I absolutely agree that the "Oh god, eSports focus? Ewwwww" stems from Street Fighter 5. Maybe you liked it, maybe you didn't, I certainly didn't, but I don't think ANYONE can argue the launch of that game in particular did hella damage towards the FGC's perception of what "eSports" actually is, and that's partly in thanks to the fact a lot of the English speaking FGC ONLY care about the American scenes and don't know dick about the Japanese side of FGC history. A lot of people have NO idea that Sega basically CREATED eSports with their official Virtua Fighter tournaments all the way back in I wanna say late 1994 with the release of VF2. There were likely a couple fighting game tournaments at the time for stuff like Super Turbo, but Sega were the first to go "alright, let's do these official tournaments, let's hook players up" with a new game release.
It's not even just a SFV thing. Every FPS, RTS, racing game and MOBA that annonunced that ended up launching with next to no content. The "we're making it for esports" mentality straight up killed Command & Conquer and the entire RTS genre (aside from Sracraft) for a decade, so any time I hear that phrase I immediately write it off.

Honestly, I get why people say it, but Virtua Fighter isn't completely devoid of story. It's light for most of them, but Kage's actually got a pretty clear motivation. I do also love that the games have canon winners and would love to know who won 5. Maybe it's gonna be Wolf's turn. (Probably not, granted.)
As well as Sarah's brainwashing and Jacky's repeated attempts at trying to rescue her. There's also the revenge Pai wants against Lau, her father, due to his negligence towards the family which caused her mother to die from overwork and stress. Also, don't Wolf and Akira have something of a rivalry? And as you noted with Kage, Dural being the final boss adds a layer of storytelling if your character is Kage, something not visually shown in detail at first, sure, but there's no denying that the connection is there. I've repeatedly heard Max say that VF is little to bereft of story and I just don't agree with that.
People are still playing VF5US online despite it lacking single player content. I'm excited for a new VF but I hope they stay true to the game's mechanics.
The costumes that ppl are complaining in MK1 are the green weird ass character repaints that are crearly using Titan Havik's color scheme in a season that was supposed to be Mileena's themed
I think with the monk, it makes sense because boxing is actually a fairly Catholic sport, or so they say Because a big part of it is sacrificing your body for someone else and getting up from a knock out is like a resurrection of Jesus.
I also don't see Arcsys going back to Bandai Namco because they outsourced the rollback not from Arcsys and they're refusing to work with them again it seems.

Theres actually a pretty robust story throughout the VF games, but its not pushed as the leading driver of the characters. (Like a Netherrealm game) J6 abducting fighters, creating Dural, who has ties to Kage, Jacky, Sarah, Jean, Goh…and the martial artists on “the path” facing off in the tournaments make up the rest of the cast. And yes, then theres Jeffry 😂

If a fighting game doesn't have robust, fun single player content, I ain't buying. I've been playing fighting games since the early 90's. I'm not main eventing EVO anytime soon. If SF6 didn't have World Tour mode, I don't think I'd have even picked the game up. No excuse not to have a solid single player mode.

So, i've been hearing of this new VF leak and so on. I'm more curious of how Dural will played out. She was a NPC in US and with some nerfed adjustment, she'll be playable again. Probably a upgraded design with less nude and more robotic something like a T-1000 thing. Maybe a mode where you can add moves from other fighters like Ace from Street Fighter EX3 or Baki in Grappler Baki the game or Fighting Fury in the EU it was called.
I really want Virtua Fighter 6 a great story of Akira Yuki, Pai Chan and Judgment Six. I also want Virtua Fighter live action movie for the 30th anniversary of Virtua Fighter with a better cast.
A good story mode will provide so much gas to make VF6 successful (and Roll back net code). Jugement six is such a fascinating organisation. There a lot to build in term of plot around it.
As someone who actually went about looking up the entire story of Virtua Fighter and watching a little series on it where a guy explains it all there totally is something there and it even has a little compelling narrative there but none of it is expressed IN the games and it SUUUCKS cause it's a neat aspect of VF and there's this little sci-fi thriller going on in the background with mind control and super solider programs.
Folks are upset with the seasonal palettes not the UMK3 although those look a little funny as well because they follow the original concept art designs

@@THENAMEISQUICKMAN While that initial comment is certainly bait, but I gotta admit, I actually do consider DoA to be similar, beyond just the button layout, a bit like a hyper VF. If you aren't familiar with this little tid bit that's ok (even FGC folk tend to not to know or overlook it), but DoA was built sharing the base engine VF used with Tecmo being the only other developer to work with Sega's M2 model. On release it had became its own thing through several modifications. It's part of the reason why multiple VF characters showed up in DoA5 and translated pretty well. It was a kind of celebration if I recall. Honestly there is some decent legacy there, I do wish both franchises see a return. Outside of this discussion, it's can be pretty disheartened when DoA gets relegated as that one "bouncy" game when I was enjoying the gameplay with Jann Lee, Bayman & Ryu Hayabusa along with the insane stage transitions and stuff like Tag mode included in most titles xD To quote Dead or Alive 5 producer Yosuke Hayashi has said, “Actually not a lot of people may know this but the first Dead or Alive game that came out in arcades was actually made with the Virtua Fighter arcade engine. So that’s how the first ever Dead or Alive project came about. We didn’t aim to be where Virtua Fighter was, but because we used its engine as our base, we obviously had some kind of connection with Sega." Just thought I'd share since it's one of those things rarely or almost never talked about. VF will always be game of all time with it's legacy though.

The dbfz rollback visual bug only happens when your spectating but it’s still wack they haven’t fixed it yet
VF5US was in development during the start of the pandemic and they had a hard deadline by Sony so Sega had to cut out a lot of features.
I'm surprised they didn't mention the Hunter x Hunter fighting game that's being made by Eighting and was confirmed as a 2D fighter.
The initial announcement was mentioned on an older podcast, and the newest trailer was released after this episode was recorded.

I will say this might be one of my favorite episodes of this podcast I’ve ever heard as it’s focused and enthusiastic thoroughout on every subject. Quality stuff

@@THENAMEISQUICKMAN While that initial comment is certainly bait, but I gotta admit, I actually do consider DoA to be similar, beyond just the button layout, a bit like a hyper VF.
If you aren't familiar with this little tid bit that's ok (even FGC folk tend to not to know or overlook it), but DoA was built sharing the base engine VF used with Tecmo being the only other developer to work with Sega's M2 model. On release it had became its own thing through several modifications. It's part of the reason why multiple VF characters showed up in DoA5 and translated pretty well. It was a kind of celebration if I recall.
Honestly there is some decent legacy there, I do wish both franchises see a return. Outside of this discussion, it's can be pretty disheartened when DoA gets relegated as that one "bouncy" game when I was enjoying the gameplay with Jann Lee, Bayman & Ryu Hayabusa along with the insane stage transitions and stuff like Tag mode included in most titles xD

Just thought I'd share since it's one of those things rarely or almost never talked about. VF will always be game of all time with it's legacy though.
