I love how he differentiates between her being corrected vs being in trouble. And how he says “if I was paying attention”- he understands that dogs are dogs and it’s our job to teach them and keep them connected
I love seeing all your insight into the dog's reactions. We are first time lab owners of a stray who just went through her first heat. She is an amazing dog, but we are training late. This video has been a big help.
Wow, what a beautiful dog and video. I have a 1 year old black Lab named Midnight. She is so easy to train. Animals are such a beautiful gift from Jehovah!
This is great when you have no other distractions. There wasn't another person or dog that came into play. I'd love to see more about keeping stay or heel with big distractions. But great video and a beautiful dog.
I just bought 2 lab retrievers all chocolate a male and female at 11wks old. I can't wait to get them trained and take them with me camping and hunting.
My lab used to chew everything, I repeat, everything under the sun- including bike seats, buckets, socks, quilts. What caused him to chew was the lack of exercise I provided with him. Now he gets 2 or 3 long walks everyday and he doesn't chew at all anymore! But we are still working with him on listening. Like your lab he listen when i have treats. 😢
Now that's a properly, calmly trained animal. Good to see someone not using 'treats' either. Praise from you as 'pack leader' is far better for their mental and physical wellbeing than any cookie. Nice vid!
Thank you fishing is life. Hard to use treat training for 800 yard blind retrieves. A solid positive relationship combined with a strong foundation of training is the way to go.
Thank you for the video. Our Lab was a rescue dog. I am not sure how long she was running loose before animal control found her. The shelter did not want us using choke chain collars. We used them on our last two dogs, so I didn't see a problem with it. Good information about the head shake, I didn't know that is what they are doing. We are lucky that she is not aggressive and doesn't bark.
Your video has a lot of great tips. I'm personally not a fan of jerk and praise training, but I still appreciate information you provided in your video, like to keep a loose leash and to pay attention to your dog.
I got my lab when he was 12 and he was extremely disciplined. I could put his food in front of him tell him to sit and wait, walk away and come back then tell him to begin. I want another one
wow! i want to buy this dog when we get a house, coz ryt now we are still living in apartment, and i've done research about this dog and they say it is a sport dogs and is better in wide open spaces, and i discovered that they are a good swimmers!!! i'm excited! i wanna own one of this! :D
Thank you for this. Watched a ton of videos from owners, and wanted to avoid giving treats or that "click" thing. I want to TRAIN my dog, and reward AFTER training. Repetition breeds familiarity.
I have two sibling 16-month old male -- chocolate and black -- labs who are the just about the most important things in my life and I always let them know that. I have read several reports from high end lab handlers who say that labs enjoy praise even more than treats. My babies love an occasional treat of meat, but man, do they respond to praise. Especially my chocolate boy "Porter." He'll sit still forever as long as I touching him and talking sweetly to him.
yes it use to be more noticeable with chocolates, but now all colors are a mixed bag. Separate each regularly for there own time, and work on sit and stay while you calmy praise the good behavior. Clock in on a sit for a period of time, and require calm. They will follow your energy if you persevere and remain calm your self for a period of time. Eventually working both together doing the same. They use each other as a trigger to build excitability controlling the energy level to the stars!
You are exactly right, for the past two years I never use a choke on any dog. Even when I did use it properly, no choking, just an audible. I never want a pull, always loose. You can easily get results with just a dog tag jingle on a regular collar, quick corrections and then lay on the positive!!
@antidescent I find the dogs are actually distracted and focused on food, rather than task on hand. Some breeds food will help, but the labs are very trainable without the food baiting.
Well done on on obedience, I like that. What about the drive to find a crip at 200 yards? Do you have to take her there or will she have the drive to do it herself? I like a dog that is a team player and can think for itself................ challenging, right? A true gundog would rather hunt than eat. You made a plus point with labs, no treats ....... praise and more work. Good video, better than most! f
CANT WAIT FOR MY LAB TO BE THAT GOOD .SHE IS A RESCUE DOG SO SHES BEEN IN A PIN FOR A LONG TIME ,VERY UNRULY @ 1 YEAR OLD .SO HOPING WITH REPETITION SHE WILL BE THAT GREAT .LOOKS JUST LIKE MY SISSY .SWEET .
I just got a 1 year old Lab. She was totally ignored by her owner. She does pretty good on the leash, without pulling, and sits. Been playing ball with her, and she won't bring the ball back unless I go inside and tell her I can't play if she doesn't bring the ball. How do I get her to give the ball back? She will eventually drop it, if I start to go inside.
Love this.. will continue trying with my Melo, ( Black Lab) . My chocolate Lab is wonderful and is younger, both are lovely dogs.- The younger one is actually more obedient, it's her personality.
I have a 4 months Cane Corso, she's a female. We got her at 4 months and she was at someone that didn't pay attantion with her and know she's really scared when i go walk her outside, she's afraid of cars, loud sounds and other people. I walk her every day since i got her but she's really scared, sometimes she stops. What should i do? It's ok if i "force" her with "come" , "step" , "sit" , "down (when jumps on me) ?. I feel like i strangle her
Mrbaltimore2001 Well I got my lab from a breeder and he's been driving me crazy since I got him. I feel like she switched pups on me but it's too late now.
Great clip, I am wondering can you help me train my Labrador not to eat non food items while on the walk ? She is 13 months old and this is a habit I find very difficult to get the better of. Thank you
Do you train her after exercise? It's impossible to get my dog to stay still unless I take her for a strenuous work out first. She jumps off of walls until I take her out.
Hi , i have also purchase an 8 month Labrador the other week and he is doing ok with the training that i am giving him from your little video and i will like to thank you for that !! I also have a question , i have 2 years old son that he was bite by a dog a bit long ago and he became scare of dogs and honestly i didn't like that very much especially because i love animals and i don't want to see him being afraid of your best friend later on !
Very Cool! I have a 12 week old that I'm working on "Heel" She doesn't even seem to be getting the idea yet. Is it best to make her sit everytime she gets away from my left side? I had to go away from the choke collar because she was trying to drag me everytime we worked hence really choking herself. She is automatic with "Sit" though.
Could i please ask, at what age you start training, until what age do you train, and finally how often should the training sessions be, and how long? Thanks in advance
Thanks for the nice video, although i have a small problem..she is 61/2 months now everything is ok except sometimes she sees another dog or person she wants to play and she runs like a rabbit, away...i use a soft and not loud voice and not cookies or treets.no chain only the leash and her collar.do u have any tip for me?
