Sampling synths to make crunchy house music chords in Eurorack with the Rossum Assimil8or

  • While preparing for a live set and making some new tunes to play I thought it would be a good opportunity to share two techniques I like to use to make chord samples with Rossum Assimil8or, a sampler in the Eurorack modular synthesizer format.
The first technique is similar to something I did in my last "rig rundown" video. I like to sample a long chord sweep, then move around the start point with CV so that every time the sample is triggered, it starts in a new place in the sample.
The second technique take inspiration from the sound of the EMU SP1200 by matching the bit depth to 12 bits, adding some aliasing, and then pitching the original sample down. This creates sounds that can be described as "crunchy". It's not really "warm", but its a sound we've come to know in love with classic house and hip hop music. I probably could have gone more extreme with this example, but I really liked the sound so I ran with it. The perks of using the Assimil8or over the SP are that the sample time is WAY more, you can dial in exactly how much of this effect you want even if that is absolutely none, and you can chose what filters you want on the outputs because EURORACK!

I really appreciate the eurorack work more than just bleeps and bloops. A few of my friends who i was in bands with back in highschool are getting into also after they saw me fooling around but all they do is drones and bleeps and bloops. I hook up a keyboard or sequencer at least.dont get me wrong the synthesis part and exploring part is fun and great but making actual music on it is where i strive to be. ❤

I know i already left a comment but woah the rossum can play multiple samples, is it on different midi channels or does it have its own sequencer? Im considering the Oxi One because it can do multiple sequences over multiple midi channels, i just hate that its outside the case!

Assimil8or is just CV and Gate in, unless you are using the new expander Locutus, which allows for MIDI control. Its 8 channels of sampling, but each channel can have 8 zones that can be accessed with CV. Locutus lets you use MIDI with it. I am working on some videos showing that now as it works a little differently than expected, at least thats what I think.
      Cheers!

Fantastic, this is what eurorack should be doing, great stuff. Can’t nod your head like that to ambient. I’m off to find that techno vid you mentioned. Keep going my friend…
