i'm a barber in vancouver, canada, been out of barber school for almost a year. yesterday at the shop i had a pretty shit day, felt like i kinda got worse somehow, wasn't too pleased with any of my cuts to be honest. i felt a bit better today but still havin a bad day. watching this has most definitely inspired me as well as given me some pointers. thank you so so much for this video and i can't wait to get back into the shop tomorrow and use some new found knowledge thanks to you. keep up the good work!
Good for you man and I'm thrilled my vid has helped you to shake off the barber blues!! I get it sometimes too man and I've been cutting for 30yrs. Don't let it get you down and keep the passion going bro!!
It's great to see a true talent at work.. love your technique some barbers can't manage that type of finish with clipper guards let alone using clipper over comb. Loving your work 👍
Wow! A real barber with both hands! So envy. I am lefty, and literally can't hold anything (when I work) with my right hand. LOL. Greetings from Venezuela. You've got a subscriber here. Pretty great techniques.👏🏼👏🏼
I am learning about barbering and work in Barber shop in Brisbane but never see YOUR clippers over comb( my barber shop never do this) . I always search new skills from You Tube. Thanks for your job.
Cheers man, what you see in the video is the standard way that we work in my shop, i train all my apprentices this way. It's hard going but really rewarding! Thanks for watching man and good luck
I would love step by step videos on your clipper over comb method and just overall approach when doing haircuts. I've just started learning to cut hair about six months ago and I'm tired of using the plastic guards and want to learn a more traditional way of going about it.
i watched this video like more than 10 times , Please teach us the art ! i mess up the back when connecting right and left side in the middle with clipper over comb , i dont knw what i do wrong but i get a bald kinda spot in the back.
Hey man, the best way to avoid that is to work your way from the first side you start with to the back and actually complete most of the back then. Then work the other side to the completed length at the back. You'll notice when I start with the left side I finish at the back ( about 3.33min into timer) I've pretty much got the back done, then work the right side to that shape. Try that and see how you go. I'm always conscious of leaving a bald patch too so I tend to leave a bit more length at the back just in case then take it shorter if need be. Glad you liked the vid man and keep practicing bro! Hope that helps!
Thanks man for taking time and to explain it in detail , this information has surely helped me to understand the technique better. Please do make more videos they are really educational.
Hey man, I'm not trying to make any excuses but my shop has been so busy I just haven't been able to make the time for another vid. I'm building a house also which is a huge challenge in itself. I have plans for a flat top video and am looking for a model as we speak. Hang in there brother and thanks for getting in touch, gotta go......!
What happened to the right/left handed video you were going to do. Great inspiration that made me try clipper over comb more, now I do it on every cut. Thank you
You're an inspiration boy! I'm hustling for an apprenticeship in little ol' Gore, NZ ... the struggle is real. No guards ... awesome. Can't wait to see future tutorials 👊
Hey man, I don't use detachable blades or guards at all, I was only ever taught to use clipper over comb so it's all i know. If a dude wants a 1 or a 2 all over sure but when i'm fading it's old skull all the way. Thanks for watching and glad you liked the cut!
I sub coz u hook me so bad! The skill The cut The technique The speed The precission The sound Everything was so perfect!! U r a master!!! I wish i can reach dat level. I am a new barber from philippines.
After wathcing about 100 haircutting videos on RUclips, this is by far my favorite video! I've now made it my goal to master the fade without any guards just like you! Please teach me!!
That was one of the best videos I've seen!! that was some great works. I'm just getting into Barbering I would be stoked it I was able to learn that skill!! That was a good bit off fun... Were are is your shop located? Thank for the video.... cheers
you going to do any more videos? Would you be a be able to share with me some helpful tips on how to start using the right hand, left hand technic. What to look for while applying this skill? Also fading? How would I go about fading? What are my do and don't? what is it that I'm looking for in the angle of my comb? Sorry for all the questions? But I would really like to now this skill..... I've never cut a head of hair in my like and going into Barbering school soon. Coming from a treads background ( Electrical, Carpenter ) I can see that is the skill that sets you apart from the rest. So I figured get the hard stuff over with first...... Cheers Brother.
Hey Levi, the firs thing you need to do to get good at clipper over comb is to get good at scissor over comb. Scissor over comb is an incredible skill to master and builds up the small muscles in your hands making it easier to master clipper over comb. There's a lot of small things happening all at once when doing clipper over comb man and quite difficult to put into words. I think I'll make a short step by step vid soon so you can see for yourself. Stay tuned...
The music is from a local guy inChristchurch who is a one man band. He goes by "Stomping Nick And His Blues Grenade". Just released his second album. He's on Spotify, maaasive sound for one guy!!