I have a 6 month black lab rescue, he's pretty good aside from his enormous amounts of energy that annoys my Chihuahua at times and his mouthing/nipping. I'm having trouble keeping him from nipping and putting his mouth on me or my clothes. I'm not sure of the best way to keep him from biting and nipping me. Any suggestions?
This is excellent. I have a Chocolate Lab but he only works for treats, I would like him to work because I say so, is this just a matter of me repeating my commands and praise?
Do you notice a difference between the different colors of Labs? I have 2 Chocolates that seem to have the separate strengths but they are so amped all of the time that it's hard to get through to them.
@fiozzi83 Mae is field trial stock, Daddy is American and Canadian National champion, Five Star General Patton. An athlete like non other. Never, never use a shock collar to train. It is only used to make corrections when your dog absolutely positively knows what you have trained them to do. Shocking an untrained or poorly trained dog confuses them.
My husand and I are excited to have a Chocolate labrador puppy be part of our family by beginning of next month (they have not been born yet), and will be a of English breed, thank you SO MUCH for this, I am researching and learning how to properly train our puppy to be a happy and obedient dog! I have a question, I understand english breeds are more show dogs and American breeds are field dogs (hunting/field trials), out of curiosity... can english breed easily be trained for hunting as well (not for trials, my husband wants to get back into the hunting and we were just curious on that)?
I have a old lab his name is toby he problem to old to be trained but I what him to get out of his dog house but he’s so wild you dust have to get his energy out
@vancee3 yes of course, keep in mind the lab has two years doing her own training. You have to start a new consistent obedience routine, and exercise. Older dogs learn quick but they have to know you are serious and committed to training.
Hey! I have a 2 yrs old male black lab, and it's "trained"... He knows how to sit, walk, go down, wait, etc, etc, etc... But I have the BIGGEST PROBLEM OF ALL, when he sees another animal he gets crazy and starts pulling, barkind and bristling. I'm petite, I'm 1,56 cms and my weight is 51 kgs, when he do that I always fall or get another bruise. Can you help me? I tried to punish and correct him.... but it didn't work. Please I don't want more 10pm walks...
I want to train my dog to dove hunt with me. I want her to sit right by me or my dad at all times while we are out there. Due to the rattlesnakes in the area I don't want her to wander around out in the open. She is a 1 1/2 year old female labrador retreiver. Do you have an tips so I can get her out there?
never had a lab mixed with a retreiver, but I have a black lab retreiver with white down her Chest. Shes about 3-4 months, and we baught her from another owner. Shes had three owners, and I'm trying to potty train her. any advice?
Ted, I love your videos. Thanks for posting and keep'em coming. My family and I recently adopted a black female. She is now 16 weeks and being crated trained. She was extremely behaved until a few weeks ago when she started jumping on the kitchen table/counters. My wife & kids (son 7yrs and daughter 11yrs) and I correct her with a stern "NO" whenever she does this and then praise her with "good girl" and pets when she gets down but she only seems to be getting worse. Any advice. Thanks!! DW
Pls tell how can i teach my dog labra golden she is 8 months she dnt understand when i say sit . Up she dont respons wat i have to do ...how can i train
Labs = dogs that can find water in a dry desert. They luv snow!!! They're goofy. Bombproof. The perfect outdoorsy person's kind of dog. Greeeaatt dogs.
@CottonwoodHuntClub This video has given me a lot to work towards! I have a 10 month old male black lab, do you have any tips on how to calm your dog before training sessions, my lab is very hyper and it is hard to get his attention at times. Also, we have been using treats, but I would rather not, how can I transition to just pets and praises?
Thanks for this. I used to have a German Shepherd and let me tell you it is a lot more difficult to train a Lab. They have too much energy and are more playful lol.
i have only one problem with my female lab. its around 7 months she listens to all my commands but only when the gates open she goes out i am afraid that other dogs shouldnt bite it and when she runs out and when i go to bring her back she gets hyper and starts runnig away fast. plz respond me that how should i teach her not to run out when gates open
....the continuation of my question is here as i run out of space ...so, Hook (this is his name) keep biting him while playing and now i don't think that is a good idea , what will be the best way to handle such behaviors like biting / jumping on my child and other children later on ?...thanks !!
Hi, you have a nice lab, i have one myself, but I dont like to see that you are using this line...I can see that your girl is scared of being choked again, which leads her to comply with the commands. Then again, I can see on her tail that she has fun... but I use no choking line to train my Roxy, instead loads of patience....anyway good job...thanks
CottonwoodHuntClub can you please come down to lathrop c.a. & trian my black,,we need your help..We will pay the price just help us & name your price $$..thanks
@memphismike1235 Back up your training to include check cord, toss retrieve within cord length, release dog to retrieve, as soon as he picks it up turn your back while holding cord, very positive recall as you walk AWAY. The dog will follow and indiscreetly turn and get delivery to hand.
What to if the dog just refuses to heel? My dog know what the command stands for yet it chooses to ignore it most of the time, especially when I let her off the leash, it can ran off and ignore me for several seconds/minutes.
Charles Vue I think that it depends on the dog. If you have an energetic dog, exercise could help make him/her settle down enough for focusing on training. With my labs I use exercise as a reward after training.
@chandnishiek1234 work on the sit and stay command near the gate, first with it closed and then with it open,. The dog is not to use the open mode as a trigger to go. Open and close gate repetitively as dog remains on sit. Require a sit and stay with every door opening including your house. This takes a few days to turn around old pattern of breaking when gate opens. Require a higher level of obedience through positive training.
@ codecrt321 at six weeks they are very capable of learning simple command: sit, down, stand, stay, shake. Don't overwork and try to punish if they don't understand because they are just puppies.
hey I have a brown lab she lives on a little farm very well minded dog she's about 8 years old we go hiking she's fine hunting fine but every time I take her out in the field all she cares about is a ball even when I dont have the ball and where walking around she spends the hour or two that where out there just looking for a ball she won't let people pet her she's gotta find that ball how do i stop that
I've had my chocolate Labrador Zipper watch this video a half dozen times now, and he’s still no better behaved than before.
I laughed out loud at this comment ! LOL
Same mines a chocolate one too and still can’t be trained
Bro Ben I have a chocolate one no matter what I do he is not trainable
I love how he differentiates between her being corrected vs being in trouble.
And how he says “if I was paying attention”- he understands that dogs are dogs and it’s our job to teach them and keep them connected
This is like the perfect Labrador pup! I have a black Lab pup and we are working on it!

