Gotta love a book that tackles the profound moral complexity of life, but doesn't forget to embrace the joys of having a good ol poo off the side of a boat with your buds.
The upcoming chapter 23 is actually one of the best chapters in the whole series. Everybody drools over chapter 7 because of Y'Ghatan, but for me, that fateful night in Malaz City takes the cake!
I’ve got two: 1. “‘Stop them, sir? How do I do that?’ ‘I suggest corks. Now move!’ Pores scrambled. Oh please, please be finished before I arrive. Please…” 2. “The twins, breathing hard in perfect unison, hurried over and crouched down to study the cast. And then, had there been anyone present to see them, they would have witnessed on their perfect faces bemused expressions. Frowns deepening, confusion reigning in immortal eyes, and, before this night was done, pure terror. The non-existent witness would then shake his or her head. Never, dear gods. Never mess with mortals.”
Lovely! Thanks for this treat before Friday (here in the UK) - it has to be one book per year for me. Remembering the little details for me, makes a good read so special. Thanks Jeff and Lana!
Mebra is a 7C native who gave Kalam the book. Mallick Rel is the imperial advisor who engineered Pormquals surrender to Korbolo Dom at the end of Deadhouse Gates Edit: Also Hellian is one of the greatest fictional characters ever written, and I’ll fight anyone who says otherwise 😂
Your questions about Mallick&Korbolo's influence/macinations behind the scenes after being sent as prisoners to Laseen in House of Chains & also Pearl's thoughts and doubts regarding the Claw are answered in the Novel Return of the Crimson Guard. Also you ain't seen nothing from Hellien yet! next book she's killer
Next time ye see Mathok it'll blow your mind! I'd love a novella about the Malazan Armies exploits in Shal Morzinn against the 3 wizards! as apparently they got ran out of it and Kellenved was scared!! there's a small short story called Goats of Glory about a Malazan Army -The Rams and the few survivors of it coming out of the Demon Plain.
Some things that seem random in this book are just a bit clearer if you’ve read Night of Knives. It’s set in Malaz City, the sea, and Y’Ghatan, for instance. Several characters and concepts return here. But it’s not a must to have read it first. I bet it was fun for Erikson to riff on his partner’s new stuff in an “exquisite corpse” sort of way.
I think ONE book a year is too little for it to be worth it. Like, if you were doing Malazan at that pace, it'd only take you... almost 30 years to read every entry currently released in the series? Including all of Erikson's and Esslemont's series, of course. Like, that's way too much time. If it were, idk, 10 books a year, then it'd be a more competitive choice imo OOH, I love the deck readings. It really is hard to parse, and I don't remember anything of that one, but I remember loving it. That scene with Hellian and Banaschar is so good. She's one of the funniest characters, but strangely competent for a complete drunk, I guess. Oh my god, Fiddler's scenes there in the end of this book are great. I mean, everything is great in the end of this book, but I love Fiddler's things in particular. The deck reading, the reunion with the shop keeper. So good. Can't wait for next week!
The ending of this book has far reaching consequences that don't get resolved in this series. There honestly needs to be an in depth series focusing on everything that happens because of the fallout of the ending. While Esslemont covers a lot of it, he wasn't the strongest writer back then. He has a much better grasp on the series now, but some of his earlier work isn't the best.
you don't need to remember a book or movie or story for it to change who you are... that happens in the moment. but how can you not remember good stories... it is so strange to find out other brains don't work like mine do and Ganoes does not sanctify salvation like he did with the outsider hose of chains - he simply realised that it exsisted and to make accurate readings he needed the new card in the deck
Thanks for another great episode T'Jeff and T'Lana!

Pinching loaves
This is maybe my favorite comment yet.
Helian's speech on "explanations" vs "answers" is the standout quote for this book

Jeff Cannata aka Flappyjack leader of the Baconburners
Probably my favorite Malazan content right now. Please don’t stop! Loving it!

30:42 Traveler is the guy mentioned in the prologue of Gardens of the Moon, after the 9th paragraph. Starts with a "D"
Mebra is a 7C native who gave Kalam the book. Mallick Rel is the imperial advisor who engineered Pormquals surrender to Korbolo Dom at the end of Deadhouse Gates

Yeah when they said Mallick Rel gave Kalam the book I was like mmmmmm no… that was a different M name… 😂 thanks for clarifying for them!
Yesssss I was going to say this but I wasn't confident. I was like... Isn't mebra dead???"
@@Latienie_ lol yeah that too
Great stuff again

It is. All of us do that 🙂

1:20:23 you may very well also reach 90% of the entire MBOTF, and still have no idea how things will end 😆
In an early book club episode you both discussed finding out what the apostrophized names suggest. Gives a sort of hint to T'amber.

The scarred arms for Bottle’s doll references Foreigner. Although you still haven’t figured out who Foreigner is and this doesn’t help 😂

Helian is so freaking funny.
Hellian actually fails upward. Her's was one of the few squads to survive Y'gatan intact
All I can think of for how Lana peonounces Ganoes is the Muppet Show skit 'And now the g-news with Gary G-nu'.
GANOES LIKE CANOES I CAN'T HELP MYSELF
Ganoes almost met "Felisin" the Younger. So close!
WE POOP HARD
Jeff nailed it I would read the same 100 books every year and it'll be like the first time everytime
T'iffani T'Amber T'hiessen. Sorry, just had to get that out of my system 😅
