Completely refurbishing my GPZ900R Carburettors - Part 3

- Finally I’ve got all the parts I need to put the carburettors back together. In this video I try to explain what the different parts do and how to set them up. Apologies if I get anything wrong, I’m no expert! I hope you enjoy watching this and If you haven't seen the rest of my GPZ900R videos then be sure to check them out!
Most carburettor videos don't show you as much of a detailed teardown and rebuild as this one does, I'm going to replace all the screws, hoses and clips, clean out all the jets, replace the air/fuel mixture screw, remove and clean the floats and paint the bodies to make them look brand new.
I apologise that this is a 3 part video but my laptop that I use for editing just couldn't cope with the 200 individual clips from the complete stripping and rebuilding so I've had to create 3 shorter videos rather than 1 long one.
Hopefully I can get the engine started for the first time in 28 years soon.
Nice Job! I’d recommend bench testing the carbs with a fuel supply for 24 hours to ensure they don’t leak (gaskets, Orings, float needles). It’s best to discover such things before they go back on the bike.
good idea!
You did a job, I'm amazed at how much you are doing on your driveway, and it's refreshing that your wife/girlfriend pokes her head in your videos from time to time 👍👍😎👍👍
Thanks Peter! I'm greatful for the unit I've got the FZR in lol
Nice job Ash they look great.
Only thing I would advise is a dab of thread lock on the butterfly screws, don't want the engine swallowing them if they come loose.
That's actually a great idea, yea, I'll definitely do that
Just came across your channel yesterday - love watching you strip/diagnose/repair/refurbish your bikes - very enjoyable 😀
Thank you! I enjoy doing it, plenty more to come
As that tube you call the jet holder is actually the emulsion tube.. Mixes air with fuel critical off idle... You've done a nice job bty
Ah cool, yea, I was just going with what the manual described them as
So Kate clocked the mess you made when you spray painted the laminate floor in the last vid and chucked you out. Got it.
I think it was the vinegar on the freshly painted ceiling that was the breaking point...
🤣
Love the before/after pics at the end. Great job and now you know this part of the equation is solved. You can make your own carb balancing tool from standard vacuum gauges and some fuel line. I bought the vacuum gauges that are filled with kerosene so the needle bounce is dampened. Cool video!
I've got a set that I got from eBay for cheap... they work ok, not the most accurate though
Excellent video. I am rebuilding a Kawasaki ZR 550 Zephyr from 1991, and it uses the same carburetors. I cleaned them perfectly, but never thought to paint them black....
They look good in the bare aluminium to be honest
To initially synch the carbs on the bench you can use small marbles or ball bearings . Rest them on the butterflies and slowly open the throttles. Watch which ball falls first/faster and adjust accordingly.
That's a fantastic idea!
Ash, that weight thingy in the kit is the float needle valve that regulates the flow of fuel to the bottom carb bowl when the float rises/falls .. great job rebuilding the carbs budd
Thanks bud, yea I can't always remember things when I'm filming lol, I could edit everything like everyone else but then my videos wouldn't feel as natural 😃
I wonder how many hotel rooms have been used for carb restoration 😂
Excellent job I must say!!!
🤣 probably more than you'd think haha
Great job on the carbys Ash, been following this build, well done.
Thanks! Hopefully the rest of the bike will work out as nicely
Great job Ash! Nice carbs and even nicer watch!
Thanks mate, treated myself with it last year, I got it at a reduced price because it was faulty, but I got it sorted 👍
Nice looking carburetors!
Remember that using stainless screws in aluminium causes galvanic corrosion.
The screws may get stuck.
I also used stainless screws on the float bowls, I put some Never-Seez on the threads, they still come out easily 25 years later.
Thanks for the tip, great idea
That's a brand name for cooper grease. I agree, I always use copper grease on the threads of stainless machine screws.
@@leon0 ah, I was wondering lol
Excellent job doing the carbs , good spray job 👍
Thanks mate
You made an excellent job of them carbs
Thank you mate 👍
Your approach is great Ash. Somewhere between a surgeon and an artist. More power to you.
Haha thanks, that's quite a broad spectrum... some say I paid Ben Collins to pretend to be The Stig!
Very impressive. Just shows what can be achieved with relatively basic tools, time and a methodical approach.
Basic tools? I think you'll find that my hammer is very sophisticated 🤣 🤣 🤣
Nice job and great explanations along the way.
Thanks, I'm glad I did some research beforehand haha
Carb icing!! Interesting times on my suzuki bandit. Used to buy a fuel additive that stopped that.
👍
Nice job Ash, really enjoying the build. I also noticed that you take the time to respond to every comment made - Very admirable, although as your followers grow it’ll become a full time jn itself.😂
Haha well spotted... its nice to be able to do it to be honest, and I'll continue to do it as long as I can, when I get a billion subscribers it might be tricky 🤣
Quality use of a Premier Inn 😂 The carb icing thing was a huge overreaction. In COLD weather, like -5 degrees or more, after setting off the bike would occasionally just lean cut. Wait for a minute and you were off again. The solution was to allow it to warm up properly before setting off. It never got stuck at an open throttle or anything like that.
