So happy for Daniel, been following him since I was in high-school. A player that consistently shows up and works. He's also been on tennis podcasts and shared a lot of interesting information on what it's like being a pro player. Well deserved.
Novak was ranked 13 at Indian Wells 2018 due to skipping the 2nd half of 2017. Daniels win over Ruud is his biggest win by ranking (Ruud is ranked 4). Novak wasnt himself at IW 2018 for reasons everyone knows but as we all know even beating a sub par Djokovic is still a huge challenge.
I have seen Daniel chipping away and knocking at the door in tournaments. If he keeps on playing phenomenally like this, he will get his shine and opportunities.
Great effort and flow Taro! Really looks like he was in the best rhythm and aggressive vibe in this match He has a lot of strengths which could become weapons Keep going Taro! 頑張れ!
Hey tennnis TV, you can make a collection of every tweener attempts of the year, no matters fail or success. It may be interesting because so far the year, many players have done some impressive tweeners.
Yeah well, he's trying to find his rythm, after months without much events, and Taro peaked, happens. Novak lost to Vesely last year I believe in a similar fashion, doesn't mean much.
Has there been a bigger overachiever on the ATP tour as Ruud in recent years? Was one match win away from being the world number one, with only a couple 250s to his name
It's not even that. He was able to take advantage of the craziness of many of the top players having their points-earning potential stifled due to ridiculous COVID rules, meaningless Russian bans, and injuries. He managed to go through last year and attain his ranking with only two (!!!) wins over top-10 players prior to the ATP finals, and you'll notice the names missing from his wins list: Djokovic, Nadal, Medvedev, Tsitsipas, Sinner, and Alcaraz. If last year had been "normal" he might have cracked the top 10, but his ranking is far beyond his actual capabilities.
@@HeavyTopspinWow, this is so denigrating toward Ruud's skill. Tennis is not boxing. His high ranking is the result of consistent playing throughout the year and he also managed to earn wins over many top players such as Berettini and Rublev. What happened was many other top players are inconsistent (even Djokovic had many losses during last year's clay season) and despite how good a player is, if you can't collect enough points then you don't deserve the high ranking.
When Daniel missed that sitter at 4-4 in the TB I thought he was finished. Kept his head though, won his service points and then got the error from Ruud on match point. What a win for Taro!
@@hello-mv6yg Barring some mind blowing shock like Istomin at AO 2017, that sounds just about right. Ruud has been struggling since his USO run, no good results apart from ATP finals runner up to Novak. Has time to regain his form, but needs to happen soon. I wouldnt be as sure about Medvedev as everyone is about Novak. Meddy's been better these last 2-3 weeks than he was through most of 2022 since blowing that 2 set lead in the AO final (that being said, what a fightback from Rafa). I'll believe Medvedev is back to his 2019-2021 self if/when he beats Novak next. His chance is tomorrow. I predict Novak in 2 though.
Instead of talking about how undeserving Ruud is to be in the Top 5, which is the case, I’d like to praise Taro for an exceptional game. Some of his passes were out of this world. A great game and super energy from him. Ruud and his path to winning more tournaments? Well, that’s for another day.
Undeserving? The guy reached 2 GS finals last year and won a bunch of tournaments. He worked his ass off to improve his game and got the results to match his efforts.
@@hello-mv6yg amongst others: Hurkacz, Rune, Cilic at RG and Paul, Berrettini, Khachanov at US Open. He also reached final of ATP Finals, Masters 1000 final and won 3 titles last year.
@@DvdStennis exactly, none of these guys were contenders in the first place. I respect Ruud and his game, but won't take him to the next level. He needs a more aggressive mindset like his idol. Hurkacz and Cilic aren't that good on clay compared to grass and hard courts.
Agreed. He has no weapons and he needs to drop his racket tension significantly to get more court penetration. Shots constantly sitting up mid court and all his opponents getting easy looks at winners. 23 will be a struggle for him unless he changes things up asap
This seems to be a continuation of the poor form Ruud had after the US Open last year (before he reached the ATP tour finals). He went from September to November 2022 only winning 4 matches. So far this year he's only won 3 matches.
Feel for Ruud!!! Should not be a sorrow-tale like that of Thiem's. Atleast we can say, Thiem's injury disrupted his confidence and form, but for Ruud, there's no reason why he's playing like this. It's pitiable.
I really like Ruud a lot, but for me, he is the pure example of downfall of tennis quality. 10 years ago, I am sure he wouldn't be able to enter top 10, and nowadays he was 1 win away from being no 1. Very nice guy, but he doesn't have any big weapon.
Am I the only one who always thought Ruud is overrated, yes he reached 2 slam finals last year, but the score of his loss to Rafa was like vs 1st round opponent.
Always thought Rudd rankings flattered him beyond belief, his game is on the outskirt of top 10 at best. I’ll be shocked if he reached another slam final let alone win 1
In fairness to him, he did reach two slam finals plus the ATP tour finals last year. That's a great achievement. He's one of those players who doesn't have any huge weapons and can be beaten by better players on the day. But he will never beat himself. As John McEnroe once said, fat more matches are lost with errors than are won with winners.
ruuds balls are too short all the time. especially in that third set - making it easy not only to get, but also to attack them for daniel. he needs to go 1m closer to the lines. that would make ALL the difference. hes making it too easy.
In my opinion, Ruud is the weakest player in the top 10 (Rafa and his injuries excluded.) He is a good player, but he is really only dominant on clay. It seems like him and Holger Rune are the two players in the top ten who loose sets/matches to guys they have NO business loosing too. Hopefully with more experience they both can tighten up there games

All due respect, Ruud is not a true top 3 player. More like 8-10 at best. Due for a drop off after a career year the likes of which he won’t repeat again.
I’m never stunned when I see these new young players lose. The nextgen are the most inconsistent era of tennis ever. I’m only stunned when the likes of Novak and Rafa lose.
Crazy athleticism and speed from Daniel tonight!

What a performance! I'm so happy for Daniel. Have a good rest and keep on going!
first time i see daniel, and i am so impressed by his complete game, incredible.
that is why taro is one of my fave ATP players...great job, wishing you for more victories..
3:13 it’s not the biggest win of his life. He beat Djokovic at Indian Wells in 2018
And he showed Murray the door at the Aus Open a couple of years back. Just throttled him.

Daniel has a fantastic backhand along the line 👌
The atmosphere was crazy good. One of the best events on tour.
Very slams event feel, felt like 2nd or 3rd round match