Fu**en Sick style! Love it! I've been cutting for almost a year and all the vids I've seen on youtube are using a clipper guard system. I almost always use clipper/scissor over comb towards the end of my cuts, but this has inspired me to go all out with clipper over comb. Thank you for the vid. Great work on the video editing/cut!
thank you very much for your youtube i would like see close up customer head because i am learning cut hair. you are so good and good at barber. thank you very much
It's a carbon fiber comb by Cricket. Normally used for combing out long hair in a hair salon. Most suppliers should have something similar. It's very thin and rigid so you can set extra close to the scalp. Hope that helps
That's a shame mate, we have 30min appointments at my shop. I prefer to take my time and treat my staff well so they can enjoy their day and their craft. We charge $50 a cut so we can afford to spend more time on our customers who really appreciate our service. !5min haircuts are fine for a while but when you've been cutting hair for 31yrs like me it's impossible and unhealthy to maintain that pace. Each to their own i guess....
Straight beast! I wanna get at your level of skill! How did you blend without creating a line with just the clipper? Like after the clipper over come..
+Alfonso Sanchez Hey man, all you do is open up the blade and scoop from the bottom up. The trick is to change the angle you hold the clipper to blend, if you want to go close keep your clipper flat to the scalp, if you want to be soft hold your clipper more towards 90 degree's from the scalp. To blend you have to subtly change your angle between the two. It takes a lot of practice and patience so take your time. Stay smooth and keep your movements fluid. Hope that helps dude
+1 timedime Hi there, yes the sides do show a heavy line. Personally I like a heavier line on an old skool look like this, it gives the sides more contrast and grows out better especially towards the 5th and 6th week after being cut. As the cut grows out it presents itself like a greaser which is great for the customer and us because the cut is still on point. Also we did shoot the vid on a higher contrast than usual so darker colours like the weight line appear slightly heavier than they are. I think it's cool, thanks for checking it out and stay tuned for our upcoming tutorial vid!
You know what? If you are right handed and practice with your left you can do this. I'm getting a feel for this. As long as you hold the clippers like a fat pencil it feels more natural and more control.
That's right you can do this. I also suggest to hold your comb with your thumb and index finger only and use the other fingers to stabilise your comb by resting those fingers on the scalp. How you hold and support your comb is equally if not more important than how you hold your clipper. It's the only thing between your clipper and your customer so its very important. Good on you for trying it out and I'm glad you're enjoying it!! Let me know if you have any questions man. Cheers
Hey Stephen, I'm just planning next video as we speak man and it will be a step by step tutorial with myself and my apprentices. It will be packed with good info so stay tuned and cheers for checking us out!
+Armando Martinez jr. Hey man, the guy with the glasses is me, haircut is a simple disconnected slick back with a tight fade. we don't use guards at all in the shop so I can't give you any numbers sorry but I'd say it would start at a half from the bottom faded up. I'm not sure what you mean about the dome? If you're asking about the music it's a local one man band, Stomping Nick & His Blues Grenade. Hope that helps and thanks for checking out the vid bro
+Armando Martinez jr. Yeah man no numbers, old school. I can't quite remember the product on the 'dome', I think it's JS Sloane Caviar Clay ( matt finish ) mixed with a bit Lightweight JS Sloane pomade.
Hey man, sorry I couldn't tell you, I've never used guards for a fade. When I got taught 30yrs ago we weren't allowed to use guards, just the way it was back then. I'd suggest using a combination of full and half sized guards then adjust your bottom blade to pick up any lines. Hope that helps and good luck bro
No mate, I'm on the other side of the world so a bit tough for me to get to the states for things like that. One day maybe but too much goin on here man. If you're going have a blast dude!
+Chris Terry yea I can imagine! I know there's a lot of people from outside of the country that Come so I was curious to know if you were. I'm stoked though for it! But yea stay busy that's not a bad problem to have !
Wow! A real barber with both hands involved! I'm lefty and I can't literally hold anything with my right hand (when I working) ha ha. Greetings from Venezuela. You've got a new subscriber here. Great job. 👏🏼👏🏼
Classic work right there - what comb are you using? Initially thought it was a regular Wahl clipper comb but it's not...any pointers would be appreciated
Hey Russ, yeah man Cricket Carbon comb, really fine teeth at one end makes it great for detailing and clipper over comb. Smooth matt finish too so not so plastic feeling, less pulling on the hair. Great comb
I've been watching this video over and over for one year now, since I started as a barber myself. I just have one wish, that you would make a step by step tutorial on your technique. But it will probably not happen, this video is already 5 years old. That's so sad. Hope you still do it though, Terry! Would make my week!