The press got hold of it and said it could cause a rear wheel lockup and accident blah blah blah. I doubt if it ever did. The fuel was thought to be a factor too, but was very different back then. We ran them on four star leaded ! Modern unleaded ethanol infested stuff probably doesn't cause icing in the same circumstances. Also, what rider now would take on these out in -5 degrees 🤪👍
That's a good point, I didn't even consider four star! Shame you can't get it any more
Nicely done, very satisfying to see a pile of parts all come back together
Just the rest of the bike now 🤣
@@AshRowland if only the workshop or drive could be as nice and comfy as the hotel room
@@essexhognose1808 Tell me about it 🤣
Fantastic job
Thanks 👍
Great job m8 they look awesome 😎👍🏻
Yea, they did, but I used the wrong kind of paint and got petrol on them so I'll have to do them again at some point 😔
Great job
👍 thanks
Top job Ash , looking forward to engine build etc.
I'm not 🤣 🤣 🤣
Really good video mate love it 😊
Thank you mate
Great job mate well worth watching can't wait to see the rest of your build cheers mate🍻🙏
You're welcome, thank you
Cracking job Mr Rowland😃
Thanks mate
What a great video - really well filmed and so helpful, thanks.
Thanks, I'm glad you found it useful
Reassembling your carbs in a hotel room, have you been kicked out of the house?😂bring on the next video!
Haha, haven't been kicked out yet!
Nice methodical work @ AR/ hopefully no leaks when reinstated
Fingers crossed!
Looks brand new 👏
Thanks!
They are looking awesome fella well done definitely
Thanks mate
Nice job ash they really do look brand new 😊
Hopefully the rest of the bike will look this good when I'm finished
I'm just glad fuel injection came along
Hahaha me too
Awesome job ash.they do look brand new nice one mate.
But will they work? lol
Very useful "how-to" you've made there Ash, good job. I've got this job to do at some point on my GPZ, it's been a while since I've played with a bike that had carbs but I grew up with carb engines with clockwork ignition, I'm just out of practice :-)
It's quite therapeutic really
Evening Ash that’s very impressive mate, but I did tell you to clean the floor properly didn’t I 😊 lol
🤣
Good job,I've built many carb sets, they look the Bizz..I normally set air fuels to 3 turns out as a base setting..👍
👍
That's really model dependent. Ash could get a gunsons colour tune to set then properly, with the engine warmed up. No O2 sensors or OBD2 connectors on bikes of this vintage.
Cracking job on those carbs Ash, just one little thing, did you apply any "Thread lock" on the tiny screws holding the butterflies in place?
That's actually a great idea, yea, I'll definitely do that
Butterfly screws Thread locked !!
👍
Thats very pretty mate, good job!
Haha thanks mate
great job ash , they look amazin
Thank you!
the holeses in the precious lets the fuel into the engineses 😉
🤣
Looks good! 👍
Looks good, but will they work? 🤣
Nice work you must be very pleased with how they've turn out, echo the comment about bench testing
👍
I do not know if anyone has said this ,but flat washer spring washer then bolt ,spring washer stops bolt undoing,.
👍
Great video thanks, going to strip my carbs soon, can you tell me what size o rings you needed?
This information is nearly impossible to find out haha...
I measured them at 6.0 x 1.5mm and 4.5 x 1.5mm
Really nice job there Ash. Can you give a figure on what it cost to do this job ?
Thanks! I reckon with the hose, clips, screws, carb cleaner and other materials probably about £100 ish, but I've got plenty left to do it about 5 more times! The rebuild kits were only about £10 each
Gotta ask why did you spray them ? As ive found any paint on carbs turns to a gooey mess when you introduce carb cleaner.
To make them look nice... I'm not planning on spraying carb cleaner on the outside of them again
Wow id like this done to my cb750 carbs .where is best to have these done in cardiff area .
I have no idea, this took me days, and I used the wrong paint so I have to do it all again 🤣
Well done, where did you get fuel lines from
GSF autoparts in Cardiff
Top job. You make it look a total doddle 😂
26 minutes of video is about 12 hours of work 🤣
But you do appear to have a high level of expertise. This isn't happening just with the aid of a Haynes Manual, surely? What's your current best guess to get it completed?
Stripping, cleaning and rebuilding carbs is quiet easy. I'm like Ash I do my own and learnt from a haynes manual as long as your organised and label bits it's like lego. First time was daunting but I've done them on a kawasaki zx9r, triumph trident 900, suzuki sv650, honda vfr400, suzuki gs 650. With a haynes, youtube and elbow grease you can do most jobs in a bike at home or in a hotel room if you choose.
I've been taking things apart for as long as I remember... My current best guess would hopefully be in time to catch the end of summer
👍 👍 👍
This is a journey, surely, not a race. If it was just about getting it on the road, you wouldn't be doing such a thorough job. You'd just fixing the major broken bits and chanting "rebuilding... rebuilding..." whilst covering everything with rattle can black like VGG. You, on the contrary, are doing the job with real care and system. It's great.
@@leon0 thanks Leon, means a lot
Ash were are you??😂
Tonight 4pm, I promise 🤣
@@AshRowland I'll be waiting with a cuppa and a star bar😂🤣
