  • The New York City Center Encores! production of Irving Berlin's Call Me Madam begins its brief run tonight, offering performances through February 10 only. Starring Tony nominee Carmen Cusack as Ambassador Sally Adams, the musical pokes fun at a far more polite and benign political world and includes standards such as "It's a Lovely Day Today" and "Something to Dance About," along with Berlin's most famous counterpoint duet, "You're Just in Love." Take a look at highlights from the production, which also features performances from Broadway regulars Lauren Worsham, Jason Gotay, and more.

How about a Broadway revival? In fact, how about reviving TWO Irving Berlin musicals at the same time? With the right type of promotion and clever publicity, CALL ME MADAM and ANNIE GET YOUR GUN could open back-to-back: MADAM at the Shubert, and ANNIE at the Booth. And they should forget the politically correct bullshit, and INCLUDE "I'm an Indian, too" in ANNIE GET YOUR GUN.

      It’s a good job you aren’t a producer

Best to leave this show in the bottom drawer now I think. It was dated when it first came out. Some great songs - but now that's not enough.

I think that’s what’s great about doing shows like these at Encores. I agree that the score is good, but the book is dated. Hence a semi-staged, short run of performances like this allows the music to shine and allows an audience to hear it live.
The fully-staged show itself would probably not survive a long run (unless it was done like Hello, Dolly! with Bette Midler - ie, with a huge star), so an Encores presentation seems ideal. It’s a pity we don’t have a similar style of event for classic musicals here in London.

@@scswp6945 score is great, but actors are without the charm and charisma of the original film cast. 🙄

The budget was 10 Dollars and they couldn't get a better voice for the role of Sally Adams
