I believe she adopted some boys who were about to leave the care system a couple of years ago. I do think a relationship to this extent with a child is concerning though. Personally, I find the Elastic Heart video to be a wonderful piece of performative art. Like it really was powerful. I agree about "Elastic Heart." I thought it was supposed to be representative of a daughter (mentally) wrestling with their feelings toward/relationship with, and eventual escape from, an abusive father.
I thought the silly faces Shia was pulling and "play" at the start of the video was specifically part of establishing that he was supposed to be Dad, and Maddie was depicting how hard it can be to disconnect from that relationship and the reactions children receive when they try. (Even the title -- "Elastic Heart" -- seemed an obvious fit, to me.) I remember finishing the video and feeling really impressed with the way everything was clearly choreographed to make sure that all of their partner work wasn't even unintentionally inappropriate (e.g. he lifts her up by the waist and spins her around at one point, and the shot is exclusively framed to show his head only ever level with her midsection _and_ that he is holding her several inches away). I had also interpreted there to be allusions to Dad being physically inappropriate (for example, when Dad is hanging at the top of the cage until Daughter 'falls asleep,' then he drops down and lies beside her, reaches out to tap her chin, and she 'wakes' and bolts away), but even _that_ was staged so that he hardly crouched at all when catching himself from the drop -- keeping him well above Maddie -- and laid facing her in a mirrored fetal position with at least a foot of distance between them. Needless to say, I was pretty surprised by the backlash, because it seemed so clear to me that they'd gone out of their way to be appropriate in the depiction, and specifically protective of Maddie in the choreography.
And yes, the worst part about Sia's relationship with Maddie is that Sia only needed to hire a proxy for _Chandelier_ in the first place because fame and spotlight had made her suicidal, so... she chose a _child_ to channel that onto?

The skin tight/revealing flesh colored costumes were what gave me the ick as it felt like they were aiming to imply nudity. I don't think that added to the video in an artistic sense and I'm sure whatever emotion it was supposed to invoke could have been represented in a more appropriate way that wouldn't tantalize/normalize for some twisted people so much skin to skin contact between a child and a grown man. If anything it distracted me from the choreography on the first watch because the whole time I was on edge wondering how far they would go with it

    • @jacksyoutubechannel4045

@@Steph-zo5zk It's definitely possible I'm biased from years of ballet (and other dance, but ballet primarily). Nude dancewear is often used when a piece is supposed to be more metaphorical, so nothing about the clothing improperly affects the audience's interpretation or distracts from the performance, but I understand how it could come across differently. And, believe it or not, Shia's costume was one of the "green flags" about the video for me, because it's very modest, in comparison to other male dancewear. They would've had to go out of their way to design or select something that didn't highlight the crotch (a sign they cared about making sure that didn't happen), _and_ he's probably wearing a compression-type something underneath. (But I do appreciate that I only noticed that because it was different from what I was used to seeing as a student and in performance.)

I only have one comment about the Elastic Heart video: a lot of people want to portray it as a pedophilic or creepy, as if Shia and Maddie are supposed to be portraying some kind of romance. But the song is actually about Sia and her troubled relationship with her alcoholic father. Shia is supposed to be representing her father and Maddie is her - the "strong wolf". The dance represents the complicated, sad relationship Sia has with her dad - how she tried to help him and he stayed behind. When I watched the video, that fight was what I saw. I'm sad so many people think it was pedophilia :/

I'm diagnosed autistic. Personally, I do not think that you are obligated to cast an autistic actor to play an autistic character. Actors are for acting. No one is offended that alcoholics or people with depression are not played by actors who are clinically depressed. Autistic actors play neuro-typical people all the time. Saying that autistic characters should be played only by autistic people is the same as saying that neuro-typical characters should be played only by neuro-typical actors. And that's a dangerous rhetoric. What they should do is to have a director who know what he's directing and what he\she is looking for so they can film it properly and guide the actor.
The script was atrocious, the visuals, the face expressions... they should've done better research, probably consult therapists who work with autistic kids and at least talk to autistic people... So yeah, I was insulted by that movie.

Welp some things cannot be acted by other people then themselves. say like black people. It would be black face like old times if they didn't cast a black person for a black character.
Also if you made an active depressed person to act on a character that is in their way to unalive that would be detrimental to their mental health. The same goes for addicts in all kinds of ways. Not everyone can handle acting through it without going into addiction again or having worse mental health. All humans are different. Some can handle it but I wouldn't take any chances 😅
Anyway I mostly agree with you! 👍🏻

    • @beanraris
      @beanraris 3 месяца назад +62

I can only partly agree, neurotypicals can play good representation but only if they don’t know it. There’s so many characters that are accidentally good representation even if they’re not explicitly autistic so you don’t have to be autistic to create a relatable character that the autistic community accepts as autistic. But if you’re intending to make an autistic character there is just no way for a neurotypical to do it correctly, it always ends up being stereotypical and harmful. We don’t need more representation of the way people think autistic people act, we need authentic autistic representation. Only autistic people can truly understand autism. Nothing about us without us.

