  • Wage slavery is a term used to criticise exploitation of labour by businesses, that keep wages low or stagnant, in order to maximise profit. The Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, equates salary earned by workers in the country as a "slave wage". The prime labour union at a function in Abuja, asked the National Assembly to work with the tripartite committee on the new minimum wage, to establish mechanism for regular systematic review of wage levels, more so, to ensure they keep pace with inflation and cost of living. Meanwhile, the stance of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC on the matter is a terse one. It insists on a 250,000 naira benchmark as minimum wage. Are we in a catch 22 situation?
