- We purchased this little craftsman style home in the fall of 2022, with intentions of doing a quick fix and flip. We started the demo work and soon realized that it was actually an old pioneer dovetail log cabin. Our quick fix and flip turned into a quest to renovate and restore this awesome old log cabin. This video is part one in a series documenting the process of me and my helper Bennie the French Bulldog restoring this cool log cabin.
I grew up with a few carpenters in my family. I know good work when I see it, and you are one of the best. These days you don’t see a lot of dedication to perfection but you certainly have the talent. Benny is adorable. Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much! I’ve definitely put my time in and learned a lot over the years, I’m thoroughly enjoying making videos and sharing my projects.
I bet that, if you would take a metal detector, you would find some nice old things! Like old kids' toys, old nails, and maybe some coins? Love that underneath that old shell, a stunning log cabin was hiding, what a find! 👍😎
I actually let a couple of friends go over it with metal detectors, they did find a few of the cool old hand forged nails, and some old bottle caps, if they found any coins they didn’t tell me about it 🤔. The cabin is a cool find, I’m pretty excited about turning into a nice home, thanks👍
This looks like a job for Superman! But i look forward to seeing how it turns out.
I’ve done several of these old ones, but this one’s definitely a mountain of work. I’m looking forward to the finished product, and it’s been fun sharing it!
Love you craftmanship, patience and easy going style! Keep up the good work!
Thank you very much! I’m thoroughly enjoying the process and excited to see how it turns out. Thanks for watching 👍
You should be very proud of the work you are doing. Awesome job 👍👍👍👍
Thank you very much!
I watched a lot of renovation videos and pretty soon into the video it's clear when someone knows what they're doing, and you definitely do. Everything you do is well thought out and executed incredibly well, it's a joy to watch.
Thanks! I’ve done lots of projects over the years, and have tried to learn how to do as many trades as I can. It’s been a good experience, and I’m having fun sharing it. I’m glad to hear you enjoy watching, and thank you 🙏
You're lucky to have Bennie. Tough to find a helper that shows up everyday! Great work. Really enjoyed the video.
I am lucky, he’s a great sidekick, glad you enjoyed the video, and thanks for watching!
Thank you for restoring that old log cabin. In my opinion there is nothing more beautiful than an old log cabin.
I agree, I’m pretty excited to see how it all comes together. Thanks for watching!
This is very cool, and I like your music choice! And Bennie is adorable!
Thank you 🙏
Yeah great work great music
Perfect creepy basement music❤
I thought so too, it’s a good fit.
We took down an old 2 story log cabin back in 1979 in Edneyville, NC.
We numbered and marked each log and reconstructed the cabin in Saluda.
It was fun but time and money got the better of us and it was never finished.
A fella from Dana bought it, marked the logs, and rebuild it complete. I went to see it and it was pretty as a speckled pup. - Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina 😊
What an awesome experience, they are definitely a mountain of work, time, and money. Even though you weren’t able to finish it, it sounds like you got great pleasure in seeing it finished. Thanks for sharing, and watching!
I love watching your videos. This is so interesting to me. Can’t wait to see the outcome of everything you’ve done.
Thank you so much!
Seeing dovetail joints on a much larger scale is a little mind-blowing.
It’s pretty impressive what the craftsman could do 100+ years ago with just a few hand tools.
@Madebymick I've seen it on countless furniture pieces but never on a HOUSE! 😊👋🐾🐾 Btw, Bennie looks like he is not doing much because he is a supervisor. 😁✌️🐕
You have an awesome co-pilot! :)
Thanks, he’s pretty good company 😁
Loved your video. And your ' overseer' is so damn cute! I look forward to your next one.. From Newcastle Tyne. UK 👍😊
Thanks! He has quite a personality, and makes work, and the videos more fun. Glad you liked the videos and thanks for watching!👍
I really enjoyed watching this process. 🙌🏻
Awesome! Thank you!
Bennie is such a cutie!
He’s lots of fun, he has quite a personality 😁
Some of those large rocks you had to use as part of the landscaping clustering them together that would be beautiful
Great idea! They are plentiful around here👍
It's really cool to see you do everything yourself. It must be so satisfying knowing all that change and hard work was done by you. The working alone without having an abundance of other trades working around you is awesome to see for me too. Very nice work. You're a hardworking fella 💪👍.
Cheers,Danny.
It’s very satisfying, and I’m glad I’ve learned how to do a lot of different things over the years. I’m definitely in my happy place! Thanks for the positive feedback and encouragement!
Those logs are pristine. You are showing great respect to a hidden gem.
Thanks! It’s crazy how they covered them up with siding and plaster, but that’s definitely what preserved them all these years.
my kitty was sitting on my lap until the basement music came on, then she split.
