I've done some testing and one handed attacks while a shield is equipped are about 10% faster than normal but you lose the strong attacks and do around 15% less damage with light attacks, but the animation has wider swings and more stagger. The combo meter also fills very quickly with shield based movesets. I've found for groups it was easy to crowd control with bash, build combo meter, put shield away and use the large damage boosted strong attacks to deal massive damage
+Veritas Calivmeir great research! Very useful to know that. I noticed that the attack seemed faster with the shield, but I wasn't sure so I couldn't claim that. But yea, bash then switch is a great tactical and very effective.
Click4Gameplay Today I plan on testing the exact number of frames a roll takes in the animation, how many of those frames are i-frames, and how many of them are startup/end frames with no immunity. Will repeat with backsteps
Great tutorial. It does take time to learn and perfect these skills, but it is worth it and often the only way to beat many of the mobs that you will have to fight in order to complete a lot of the quests that you will be given in the game.
Finaly i Saw a master swordsman gameplay! Thank you alot! This information should tell Combat Master (NPC) to player when he starts to learn mele skills) I remebered gothic 1 where mele teacher told alot about how to hendel your sword in you hends) and how i needed in speach like yours about tactic - how to fight)
Loving these ELEX videos, wonder if you have any plans on re-visiting or doing any new videos? I say "revisiting" because I know since launch there have been a few patches and I'm not sure if everything still applies or maybe there';s some fresh tips, either way thanks again. I am on my 1st PT of ELEX, loving it so far! Combat is getting better, and a little easier for me (playing on 'Difficult' setting) factionless with around 100 hours already, I know I'm a slowpoke who loves these kinds of massive OW RPGs. Def. gonna get hundreds of hours out of ELEX, and...then we have ELEX 2 to look forward to, although I have not completed the game, I still cannot wait to play the sequel. I can only hope that PB take fan feedback and make some nice improvements to flesh out the combat, skills and control/movement (it's still a bit tank-ish imo)
Fallout Wanderer 2077 If you enjoy Elex i recommend playing Mars: War log and Technomancer. Their new game will be Greedfall. Spiders are in the same vain as PB.
I also have to ask, what difficulty was this on, easy or normal or did you have 2nd/3rd tier of 'Melee'? Has to be one or the other because they're dropping like flies in this vid. compared to my game where they have a lot more HP and you're using a Broadsword +1 which I believe is only 39 dmg.
Excellent videos! BTW, at 03:26, was that the melee attack or the other Alb with the ranged energy attack that caused dmg? I ask because I'm curious if there's friendly fire in ELEX. I know you can hurt allies, hoping the same applies to the enemy. Always good fun, kiting enemies into the trajectory of incoming ranged attacks. Had some pretty cool and humorous situations like that playing Witcher 3 with archers taking out their own guys lol.
1:30 OMFG yes, this is by far the most annoying thing I've found in this game. Be like 10 miles from your target swinging and they CLEARLY miss but you get swatted in the back of the head anyway @.@ Fighting multiple targets being that I sided with the Berserkers usually involves 1 of 2 things which is hovering a good distance off the ground backwards while spamming spells as most enemies will opt to still try and swing at you despite being just high enough off the ground for them to miss while also not getting caught in your own AOE's. or kiting the ever loving crap out of everything and getting enough distance to get the overhead heavy were your guy lunges like 100 feet forward when he attacks. I wish you could control which heavy you do as I much prefer the overhead due to the insane range it has, its only downside is you'll likely only hit 1 thing with it, MAYBE 2 if there right next to each other, like touching distance or standing directly behind one another. I know I'm not confident in my ability to parry at all so I tend to kite and dodge more than anything else when fighting which has worked well enough for me. Getting into multiple enemy fights becomes pretty unavoidable late game as firing off a spell or any weapon will generally cause all enemies in the area to aggro, early on its easy enough to pull a Dark Souls/The Surge and kite one enemy at a time by getting just close enough to piss them off, but not close enough to piss off there buddies to minimize getting your ass handed to you. @Click4Gameplay If you read this, consider doing a video based on damage types. When playing as a Berserker and being able to apply Poison, Fire, or Ice to weapons some effects are significantly more powerful against certain enemies. Talking some weapons with Fire that would take 5+ swings to kill a target, with poison will kill that same enemy in 2-3 hits. (These examples are from my lvl 48 toon with 85 Strength and maxed melee damage perks) Mutants in particular seem to get eaten alive pretty quickly when using Poison, were as most beasts will take more damage from Fire, while some are incredibly resilient to poison. Not too sure on Ice as I only ran around with an Ice enchanted sword for a bit to really know what creatures you can eat up with that damage type. I assume Shock probably melts machines as well as slowing your targets movement speed temporarily, and bleed is probably just universal free damage against anything organic(never had any weapons with bleed effects), not being any weaker or stronger than any other status effect. Can tell just from fighting many enemies that Radiation damage is incredibly weak, all it does is prevent health regeneration from what I can tell.
This character has just hit the cultivator rank with the Berserkers, and I use magic only to drop the mana bar down, and after that I don't bother using it, because I'm investing most of the skills for a bow oriented playstyle, if I invested more points in strength and got a better melee weapon I would kill those guys easier for sure. There's a time you just don't have a different choice then to kite them, like when you get the annoying stamina debuff, can't even dodge. But in a strange way I like that those albs can apply that debuff. Yea it's pretty hard to hit multiple targets with the strong attack, only in certain situations when they are really close to each other, but when you land it, it feels good :D Parry is probably my favorite thing in melee to be honest, so I tend to use it a lot, it's a high risk, and sometimes not that much high reward actually, but combining it with dodging can be really effective sometimes as I tried to show a bit in the video. I'm planing to do something like that for a future video, but I have to level up more, since the Jax in the video is only lvl 12. But yea damage types could be really informative and helpful video for beginners. Poison seems really strong, and sometimes op actually. Also the thing that's not that tallked about, for example the differences between normal, and difficult, the combo bar is filling really slower on difficult then normal, auto locking etc, etc. I play on difficult on this character, but I lowered it to normal actually here, because I could probably do the exact same thing on difficult, but the video would be twice as long and a bit boring actually. Tnx for the great and informative comment btw dude.
Damn, how do you play like that, I always panic, button mashing, save if I can hurt the enemies, dead, reload, rinse and repeat until all enemies dead, it's kinda savescumming. It's frustrating playing like that, but the game doesn't really have combat tutorial to play it properly. They hurt their own game by not teaching ppl to play properly because I know the combat system isn't conventional, it doesn't mean it's bad, it's kinda like what cdpr did with the witcher 3, you'll like it once you get the hang of it, but in elex it is just hard to master, and review sites gave elex low scores because of that.
+Smurfinz Believe me, I was kinda like that at the beginning too. But since I'm a long time fan if PB game I knew how to get a hang of it. I totally agree with you that the game does a poor job of explaining the player it's combat mechanics. I actually think this was intentional, since this game has a strong Gothic 2 feel. But the devs failed to realize that a lot of players will not have the patience to figure it out for themselves. Some of the reviews are ridiculous, but that isn't a surprise, since the majority of those reviewers are expecting that the game handholds them, so they could just freely rush the main quest. Not all of the reviewers are bad ofc, and different opinions are ok, but stating something like ''elex combat is broken souls'', is just plain stupid. I'll upload a video later that might help people to better understand the defense skill play / mechanics, and the importance of it. Hope to see you there. Sorry for the mini rant, lol.
NP, I also rant a lot. Looking forward to your next vid. I can imagine how you did it in this video, but I still can't do it myself lol. Btw is that doable to multiple non human enemies/monsters as well ? The game is awesome even though most of the time I beat the enemies by abusing the system , be it luring the multiple enemies to separate them and kill one by one on the way or by using walls or higher terrain for platform and let the companion do ranged attack until the enemy/enemies die. If I can play like you do in this vid, damn it would be more fun. I'll just lower the difficulty for now.
You can play it however you feel it's right. Yes, you can evade, and dodge non human npcs, you can check out Advanced Archery if you didn't already. I use evade a lot with the bow in that video. And that's my playstyle actually atm, because my Jax is a ranged berserker.
first time playing PB game here. but am a Souls veteran. I got the hang of the combat after playing a bit . you're not suppose to get hit. I play it like Souls game. evade and roll to the side. and it works. you're not suppose to trade damage with enemy. you're doing it right when you kill a enemy without taking any damage at all. the armor are really just backup, in case you mess up and get hit. they're not meat to "defend" you.