The question is: is this what MADDIE wanted? It was always about everyone else BUT her, Abby was living throigh her, Melissa was living through her and then Sia. She had a very weird relationship with every adult she had in her life and this was probably because nobody was ever there to actually protect her as a child. I think if you see Elastic Heart as sexually suggestive, that says a LOT more about YOU than it does about the video. It's an interpretive dance where the majority of the time, the two are engaged in mock combat. What's sexual about that? To me it comes off as a father and daughter, and the daughter trying to get the father to wake up and break out of his destructive ways to become something better, and how she deals with the trauma he inflicts on her because of his dysfunctional life. So she fights to get them to both change for the better, but in the end, his mind and spirit are too broken to escape, and she has to leave without him.

6:35 I'm increasingly concerned with RUclips's policy on demonetizing content related to discussions of suicide and mental health. Words like 'died,' 'killed,' 'murdered,' and 'suicide' are not just words; they represent real issues that people face daily. Censoring or demonetizing them doesn't protect us; it silences crucial conversations and isolates those who are struggling. We need open dialogue more than ever. The existence of suicide prevention hotlines underscores the necessity of these discussions. Mental health is a critical topic, and we should be encouraging content creators who bring these issues to light, not penalizing them. RUclips, please reconsider this approach for the sake of healthy, open, and supportive dialogue on your platform.

I was stunned. These videos showed clear cases of animal abuse... I am not talking about some harsh words said in the vicinity of an animal or an animal being spanked or an animal being fed dry food instead of fresh food........ The videos I submitted showed physical violence- a man punching an animal that weighs less than 3 pounds.. the poor baby was only about a week old. The little baby, whom was about the same size as the mans fist, was tied to the side of a cage and the was subjected to a brutal beating. I've seen boxers in a ring treated that way but never a tiny and defenseless animal. My God, If i live 100 years i will never forget that video.... i was so shocked that it took me a second or two to process what i was seeing, it took a second to understand that this was a real video and this abuse was really happening...... I was so stunned that I couldn't even figure out what to do..... and while I tried to figure out how to make the video stop.... my eyes saw the baby's eyes looking back at me with such fear and such anguish...... my ears heard the sounds..... and the image and the sounds will haunt me the rest of my days....
That video was the 1st video i had ever seen like that- i have never witnessed such violence as that.......i was horrified. what was worse was the comments. The people rooting the abuser on. The people begging for new abuse to be inflicted. People with ordinary names that sounded like sunday school teachers and day care workers....... these people loved what they were seeing and wanted more..... my god.....
I was so angry and i just felt compelled to do something to help.... i wanted to help in some way if i could yet I couldn't help at all and it made me physically and mentally sick for days. look, I understand that monkeys are seen as vermin in other countries.... i get it. I can understand someone eradicating vermin. I have been known to lay down a mouse trap or two in my youth.... but I couldnt stomach it. call me what you will- I just cannot kill a poor little creature let alone to abuse it and torture it before killing it.... psychopaths get off on inflicting harm on something defenseless-period. You cannot claim to be normal and get off on watching shit like that and it sickens me that people can actually feel that wya. They can consider themselves normal while getting their rocks off watching animal abuse and torture. I wouldn't and couldn't film myself pulling the legs off of a cockroach let alone drowning a snake or a rat in a jar. That is cruelty and no living creature deserves that kind of treatment-vermin or not.
Sadly there were more videos than i could stomach to report and i reported hundreds. Even if i couldn't watch, the commenters would always spell out everything that happened in gruesome detail...... so i reported, and i reported and i reported and time and time again RUclips denied what was so plain to see. Time and time again youtube defended the video and refused to remove them...... baby monkeys being put into a jar filled with water and a lid being tightened down making sure that the little being had no way to escape and then the jar was viciously shook and the baby monkey left to drown. The jar was later opened and the baby monkey was in fact drown... drown and lifeless but oh n thats not where the video ended.... no no.... the poor thing was revived and made to breath again......... only to be subjected to the horror a 2nd or 3rd time.......
videos of baby monkeys being tied to fan blades whilst someone tied firecrackers to the arms and legs. The fan was then turned on after the firecrackers were ignited..... oh how the commenters celebrated those videos....
animals being whipped with extension cords... mostly baby monkeys.. Tiny little beings sucking on bottles and wearing diapers-were whipped with extension cords..... baby monkeys who had both arms and both legs yanked from their sockets and left laying on the floor writhing in pain and crying.... baby animals force fed until it was choking and eyes bugging out of their little heads..... drownings, beatings, suffocation, fake rescues, baby animals being given to a pack of dogs to play with..... the brutality was endless.
and i thought i could make a difference. pffft
Out of the 300+ total videos i submitted for animal abused less than 30 were removed. I reported the videos and was told that those blatant cases of abuse weren't abuse and that the content didn't break community standards yet dare someone say suicide or murder or rape and then youtube stands up and says "oh no you don't!!".
RUclips is getting rich off these videos and they couldn't care less about what animals are hurt as long as they receive their pound of flesh. Its sickening..... but here i am... i am culpable. I shouldn't of come back to youtube after my experience yet here my dumbass sits... I'm as guilty as youtube.......hell I'm more guilty because i should know better.

