Susquehanna Smallmouth July Rising Water Patterns

  • I had not been on the Susquehanna since February, and had a day to hit the Harrisburg area. I stayed well below the "in-bounds" region of the Bassmaster Kayak Series event that started the following day to give those competitors room to prefish. In all, I covered over 14 miles, up and back from the West Fairview launch. Targeting smallmouth in grass beds and turbulent convergences of current brought the best bites, especially late in the day. The less than a foot rise in river level made for better power fishing bite than we would see with normal summer low clear conditions.

    Jeff, this video helped me understand what I've been seeing lately on my River. What I found even more surprising was that I was throwing the live target crankbait shallow crawl in Blue Craw. I love the jackhammer but I enjoy throwing the shallow cranks!

    Fished near Harrisburg's Lady Liberty 2 days after you were out. Floating grass was unbearable. Guess the 8 or 9 inch rise in a less than a day stirred everything up. My only luck was letting a small plastic Nikko or Basspro XPS hellgermitte bump off the bottom. Ned jig with hook cut off on one end, 1/0 mosquito hook at other end. Grass on only about 1/5 casts. Something to maybe use next time you run into this. Looks like I'll be breaking out the jackhammer next time regardless! Topwater was starting to go crazy on the river prior to rise, unfortunate the floating grass put it on hiatus.

    Gosh, I wish I had a river like that close. I live in Todd NC and have the New River here, but my area doesn’t produce much. I’d have to float all the way to Virginia for the fishing to get better.

    • @TheLittleStuff
      @TheLittleStuff  2 месяца назад

      The Susquehanna is special. That being said, I think that it’s more likely to catch a 6 plus out of the New than the Susquehanna. You must not be too far from some great eastern TN rivers too.

      @@TheLittleStuff Yeah, it’s not too far to go. Just wish my direct area was better. Apparently from the locals, Boone sucks out thousands of gallons for App State and other businesses rendering the river very low.

    What a marathon of a day. Were you able to fish on a single battery? From the bowels of Harrisburg to above Rockville is quite a distance to cover going against the current. The perseverance paid off.

      I brought two but only used one. It’s that inflatable. Seven years of testing different boats led me to design the Osprey, then the Peregrine. The Peregrine does so much more speed and range with the same amount of power. I got this one right.

  • @rexbronzbackhero2373

    Jeff my man love your instructions,advices,and videos. I want to get an inflatable. What is ur honest opinion? I looked at the NRS typhoon 106. How durable is inflatables what happens if you get a leak? I float all the rivers and it’s tributaries in middle TN.I look forward to hearing from you.

    • @TheLittleStuff
      @TheLittleStuff  2 месяца назад

      I searched “Typhoon” on the NRS website and didn’t find anything. That being said, inflatables are tougher than you might think, but not indestructible. Fish fin puncture is the most common issue, and it’s a slow slow leak. If you do manage to have a larger rupture, the on the water fix is to use Tear Aid Type B, and a K-Pump mini to get back to inflation. Please check out my entire playlist “Inflatable Kayaks” to learn more. Also know that I designed the hulls of the Innovative Sportsman kayaks to be more durable- double layered in certain key areas.

    Great content Jeff! Just curious if your experience tends to be such that you feel the bite in these rivers is better later in the day and near dusk as opposed to the early morning bite? I am also interested in the preference of smallies eating better in cloudy vs sunny skies. There is a lot of tradition in bass fishing and some of it is not accurate. It seems that we catch more fish in sunny sky weather in the streams than cloudy days and I wonder if that is the same for you or not? Thanks,

    • @TheLittleStuff
      @TheLittleStuff  2 месяца назад

      It’s all over the place. I tend to have better evening bite on the Susquehanna. Now on the next two videos, I stay out and camp on an island in the Juniata. I do so-so for the dusk bite, but absolutely crush them from 5:30 am through almost noon. As we move into late summer and early fall, the river holds a fog, or at least the mountains hold some low clouds late into the morning, which absolutely helps until it burns off.
      The grass beds make more oxygen as the sun hits it, and they love hunkering down in those areas on a sunny day.

    Your subsurface bait looks to be a 1-5 foot with that plastic angle up front. For instance if you look at a Strike King Hybrid Hunter Jr. look how the angle is about 90 degree. I looked at these recently and purchased one that is marker “S” on the bottom of the lure. It’s a little confusing the way Strike King markets them but you want the shallow 1-3 feet runner that is marked with an “S” on the bottom! Otherwise the regular one runs a little deeper. And I have nothing to do with Strike King just started looking for a real shallow sub surface lure for river fishing. Or try heating that lip on yours and bend it slightly down there are RUclips videos on modifying the lips. Hope this helps and thanks for all your excellent teaching and videos!!!

    I noticed you seem to use regular fishing line. I use braided and wondering on the Susqie does it make a difference. The line I'm using tends to be expensive and also a hassle sometimes to tie or cast. Thanks

      I use 20 lb braid connected to a fluorocarbon leader, usually 12 to 20 lb, depending on the application.

      I don’t film continuously. I call out “Go Pro start recording” and that’s how most action clips start. It lets me be as prolific as I am. I average over 200 videos a year. Many of those are an hour long. If I filmed the whole time, I might pull off a video or two each month. It’s common to hear of kayak anglers who film but don’t produce that much say, “I’ve got some amazing footage. I just need enough time to edit”. My edit on a one hour video takes about 5 hours between the three cameras I use. I also blow through about $2K in hard drives each year. That would easily quadruple if I continuously filmed.
