  • Is it time to give up on your music career? Well, that depends. Music marketing and learning how to promote your music can be exhausting and sometimes you just have to be real with yourself. I didn't want to make this video, but I felt I had to.

I need to push through the self doubt. Even though people tell me U have what it takes, sometimes I really feel like I want to give up and "get a job." One other thing is staying focused on one thing.

Social media marketing. I am extremely introverted and it doesn't feel right to expose myself to people, and instead of making music, I'm doing 10 people's jobs. Why can't I just use my art, my music to market myself? I am being told in order to be successful in this society, that I have to manipulate people into listening to my music through social media. I'd rather just post visual content (music videos) and my music and have my fanbase grow organically (shows, music being shared, word of mouth). Basically how everyone did before the internet existed. Is this being unrealistic? I'm not trying to be a social media influencer, I'm trying to be a full-time musician/artist.

Well said!!! I'm 60 and I've been doing this stuff all my life! I'll never quit!!! Giving up is not an option. My goal when I had my first professional gig at age 14, is just the same today. I can't not play. It's just how I'm wired! Thanks for the great advice. I agree 100%! :)

  • @oledahl.

BECAUSE I LOVE MUSIC FFS!!!! (sorry for swearing!) I'm 42 and have quit my good paid job as a Sound, Light and video Manager at the Norwegian Royal Opera and Ballet just to make music! I sit in front of the screens 10 hours+ each and every single day producing and trying out techniques just to get better at it! And the rest of the day I do a little workout to stay in shape and most important: I visit people and take phone calls to get contacts, to get noticed in the industry etc. That's even better than getting a follower. I do that too. Each day! But the personal aspect of marketing is not something you should just dismiss! THAT would be stupid!!! And hell no, it's not for fame or money! It's my PASSION!!! I love to make music, I love to DJ, And I love to see people get high on the tunes I spin! So please, don't tell me I'm not committed. Maybe I'm even more committed than You Adam, who knows. I haven't met you personally so I can't tell. Nor can you about me!
But one thing I have to mention that's bothering me is: I've seen on your Instagram some of the people you hang with, and at least one of them is a person that does these commercials about buying a program (a bot) that would help you get more followers and it(the program) would even manage your followers and answer them and your emails AUTOMATICALLY! You know I've been listening to your videos several times each and I remember You said such things were trash! So when I see you hug this creep and even let his adverts run just before your video starts, well, let's just say that I don't exactly appreciate it!!! Now I need to chill because nothing makes me angrier than someone telling me I'm not doing enough...

I definitely have this problem. I have had issues with serious depression over the last 10 years. I'm not personally constantly battling with technique or creativity, I know I can learn these things, the problem for me is an uphill battle with my own head. I'm still trying to figure out how to find that drive, and build up momentum, but I'm not giving up.

Music has been my passion for 14 years. When is was a teenager and early 20's I was filled with so much belief and passion that I had what it takes to make it in this industry. Around my mid to late 20's I started to lose hope that I could ever make it.
By this point I had invested so much into music but because of bills and rent was forced to work various jobs to make ends meet.
My passion is still there and I write when I can, but as each year goes by I feel my belief that I'll every make a living from music slowly fading away.
I also doubt that I'll ever find a job that will make me happy as every job that I've worked in since has made me miserable from sales, graphic design, barbering, retail, childcare, hospitality.... all are just trading time for money.

Adam, First off... I wanted to say thank you for your amazing videos. I've never seen someone put out content that was not only motivating, but truly educational without all the fluff and done so with gusto. Second, my wife is the musician in the family and its to her that I've forwarded your channel in the hopes that she will gain momentum with her Jazz band. Though I'm not a musician, I too work in the audio world, but in a different context. As a voice actor, growing my business and trying to develop followers for the purposes of marketing, I've found these videos to be just as applicable. So again, just wanted to give you a quick shout out and my appreciation.

Can totally understand about the why am I doing this shit, I woke up today feeling like it and it wasn't long ago when I started! But my mind changes as I get back into it, it's starting to become my main pass time. A whole lot more constructive than spending hours gaming and achieving nothing. At the end of a long working day in my normal job, your words has most definitely helped to lift my spirits on a seemingly mammoth task ahead of me as a musician, singer and songwriter. Great advice, Adam! I’ve been stricken with creative drought for so long, and it’s ridiculously hard to get motivated and inspired lately.
It’s not so much a feeling of entitlement, but rather a feeling of struggle. I’m bored with life and I want to do bigger things and help the world, but I’m impatient and wish I could just have the funds available without the work.
My intentions and goals are big. I have my “why.” I’m an inventor, entrepreneur, musician, artist, and philosopher. Problem is, none of these attributes matter if I don’t get off my ass.
How do I get re-inspired and motivated about my passions?