Hey man, I find the best way is to hold your comb with your thumb and index finger then use the other 3 fingers to stabilize your hand by touching the scalp with them. It takes a while to get the hang of and you'll need to move your 3 supporting fingers around until you're comfortable but once you find your own way it's all good. Hope that helps
Hey Jesse, glad you liked it! I was taught back in 87-88 to use left and right hand. It was just the way we were trained man. 2 main benefits being you are more balanced physically (less likely to get back problems later in your career) and you never stand forward of your customer and get in their personal space. Sadly a skill that isn't taught much any more. I train my apprentices this way and they smash it! Cheers
amazing, ive been a barber here in Canada for 5 years, and i already experience back and shoulder problems on the regular. Im going to start trying this to get some more balance and work the other hemisphere of the brain too. I agree, when cutting the top of the clients hair, i sometimes get in front, and i guess it does cramp their space a little bit. All great points. Good to see awesome craftsmanship. You guys in NZ have excellent training.
Good luck with switching to left hand on the left side bro, here's some tips...Keep your elbows up and even...stand with your feet at shoulder width apart...look down the teeth of the comb to keep your line straight....use the fingers that aren't holding your comb as support by placing them on the scalp....run the clippers over each section at least 3 times to catch all of the hair....take your time.... All these tips are in the video so watch it closely and all the best.
Hey man, glad you liked the vid, the comb I use is a Carbon comb by Cricket, wide teeth at one end and super fine at the other so you can get good tension during clipper overcome. Its really stiff which makes it way easier to push with the clippers. More video's to come soon, keep watching!
hi great video! Good shots of the clipper over combing. Had a question- I was wondering why you did the initial vertical sections when you went through with horizontal sections after that. Thanks!
Hey man, glad you liked the vid, the reason to cut vertical and horizontal is to cross check the line to make sure the shape is strong. I over direct vertically the extend the shape horizontally to check and remove any scissor marks. Hope that helps dude
Hey Andy, sorry mate, read your question wrong. (I thought you were asking about the top ) Regards to clipper over comb its kinda the same approach, I smash through vertically building the shape up and if needed go through horizontally to strengthen the line of the fade. As you can see in the vid its a very heavy fade, which I like, so it means I can push a bit harder to show a strong contrast. There we go, hope that helps
+Chris Terry no problem, you actually answered my question with your first response, though I am still a little confused- will the initial vertical sections around 8 minutes kind of make the shape look like an upside down V, but then when you do horizontal sections around 14 minutes, it almost seems like it's flattening out the top. Are you mainly setting the length with the first vertical pass to not go too short, then setting the shape by going horizontally? Later around 15 minutes I get that you're cross checking the horizontal sections and cutting any corners that might be there
Hey Andy, at the 8min mark I'm taking the length shorter from back to the front horizontally to keep length at the front to set the shape up. The vertical sections I connect the length from exterior guide to square up the top. I overdirect the front towards the shorter length around the crown to give me a pomp affect. How's that?
The Scissors are Fuji from Excellent Edges in AUS but I'm sure they would be available in other countries. The comb is a Cricket Carbon C30. Thanks for watching!

It takes a while to get in your groove
I agree thank you for your excellent in your expertise!! My friend.
It's great to see a true talent at work.. love your technique some barbers can't manage that type of finish with clipper guards let alone using clipper over comb. Loving your work 👍

Cool
Why did the videos stop? They're great and so unlike most barber shop vids on youtube. I was really looking forward to seeing more.
Hey man, I'm not trying to make any excuses but my shop has been so busy I just haven't been able to make the time for another vid. I'm building a house also which is a huge challenge in itself. Great music great haircut but caught the guy checking himself out in the mirror a couple of times 😆! And has every reason to!!
sick man, i use clipper over comb as a staple, but ive never seen anyone make a comb work like that. What ki d if clipper ks that?
I use Wahl Icon clippers, Cricket Carbon C30 comb for clipper over comb and C20 comb for scissor work
You're an inspiration boy!
I'm hustling for an apprenticeship in little ol' Gore, NZ ... the struggle is real. No guards ... awesome. Can't wait to see future tutorials 👊
+Kerryn Gillan Nice one bro!
Do you ever mess with detachable blade clippers? It seems like you’re not messing with the lever too much anyway. Beautiful technique man.
Hey man, I don't use detachable blades or guards at all, I was only ever taught to use clipper over comb so it's all i know. If a dude wants a 1 or a 2 all over sure but when i'm fading it's old skull all the way. Thanks for watching and glad you liked the cut!
Chris Terry very nice. I’m in school and have slowly abandoned guards because of videos like this.