Same with mine and also my child
What i meant to say; was I havea Black lab & a German Shepherd and I just love them. Thank you for the tips i have tried them with great results.
Now that's a properly, calmly trained animal. Good to see someone not using 'treats' either. Praise from you as 'pack leader' is far better for their mental and physical wellbeing than any cookie. Nice vid!

I've got dog just like his..They are same.Same movement,and same body.Awsome..
Is it possible to train 3 labs at once or do they need individual training.? Also how long does it usually take you to properly train them?
thanks a lot for posting this video. I like your ways of training a dog. you are kind with her. cool

I like your soft tone...dogs can hear fine and most folks are too loud. Quiet spokes less birds...especially late late season roosters!
Love this.. will continue trying with my Melo, ( Black Lab) . My chocolate Lab is wonderful and is younger, both are lovely dogs.- The younger one is actually more obedient, it's her personality.
I have a 4 months Cane Corso, she's a female. Yes....you can always teach your dog something new.
A dog behavior, is a reflection of its owner(s)
Mrbaltimore2001 Well I got my lab from a breeder and he's been driving me crazy since I got him. I feel like she switched pups on me but it's too late now.
Great clip, I am wondering can you help me train my Labrador not to eat non food items while on the walk ? She is 13 months old and this is a habit I find very difficult to get the better of. Thank you
Beautiful dog. Awesome video. Thank you

