For the past two years, the strawberries we had grown in one of our more shaded gardens had struggled. While we had initially seen good harvests, the size of the strawberries diminished, and the plants themselves looked less than healthy.
After a good deal of work ammending and fertilizing the soil, we still did not have the results we wanted, and so we decided to change our methods and shift to vertical gardening.
The GreenStalk Vertical Garden that we are growing is the GreenStalk Leaf Vertical Garden. This vertical garden has 7 tiers, and each tier is 7" in depth. In each of these tiers, there are 6 pockets to grow in. That means we have 42 pockets of strawberries, and in each of these pockets, we have two plants.
So, in one vertical garden setup, we have 84 strawberry plants, and the results are fantastic! The plants that were initially struggling and not producing are now filled with flowers and fruits.
This vertical garden has made a huge difference for us. We encourage you to take a look to see if this is the perfect vertical gardening system for you!
Thanks for watching.

This looks awesome. I wonder what would be the best way to tie it into my existing drip system?
Do you have to refresh the soil regularly? If so, how do you handle that?
Definitely a fan of vertical gardening!
Green Stalk is amazing for strawberries!! 🍓
Absolutely great for them!
Excellent video, thank you.
What was your total yield for strawberries put of the greenstalk after 1 season?
Very instructional.
Thank you Remedios. Do you have a garden?
I must try this in the Spring time.
We went from having 2 to 4 planters in the space of a few months. I doubt we will stop at 4! Let us know how if you have any questions.
Very nice indeed.
Thank you!
Do you need to amend the soil after the winter 🤔🙏😊
Thanks
You are welcome!
What types of ever bearing strawberry plants might any of you recommend?! So many out there! Just want the easiest, most strawberry prolific!
I bought the original style but just ordered the leaf. Do you feel restricted by the leaf with only 7 inches in depth? Did you feel that having 2 plants per pocket was crowding the plants too much.
Can you keep your strawberry plants , undisturbed in the Greenstalk throughout the winter? Any tips??
Any tips for indoors
Iowa Gardener here 👋 just curious if you are covering the strawberry plants up in the winter.
Hello from NYC , question, how do I keep my tower from getting blown over with the strong wind ? ❤️🐾🐾. How can I anchor the tower ?
How do you fertilize?
I would really love to own 1 unfortunately they don't ship to Australia
I would like to know how you winterize your strawberry plants in the Greenstalk. Thanks you
Hello! Thank you for the great question. We are working on some content around that coming up in the near future, so please stay tuned. :)
Nice...
Thank you! Cheers! Do you have a garden?
@@GutenGardening Yeah. My pleasure, You can checkout my RUclips channel n pls don't forget to like n subscribe.
This may be a dumb question but, because of the height, do you know the greenstalk to ever be blown over in a storm? Will the strawberries winter over okay in this setup or do you have to winter prep it some how? I have strawberry roots to plant out but I'm struggling with the idea of going vertical or planting them in a raised bed area. I'm in zone 7a. Thanks to anyone who answers my questions!
My strawberries in the green stalk were at 10 degrees for like 2-3 days and they look okay. Won’t know for sure til spring but they haven’t even lost all their green
Sorry if I missed this: What variety of strawberry are you growing? And aren't you overcrowding the plants?
We have a mix of strawberries (most of them are June bearing), but to be honest I don't know the exact varieties since they have been with us in other places for several years and I have pulled these from all over. In terms of overcrowding, we did go a little heavy on the planting (heavier than we would have in ground) to see how well the GreenStalk would handle it. We may need to thin in the future, but time will tell for sure. :)
I plan to grow strawberries in one of my GreanStalks as well. In fact, it's about time to get seeds in the ground so I can start getting berries in Nov or Dec down here.
In November and December, I will settle for dreaming of them, unless we grow some indoors this year. :D I can't wait to see yours growing!
i noticed you don't have the spinner, do you think the north facing ones do ok?
Great question. We actually now do have the spinner for the ones we are growing inside because we think there is some value for that for sure. As of now though, everything seems to be doing well on all sides.
Nice video...any issues with birds eating your strawberries?
We have so many other berries that they seem to enjoy even more. :D :D More than birds, we have issues with rabbits trying to get at them, which is one of the reasons we really like the vertical garden. So far, fingers crossed, we have mostly been left alone.
If growing them inside in winter what can you grow in them without sun light.
When growing inside you will need grow lights. Several winters ago we were able to successfully grow strawberries indoors and produce edible fruits. Unfortunately we had a huge infestation of aphids that eventual ruin the plants. If we attempt growing strawberries again we will be better prepared. Have you seen any of our indoor garden setup video? We usually transition to indoor gardening in Late Fall.
What soil did you use for your strawberries
We do top some of our peppers. :) It has made a difference. For the eggplant, we often steam it or my favorite is this:

Please tell me how I can protect my strawberries from birds?
Thank you 😊
Fine mesh netting
What about birds
The leaves are edible too.
I have read this, but I have never tried them. How do they taste?
@@GutenGardening To me they just taste green. I either dehydrate them and add them to my green powder, add fresh to fruit smoothies, or sauté with other weeds in garlic butter. I saw a video, I think by Rain Country Homestead, about this a year or so ago. I don’t grow strawberries yet, but I have lots of wild ones in my yard, the kind where the berries are too tiny to bother with but I do harvest leaves.
New friend onboard. Subscribe to your channel. It's really amazing video. Keep posting. Stay connected 🙏
Thanks and welcome!
Lol put some garlic in bottom leve now rabbits leaving it alone
Wouldn't squirrels and deer be able to get at the fruit?
We are fortunate that we don't have to deal with Deer, but we do have some squirrels but haven't had many problems with them. That being said, I would think that if I lived where they were a major problem, I would definitely need to work on a fencing system.
I always have bird issues that need to be dealt with.🥴
We are going with some tulle or bird netting this year to help with that. :)
They're so expensive 😩
They are definitely not cheap, but I think there are a couple of reasons for the cost. One is that you don’t have to bring them inside for the winter, and do is the water dispersal system. We have used a few other stackable planters, and there is a definite quality and durability difference. :)
They are! But they go on sale from the to time. One is going on now, for Valentine's.
how you refreshn the dirt?
