If i have learned anything i can share from building tiny computer cases is that: If you have just one fan, you should set it to blow to the outside as that will not only transport away the heat better but also create a pressure differential allowing air from the outside to enter through cracks in the walls etc.

i know this video is 3+ years old, but the reason you have algae is because the light allows it to photosynthesise. If you add a lit to the buckets (with a hole for the plants of course), and use black paint on your bucket to reduce the light, it will reduce all life from growing. The algae is non dangerous, but you might get Blight spores or other fungus spores that could harm your whole water system and infect your plants roots.

That worked for me...I concur, for anyone seeing this here now, another 3 years having passed. Paint the buckets black. My tomatoes are much happier now and grow faster. You can buy bucket lids with the baskets now too. Easiest tomatoes I have ever grown.

I dig the set up. I'm looking into buying a house in orange county and was looking for something like this because all the yards are small out here. I grew up in Ohio and it was common to have a garden that was like 30 yards by 50 yards. This looks like a nice setup for our urban living.

Nice dutch bucket build. If you install a small intake vent on the opposite side of exhaust fan, you will get better cooling. Make sure its screened to keep bugs out. A couple circulation fans will help too. Very nice for your first time! Your tomato leaves could be drying out due to growing determinate varieties and they are reaching maturity.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the Dutch bucket system. I appreciate the generosity of detail in your review. It’s a common peeve among horticulturalists ... please respect your tools. Specifically, I mean that plants grow in soil or “medium “, not “dirt”. Dirt is what you find under your fingernails after gardening or what We find on our laundry before we wash it.

When a leaf turns brown and shrivels up, it sends our a chemical signal. This alerts all the other plants to a danger and they start to shut down (less fruit and growth) to conserve their strength. Hence, pick off any brown leaf as soon as you see it. Great video, thanks for sharing.

Trim off the 3 lower stems. They are just using energy. The more air circulation you can get at the soil surface won't algae so bad. And congratulations! This is exactly what I plan to do!!!

Thanks, yes, you DEFINITELY need to reinforce it. The way I've done it structurally is perfect. There's no issue with the frame anymore during storms. But the panels still have issue. Some of the roof panels that see majority of the sun get brittle, and regardless of screws, the snapped and flew off. This was during a crazy wind storm, but nothing you can do. Just ordered a replacement from HF, it was $13.99.

Great video few tips that can help. Turn your fan around and use it as an exhaust. Heat rises and it will help tremendously. Also you can cover the top of your bucket so the light don’t hit and cause green algae also don’t let light hit the inside of your reservoir it will turn your water green. I noticed light coming in around your return line. Great job on your first go. Thanks for the video

Cropking out of Ohio has the bato buckets cheap (about $6.50 each with the elbows), the covers to block the light are 45 cents each, (I just ordered 50). I haven't received them yet but they have precut holes for plants and the drip line. I was going to buy a sheet of styrofoam and cut it to fit, drill holes and all of that, but for 45 cents I figured the time saved was worth it to just buy. I've been experimenting for a few years with different systems and the dutch bucket system is what I'm using now. I too am a MHP fan. Most of the things you need, you have to improvise or design yourself because the hydro stores are very expensive for growing vegetables.

Love the setup man. Keep posting updates. I live in the area (HB) and have a hydro setup in my back yard but not in a green house. It got destroyed this summer by moths/butterflies and caterpillars. They love my greens I guess. I'm thinking the greenhouse is the way to go to keep the pests away or at least to help control them a little better. I showed my wife your setup and she's all game. Now its time to save up some money and get a green house setup with the dutch bucket system. I'm just growing in a 3" pipe in a zig-zag pattern with net pots and a recirculating pump on a timer. Works good till the roots fill the pipe. That's why I'm thing dutch bucket setup would be better. More room for the roots to grow. Keep the videos coming.

    • @BrandonMatthewHB

Good to see some local guys working the hydro. Definitely the greenhouse has saved my ass with bugs and weather. You obviously know how hot of a season we've had, and I had some issues with aphids, but not nearly as bad as when everything was in dirt. Ladybugs wipe them out pretty quick when I drop 2,000 in there. Takes them quite some time to figure out how to escape. Now that it's a bit colder, I started my Kratky setups with romaine lettuce. Inside the greenhouse, not a bug touches them. I've got 18 head growing in a $6 setup from HD, and they grow like crazy. We'll be eating salads for the next month! Hope you have some success trying the dutch buckets, definitely the way to go. Let me know if you need any tips or help.

Great video. You should put the water flow just under the perlite. Just out of the sun. I keep just an 1/8 inch of perlite above because the algae affects the ph. Short term you may not have issues but it will cause you issues long term. All you have to do is keep the moisture out of the sun. That's what causes the algae.

Your getting algae because the top of your perlite is exposed to light. If you take the bucket tops and cut a hole in the middle and slice it across the top allowing you to bend it for your stalks to slide through to the center hole you will eliminate your algae and minimize water evaporation as well. Nice setup though!

I suspect the reason your plants perform better with irrigation applied at the top of your growth medium instead of feeding solution to the bottom of the bucket is that plants Absorb nutrients through feeder roots in the top 6 inches of soil and use lower roots for water uptake and anchoring.

The shiny side will help reflect sun light on to plants thus more grow, not wasting sun light. Your up grade on the feed line on your next video was very helpful, in fact I'm doing the same set up. I've been eyeing the Harbor Freight greenhouses but I wondered about their strength. In the summer we get squalls that occasionally gust over 40mph. It is good to learn they can be easily reinforced. I considered building a wooden railing around it also.

I would reinforce it as much as possible. The structure is flimsy, but the panels get brittle and break in the wind. That being said after all of my upgrades, I love the unit.