So when did all of you people become mental health professionals? Or suffered from extreme social anxiety? Then you shouldn't judge someone who is suffering from it. There are child performers and everything they are to do is in the contract. If the parent or child protests, then they should not sign the contract. No one forced this girl, other than her seemingly abusive mom, to work for Sia. There are lots of young performers, and no one knows whether the young person feels exploited, unless they or the parents/guardians speak up. It seems like everyone just wants to build people up, only to revel in tearing them down eventually.

@gracieb.3054 I am in no way suggesting anything negative about Sia's anxiety, HOWEVER I treat ALL children with the care I wish someone had shown me. If as a grown ass woman she suffered from anxiety from fame, knowingly putting a child in that spotlight is intentionally putting that child in danger. I dont care that they chose it. My kids would do a lot of things that would hurt them if they had a say. My son wants to be a RUclipsr, he is 9 and has bullies IRL. What he wants matters less than his mental and emotional safety, so I don't let him. When he is older I will give him the tools to face it as an adult, we can get him programing classes, public speaking classes, we can do all the leg work so he hits the ground running but he is a child and no adult should be putting them in danger knowingly. I have my own issues with the dance mom mentality Ala Gypsy, but this video was about Sia and how her mental health issues became so bad and then knowing what fame did to her put a child in front of her AS A SHIELD. I myself spent 10 years in crippling depression and the pandemic on top of that cause me social anxiety that gives me a 30 minute window in public before I get the shakes and sweats, I know anxiety. I would never expose a child to what gave me my issues, even if they wanted it. She could have gone thr route of Daft Punk or Marshmello. She could have hired an adult dancer to be her public face. I dont often say this, especially to someone who is trying to defend someone with a mental illness but you are wrong.

This comment has no relation to the main topic of the video.
I do not mean to discredit any effort put into the video.
However, I find it baffling that Sia's suicide attempt is being discussed in such detail. This is not because I believe Sia isn't exploiting Maddie or that this is not easily accessible knowledge.
My problem with it is that, as someone who has struggled severely with depression and has come close, this video was severely triggering while not giving any indication that it would discuss triggering topics. The amount of detail and information, the - basically - suicide notes, the drugs (censored only to avoid the video being affected by an age restriction). It strikes me as incredibly harmful and careless that the *only* trigger warning being given is for flashing lights.
A warning like that is important, yes. But sensitive topics that can send an unsuspecting viewer spiralling are just as important.
I do not mean to say that this video is bad. In fact, I can't say whether it is. Because, considering the first topic being discussed, I can not finish this video, as I feel it would risk my mental well-being.
It is so incredibly important for content creators to be aware that some of their content can be genuinely dangerous to the parts of their community with a mental health history. And I find it disappointing when a content creator is seemingly unaware.

Doesn't matter to them if the kid, male or female, is being preyed on or abused or even all the way to sexual abuse, just as long as the mom can get her rocks off. Elastic heart was actually pretty good if you look at it from a dance perspective, it looks like someone battling their inner demons, trying to be strong, but in the end, I think the person failed, and it was really sad, the part where Maddie-- the idea of this strong person trying to scare away a much older but scared version of the person's self (Shia) was trying to pull them out of that place, but he was still too scared in the end.

the point was that putting a child in a potentially uncomfortable situation and expecting them to be able to tell you if they're uncomfortable is just a bad idea from the start. letting the child know that they have that option is great, but expecting them to actually act on it is ignorant at best, especially given maddie's history specifically.
as a child who didn't even grow up in this type of space, i never wanted to admit that something was too much for me. i always had something to prove. maddie is that but exponentially more intense. that was the point.

    • @Seldarius

I think it’s the sentence „I can’t handle it“. There’s a big difference between „I am uncomfortable“ or „I don’t want to do this“ and „I can’t handle it“. Most of us can handle a number of things that we don‘t want to handle or that make us uncomfortable, but we have been taught that sometimes being uncomfortable is necessary, so we push our limits. Think going to the dentist.
The kids on dance mums had drilled into their heads since they were children that their comfort didn’t matter - they could handle it. They probably all can handle a lot, but at what cost? Not being able to handle anything is considered a weakness, so admitting to it is an unlikely scenario.
