Grafting fruit trees for beginners Part 1, collecting and storing bud wood.

This will be the first video in a series of grafting videos to help beginners grasp the concept of grafting. This video covers the basics for collecting and storing bud wood AKA scion wood. It is this wood that carries the genetics of the fruit that you want. Grafting is a method of cloning.

Does it make a difference whether you’re using fruit buds or vegetative buds? Do you make the cuts where a bud is?

Absolutely makes a difference. Use only vegetative buds. Makes a difference where you cut when you graft, not so much when storing the wood

@@nickkasko2097 Do grafts do better if they receive more sunlight?
I want to make a multi graft cherry tree. I know they sell them but not with the varieties I want. First off, I need root stock. I don't want to buy a $50 tree from the nursery only to cut it down to use the root stock. How can I multiply my root stock? Do you know how to root hardwood cuttings?

@@travisk5589 yes for the most part, grafts tend to grow better in more sunlight but take better in part shade. That said, I never shade my grafts because my climate has cool wet spring.
Cherry is very difficult to root and the best way to propagate rootstock would be to cut it way down, let it sucker, then mound up the suckers with soil.
It’s a lot of work and I find planting cherry seeds make great rootstock with much less work.

@@nickkasko2097 I tried planting cherry seeds and all I got was moldy seeds. They dried out for a few weeks, then sat in the refrigerator for a month before I planted them. I planted them with the hard shell on and with it cracked off.
I still have a bad of dried seeds in my refrigerator. I guess it's time that I try planting a few more

@@travisk5589 don’t let cherry seeds dry to much. Stratify them outside in wood chips immediately after eating the cherries. They sprout all the time for me in the spring. Mimic nature.