I'm doing a lot of things and not focusing. Big ass career and raised kids into adulthood. But still need to work, and support others hard to wind or down without self sabotaging income. Honestly have talent and very positive outlook in life generally. But self doubt does come into it and so does finding my voice or my focussed genre is a factor. The non musical people around me don't care; though not obstructive just needy, and the musos I played with say playing for fun is OK, but won't pursue a career. Anyone of these is easy to attack individually- but all together grinding. Looking for like minded encouragement and accountability : I do that in all my business ventures. Love your channel

Hi Adam, I just wanted to say how much I appreciate your content. I am a classical musician who makes most of his income through retirement community gigs and now that I have a stable gig schedule and a reliable income I have really been looking to expand my social media presence. I have been posting a new video every week (so far in week 3) and I have started posting once a week about my project on instagram and twice a week on FB, once with pictures taken from my youtube video and once with the link. Though I have not been making 20 new fans a day and though my aim is not to get 1000 new followers in a few months I am committed to producing weekly content. I have been following your advice, perhaps with a grain of salt to fit my lifestyle and I am getting more likes and shares on a consistent basis. Thank you for your advice and candor. Keep on keeping on and get well soon.

Thanks Adam. Yeah motivation is often difficult to muster up when the universe constantly gives you signals that it's not interested in your output.
Well, it can SEEM that way, and you can take it that way, but it's better to see these things as a form of feedback. I am constantly observing people's response to my music, particularly in relation to my developing vocal voice and stage command.
And if I have to address these developmental things alone, well that's just how I have to do it -- time alone in a rehearsal room with nothing but an mp3 player and a mic, time in front of the mirror (sounds ridiculously narcissistic, but it has to be done) and all that.
I realise my weaknesses, and instead of dreading the practice, I bear in mind that the practice itself DOES result in improvement and a better response form listeners. It does, it does, it does, it does. And this applies to the work we put into content production and promoting ourselves, too.
    Thanks again, mate.

Adam, you have such a soothing voice it’s crazy .. also, could you please make a video about how to get actual money with music. I know you talk a lot about marketing your brand but what are the first steps, for getting paid for what you love. I know it’s a hard question but if anyone can answer it. It’s you 🔥
Much love to you and your family ❤️

it's funny because I always thought that the music itself would lead to success. As we all know, thats the easy part. The business side is what determines success. I have heard it being 10% music and 90% business. The thought of just giving up and trying something else does cross my mind every now and then, but for some reason my heart won't let me. I've fully convinced my heart to keep beating throughout the ups and downs. I know it takes work, and I am not a fan of work, so I want to change that. I need to not be lazy when it comes to the business side of music. I know one day it will all pay off. I will be able to prove everyone whoever doubted me wrong. Most importantly, I will do it for myself. To everyone else in a similar funk, keep grinding. We'll get there.

Yo adam! you've helped me a lot. your mention of chronic sinus issues might be an opportunity for me to help you.. i used to have chronic sinus congestion too, my oral health was even suffering from it. I cut out a couple foods that would make me feel bloated and started eating a bunch of live food (probiotic stuff: kimchi, fermented veggies, etc.) and as many different types of fiber as i could find. I'm sleeping better, no more mouth breathing and I barely even get seasonal allergies anymore.. MUCH LOVE hope it helps.

Excellent video. Nevertheless I gotta say: sometimes the results INDEED aren’t worth the effort, and I have resolved to retire from music next year. And I found my *WHY*, it’s because I’m done. I haven’t stopped since I picked up piano at age 7-8, all through bands, music lessons, music college, music examinations, gigs, recordings, working as a music teacher, playing here and there, learning multiple instruments, learning multiple musical skills and to still be living with my parents at age 28? Man, that’s not life, that’s barely existing. They can’t support me forever, and sure as hell I’m not gonna live off my parents forever. I gotta move on, with or without music. I’m done, 20 years done already, I have put all of me to nothing, and I ain’t putting any extra miles.