Without music is much better, nothing like hearing the sound of barber tools :)

What a smart style? Good job Chris. Can you put more videos here? You are awesome. God bless you.
Anyone know what type of comb he is using?
It's a carbon fiber comb by Cricket. Normally used for combing out long hair in a hair salon. Most suppliers should have something similar. It's very thin and rigid so you can set extra close to the scalp. Hope that helps
My job we get 15 minutes to finish a cut max. And we use clipper over comb.

More videos plz, maybe some beard trims as well?
@chrisperry what style and numbers does the guy with the 👓 glasses have? I dig that style!
and what is that on the dome? 3 flowers? Johnny's?
+Armando Martinez jr. Hey man, the guy with the glasses is me, haircut is a simple disconnected slick back with a tight fade. we don't use guards at all in the shop so I can't give you any numbers sorry but I'd say it would start at a half from the bottom faded up.
I'm not sure what you mean about the dome? If you're asking about the music it's a local one man band, Stomping Nick & His Blues Grenade. Hope that helps and thanks for checking out the vid bro
+Chris Terry so no numbers huh? cool. by the dome i meant head. as in, what do you use on your hair? some type of pomade? like 3 flowers?
+Armando Martinez jr. Yeah man no numbers, old school. I can't quite remember the product on the 'dome', I think it's JS Sloane Caviar Clay ( matt finish ) mixed with a bit Lightweight JS Sloane pomade.
I am enjoying your techniques.
🌹
WOW I wish you were my barber, its perfect
realy cool master
Wow, this was amazing! Great job! Cheers from Pennsylvania, US.
Thanks man, glad you liked it!!
What's the main comb that he's using?
Clipper over comb is a Cricket Carbon C30, scissor cutting a C20
There is no way I could clipper over comb the sides like that. What guards would I use to get the sides like you just did?
Hey man, sorry I couldn't tell you, I've never used guards for a fade. When I got taught 30yrs ago we weren't allowed to use guards, just the way it was back then. I'd suggest using a combination of full and half sized guards then adjust your bottom blade to pick up any lines. Hope that helps and good luck bro
You gonna be competing at the barber Expo in Hartford, Connecticut USA?
No mate, I'm on the other side of the world so a bit tough for me to get to the states for things like that. One day maybe but too much goin on here man. If you're going have a blast dude!

@@jp3mcpherson After 2 years of your first reply, are you an ambidextrous barber by now?
Just seen that it's a cricket comb - I will have a look see...peace
Hey Russ, yeah man Cricket Carbon comb, really fine teeth at one end makes it great for detailing and clipper over comb. Smooth matt finish too so not so plastic feeling, less pulling on the hair. Great comb

I've been watching this video over and over for one year now, since I started as a barber myself. I just have one wish, that you would make a step by step tutorial on your technique. But it will probably not happen, this video is already 5 years old. That's so sad. Hope you still do it though, Terry! Would make my week!
great cut and that music rocks
Excellent job... Well done...
I always have difficulties doing clipper/scissor over comb..any tips? Anway, great job..loved the video
+Chris Terry thanks man..I appreciate it, I'll try my best
great video thank you
Awesome!!
Yeah, that was sick! I dig it! Inspirational
Thanks man, glad ya liked it! More comin soon .....
What song is this
All music on the vid is by Stomping Nick & His Blues Grenade, he's a one man band from Christchurch. He kills it !!
so rad to see you switching hands, Any reason? Or just multi dextrous :) great vid mate
All these tips are in the video so watch it closely and all the best.
pure quality mate! whats the comb you use?
Hey man, glad you liked the vid, the comb I use is a Carbon comb by Cricket, wide teeth at one end and super fine at the other so you can get good tension during clipper overcome. Its really stiff which makes it way easier to push with the clippers. More video's to come soon, keep watching!
amazing comb control :)
is the comb you are using a cricket carbon c30?
Yep sure is
great video!
Music gave me anxiety lol dope cut👍
good jod
thank you so much mate .. great cut 👌👍👍
Great video, greetings from Germany
kool video man
mando muito bem, muita técnica (y)
hi great video!
How's that?
+Chris Terry excellent thank you!
Good job,,, good thing they did not use duct tape.
Haha cheers, it was duct tape man! Hurt like a son of a bitch!
Fantastic!
great great cut man
Excellent!
Chris where can I purchase that comb and scissors?
The Scissors are Fuji from Excellent Edges in AUS but I'm sure they would be available in other
countries. The comb is a Cricket Carbon C30. Thanks for watching!
Awesome cut man! great inspiration
Thanks man, glad you liked it!