Hi , i have also purchase an 8 month Labrador the other week and he is doing ok with the training that i am giving him from your little video and i will like to thank you for that !!

my sconks outons nine weeks old shepherd lab cross is really smart , fetches sits etc but gets really rowdy for awhile after outside playing
Thank you sooo much your channel is cool keep it up and I'm getting a lab retriever
excellent show of your training skills. i'll work on imitating them for my pup soon!
great video for new trainers
Good demonstration of constructive practical training raher than high fives

@fiozzi83
Mae is field trial stock, Daddy is American and Canadian National champion, Five Star General Patton. An athlete like non other. Mae has become one of the greatest Upland and waterfowl retrievers. I have trained labs for 40 years, and it is amazing in the past 15 years of the complete transformation of the breed into every shape size and color.
I have a 2 year old Red Lab. Is it normal to have a lab that is still a puppy that is way much taller than you when on hind legs and when on all four legs is up to your elbow when bent?
I love my yellow lab "Bettis" but he gets so stubborn sometimes, and he will jump on me and nearly knock me down
mine too I have a chocolate Lab and 11 mths and get down right aggressive when I pet him always biting so I don't know about this breed...lol
Unless you like the behavior, it’s your responsibility to fix it. If you don’t know what to do, get someone who does to help/teach you. Good luck!
I'm shure you have it under control by now but If you bump your knee on his or her chest, he or she will eventually get the point not to jump on you
I've tried kneeing her, holding her paws, ignoring her, and putting her in time out......NO success. She's 8 months old.
@@canterlevi I have....the trainer told me she was "special" and needed calm down drugs...so don't assume it's as easy as you think.
Do you use remote collars when training your pups? I have a 7 month old yellow lab and I would like to start taking her to the park without her on her leash, although she usually does not listen when I tell her to come back.

They CAN but they will not be as fast and as high prey drive. Also, make sure the puppies are at least 8 weeks old when you get him/her!
Thanks so much! Yup, she will be 8 weeks when we get her, she is coming from a quality breeder, and we are so excited to have her! Thanks again! :)
No problem, it enjoys me to help and answer questions! People who aren't hesitant to ask questions are the best lab owners!

I'm 13 and I just got a Labrador retriever puppy
Im getting a labrador soon, but im not sure at what age i am going to start training him, what age would u suggest
you do a excellent job !
I have a old lab his name is toby he problem to old to be trained but I what him to get out of his dog house but he’s so wild you dust have to get his energy out
Cool
i have a 4 month female lab and she is the female version of marley, but she's adorable ^^
pre six months all fun and games, at 6 -7 months I step up the obedience training.
thanks for good video, relatively sterner and with lesser positive reinforcement like treats than nowadays, though.
my dog is nearly 8 years old. is it possible to be able to get her started on upland?
@vancee3
yes of course, keep in mind the lab has two years doing her own training. You have to start a new consistent obedience routine, and exercise. Older dogs learn quick but they have to know you are serious and committed to training.
how can you save a dog from cancer? and if it does take well to removing the tumors can you still use it to waterfowl hunt?

I have a Lab/Pit mix. About 6 weeks old. She occasionally Pees and Poops in the House. I put her outside and she barks constantly!! What do i do??
Great training video - don't you think you actually don't even need the Choke chain?
Nice Vid... I've got an almost 7 month old black lab and she doesn't really listen and gets into everything lol..
my male labrador is stuborn he wont even sit or do nothing what do i do
how early should training be done? I have a 12 week old Chocolate
Thank You for this! My 11 week old Lab is driving me up the wall...nothing like my German Shepherd. I'm almost losing my mind behind this one.😩
Can you train a 4 year old dog just as easily?

You've got a great dog.
My dog know what the command stands for yet it chooses to ignore it most of the time, especially when I let her off the leash, it can ran off and ignore me for several seconds/minutes.
training a dog is best after exercise or before??? anyone know....
Charles Vue I think that it depends on the dog. If you have an energetic dog, exercise could help make him/her settle down enough for focusing on training. With my labs I use exercise as a reward after training.
Before and after, mix it up. All dogs need to learn to calm regardless of distraction, before exercise, ect.
Oh my gosh! I love Chocolate labs the best! Black labs second and golden labs third! But I would still kill for a lab!
@ codecrt321 at six weeks they are very capable of learning simple command: sit, down, stand, stay, shake. Don't overwork and try to punish if they don't understand because they are just puppies.
I am getting a 14 months old labrador. Can you still learn it "high fives" and roll over etc?
hey I have a brown lab she lives on a little farm very well minded dog she's about 8 years old we go hiking she's fine hunting fine but every time I take her out in the field all she cares about is a ball even when I dont have the ball and where walking around she spends the hour or two that where out there just looking for a ball she won't let people pet her she's gotta find that ball how do i stop that
(tightens the chain)
dog: "oh shoot! i'm in trouble"
