it portable no wifi needed like SmartGlass (phone and console aka Wii U off tv play but without the game play in some areas) on Xbox One that's dead now or remote play on Xbox One or PS3-4/Vita.that also had second screen for the OS navigation on your Vita/phone. Or Playlink what phone support Everybody 1-2 Switch has now for minigames then Sony's whole party game range. The SingStar/RyeToy stuff no one talks about and thinks only PSVR was the thing the PS4 had it wasn't.
The Switch is a single screen device without the dual screen, which most people don't care for or ignorr was a factor of the Wii U and a PSP/Sega Nomad, Neo Geo X or Pocket PC the Switch is old idea, but modern. Besides the Joycons separation of course and HD Rumble.

"If the games are great, people will buy the console"
I actually agree with that - the Wii U's games weren't great IMO, and that's a huge part of why it flopped. So many games were the lowest points of their series, Mario Kart 8 is a great example, the Wii U version is very mediocre. Switch version's two item slots alone brought it way more in line with the other Mario Karts, then you add in Battle Mode and you go from one of the worst Mario Karts to an okay Mario Kart (then add in 48 more tracks and it gets pretty good).
And I'm not sure if I can agree that the Wii U was an underrated Zelda machine - VC releases had some serious issues with input latency which made games way less fun to play, and I really don't like either HD port and think both are steps back from their originals visually, which was especially noticeable because Ocarina of Time 3D set the bar so high for remakes IMO.
I got a Wii U week 1, and I felt the console was constantly disappointing. Switch improved on pretty much everything.

For all the faults the Wii U has, a lot of people generally forget things that started with the Wii U - the introduction of a standard Pro Controller that would be 1:1 with the main control scheme, the start of new and spinoff Nintendo franchises like Splatoon and Captain Toad, and I feel the most important bit is Nintendo's increased friendliness and partnership with independent developers.

    • @suntannedduck2388
      @suntannedduck2388 9 месяцев назад +2

Well the Wii Classic/Pro started it technically. But yes the ZR finally exists or ZL I should say probably as yes Wii was GameCube design yes. Wii U Pro people notice more. This coming from someone that doesn't even own a Wii Classic/Pro only GameCube/Wii U and Switch Pro controllers.
The new IPs were good. Captain Toad I guess if we don't count Mario controllable as it's still Mario universe DK, Toad, Yoshi, etc. But yes not Mario spin off I guess? At least not in the usual sense of Kart, Party, etc.
I mean is Yoshi's Island aka Super Mario World 2 a Mario game or a Yoshi game? (regardless of Baby Mario and yes Yoshi is the focal character/mechanics are different). Is it a Mario spin off or complexly starting new series. I think of them as separate but I do also wonder. Same with Wario Land's start as well.
The Dev support changes were good yes.

I preferred the WiiU over the Switch for a long time. Mostly because in its 4 year life span it had way more first party content to show compared to the Switch's first 4 years. Didn't help that a lot of the "new" games were just updated WiiU games with higher prices, which obviously didn't convince me. Plus being able to play Wii and Virtual Console games just made it a given choice for me. Also think the console had miles more personality than the Switch. (it still does by a long shot)
Only after time I started preferring the Switch simply for its convenience, third party support and well... being a newer system with a future unlike the WiiU, were all its selling points were obviously fading away.. Especially the eShop passing, which buried it for good.
Still, I'll always cherish the WiiU for what it was. (And is, as I still use it)

You can tell the devs/fanboys are just trying to find any excuse to hate the GameCube. Even though the GameCube did use smaller optical disc, the disc itself is about 1.46gb in size. A bit more than the Dreamcast 1gb of disc space so how come people complain about 1.46gb and not 1gb?

    • @tuonela7114

Because the Dreamcast died off pretty quickly and never really competed with the PS2, Xbox or GameCube directly
So when the GameCube had 1.46gb compared to the 4.7gb of both competitors it really did fall short on capacity