The kitty cat even thought that was a creepy basement 😂
Back breaking work right there!
It’s quite a project! Thanks for watching!
I'd say Benny is looking forward to this adventure. Loved watching him 'chase' the windshield wipers. Good video.
He has quite a personality, I sure enjoy taking him with me. He loves chasing those wipes 😂 Thanks for watching!
I do enjoy watching your videos. I’m one of those jack of all trades. You make it look so easy.
I appreciate that!
Oooooo, the claw!
Those stairs were no match for the claw😁
Great craftsmanship!
Thanks!
Not a quick fix. But the end result will be so worth it! Can't wait for part 2.
I definitely added to the workload, but I’m pretty excited to see the finished product. Thanks for watching!
I like number two picture on the house or Nessa that’s that that’s pretty awesome there big thumbs up man😊
Thanks!👍
Great Job Pete 👌!!!😇
Thanks! 😃
Awesome! I subscribed the minute you discovered the dovetail construction and decided to save it as historical rather than hide it under Tyvek and siding.
Awesome, thank you!
VERY NICE!!!
Thanks!!
Приємно дивитися на вашу роботу.Як казав мій чоловік:»дурню півроботи не показують»,до останньої хвилини не уявляла ,яку красу ви зробите!Це цукерка!!!
I can’t get a translation for some reason, wish I could. Thanks for watching!
Those are some huge logs on that cabin.
They definitely are, the bottom ones are the biggest and they get smaller as they go up.
Nice project on a nice old house !! A lot if work to coming, but when it is done it will be a great and amazing Home ! Greets from The Netherlands !
Thanks! It’s definitely a lot of work, but I’m pretty excited to see how it turns out! 👍
Bennie seemed so eager to go to work only to just stand around. 😅
Yeah, he likes to go with but his work ethic is questionable 😁
Supervision is a hard task?
I love your dawg.😅
He’s a funny dog, he has quite the personality!
Cosey to see you do sutch Nice work on This log house
Thanks! I’m really enjoying the journey 👍
I sure woulda run across that dirt basement floor with a metal detector before pouring the 'crete!
Probably would have been a good idea, I might have found some cool stuff.
I just had a lesson on how they use to just fill the hole with concrete, had 9 inches of concrete under my shower pan.
Yeah, you never know what you’re going to get into on these old houses.
😊
👋
I love your little log house you found a gold mind a treasure do you know what year your house was built or log cabin was built it is so quaint you’re doing a great job you’re lucky to have the knowledge to fix it up
It’s definitely a unique find, I’m not sure what year it was built, but I did find an old envelope behind the siding that was dated 1915, so I know it’s older than that. Thanks for watching!
Make sure to check inside those boots! People hide stuff in shoes and boots!
Great idea! I’ll check them out 👍
Logs you cut of WA all make coffee table
Great idea! I might have to do that 👍
👏👏👏
Thanks!
👍
👍
❤
👍
I would've gone with the light grey too, to match the shingles. Wood weathers oftentimes to a gray color so it will always look brand new unless you decide to give it a whole new and different look some day.
Yeah, I’m pleased with the results, and those are all good points. Thanks for the feedback 👍
Wow, didn't know concrete could be poured in cold weather.
I ran the heater for a few days, and kept it from freezing, and the ground was dry and had no frost in it.
❤it’s warmer down below ground
was that a sausage gun or just the largest caulk gun when filling gaps between timbers?
I started out with a large caulking gun, and switched to the sausage gun with a threaded plunger for the 5 gallon bucket, which made it so much easier. Thanks for watching!
Hi!
Why haven't you put a vapor barrier on the basement floor?
Hi, do you mean under the floor before we poured it? That’s not code in our area, is it in yours?
Not sure but is normal to do that here in Norway
what is pioneer dovetail cabin???
The pioneers, or early settlers of the American west hand built log cabins from local trees. The corners were hand cut to a dovetail pattern which tied together the logs, and held them together for hundreds of years.
@@Madebymick thanks for letting me know
Thanks for watching 👍
Not the canning shelves-OMG, no, never! Blasphemy
Yeah right, don’t tell grandma 😬
Why did you not leave the log exposed. China it.
It changed my words. Not china.
Not sure what you’re asking?
What if she meant Chink it. That's the fill between the logs I guess. I like dogs and restoration so RUclips presented your channel to me. All the channels they show me take off. I'll guide you if you want or not, but I'm nice with encouragement. Best to your channel. Your friend, Greg. 😎
My dog loves to chase wipers too ! 🐶
Yeah, its funny until you take them for a ride during a heavy downpour 😂
@@Madebymick BEEN THERE DONE THAT !
