Jane said she LOVED playing the villain to sweet Shirley Temple. On the set they were good friends. There's nothing like a good villain and Jane was a great one!
She stated herself she was never allowed to even speak to Shirley. In interviews Jane said she would see Shirley on the lot and beg her mom to go talk to her, and her mom said no they’d get into a lot of trouble. Outside of filming scenes they never spoke, just curious how they could have been “good friends”?
Fun fact....The film "This Is The Life" was originally was supposed to be a film for Shirley in 1934 titled either " Meal Ticket" or "Little Mother" which was also supposed to star the one and only Spencer Tracy. However, when the Breen Code came into full effect later in 1934, it was decided that Shirley would make no more films regarding crime.
There were lots of kids in the '30's who really didn't like the cutesy image of goody two shoes Shirley Temple and Jane was the antithesis being a rambunctious, outspoken moppet. Kids identified with her where they didn't with Shirley. Adults loved Shirley. Jane was relegated to the B lot, Shirley to the A lot.
It is "This Is the Life". It is a cute movie; a little disjointed IMO - Paddy O Day and Ginger are much better! Sorry I can't upload the whole thing, but it is easily found cheap on websites for sale, if you search Google.
She was so entertaining. She could do everything, dancing acting, impersonations, comedy, and drama! What a talent! ❤😂😢😊
Terribly underrated actress. She's wonderful!
Jane was very talented. I would have loved to see another film with her and Shirley were they at least got along.
That couldn't happen because they were not even allowed to say hello.
She was a smart and gifted little actress, and I would wish, there were more of here movies here on youtube. Thanks for posting this.

"Ain't ain't ain't!" lol
My mother named me after Jane Withers. I am now 80.

She was going through young girl she feels like
She was at one point one of the most commercially successful actresses in Hollywood - although she is virtually forgotten now
Withers, most certainly, is never "forgotten."

Nice montage, I enjoyed it. Thanks!

10:11 what movie
Whats the movie where she's crying in the street and dressed like a boy?
I just vant to be alone
She did the funniest Greta Garbo!
I don' wanna!!
Wow she batter then sh
Withers was simply permitted to do different roles. Not "better" - equal.
Far more character and versatility than Shirley who is really sort of bland.
Both were cast for "type." Both brilliant.