There's a neat trick for normal attacks which don't track good. You can block quickly before attacking to realign with the target.

thank you I was about to give up on this game...I will watch your whole library WELL DONE SIR!
+jason benjamin Feel free to ask anything about the game :)

This was my first playthrough, and I played on Difficult, but later on in the game, when it became kinda easy, I switched to ultra.
You can upgrade legendary weapons. The weapon I used here is Ignis Artifex. It has a strong fire dot.
Excellent videos! BTW, at 03:26, was that the melee attack or the other Alb with the ranged energy attack that caused dmg? I ask because I'm curious if there's friendly fire in ELEX. Wonderful videos, thanks!
That means a lot bro. Love your videos!
Roll, hit once, roll. Repeat untill everything is dead. Bonus points for using weapon with DOT.
Great video and parry skills!
Iron bar III is the best. Good heavy attack and good fast R1s.
Are you from Romania?

Yeah you can. You can individually lock on to enemies and toggle between enemies while locked on.

Smurfinz To be fair these so called Game journalist don't do they're jobs properly. I'm just glad it got a sequel coming in the works.
Gonna do meele build once game is more balanced, right now its just aoe knockdown pulse rifle/ crossbow with explosive bolts😀😀
Oh that sounds juicy. :D
So nobody uses grenade launchers. Widowmaker being the most OP one with its 3 round burst. I mean every video I watch it's zerkers and clerics, lol
Братишка от твоего акцента, кровь чуть из ушей не пошла))
i am honestly done at the reaver/talvar questline where "hopkins" and his cannibal friends are literally fucking hitler piece of shit game design.
Another shit slasher... where are games with smart combat that was in Gothic 1-2
