      Right? I'd think that after news of the tragedy that happened in SAO spread all over the world, no one would want anything to do with it. And really, look at the track record: 10,000 are trapped and 4,000 die in SAO. 300 get trapped in ALO. Then in GGO during a battle royale you can't logout out (not sure if this applies only to participants or everyone) which means you're trapped until it's over. Also, ALO and GGO punish players who logout with that whole, being able to steal off of the soul less body you leave behind thing that shouldn't be a thing.

    • @timlee5711
      @timlee5711 7 лет назад +19

      Thats what actually happened. The reason why the machines could steal their memories was through putting them in traumatic experiences that triggers their past memories of their experiences in SAO, which the machine can identify and scan it away. Except, you know this guy probably didn't even bother to understand what is happening in the film.

    • @CogniVision
      @CogniVision 7 лет назад +59

      Haneoto Tsukiya All you did was just explain how the machine scans their memories. I haven't seen any example of them actually havin a PTSD reaction from any memories. They all look pretty damn happy fighting those enemies. So basically, it's just more bad writing. "By having fun with our game, they will remember past experiences, and we will scan those and steal their memory!"
      Just scanning the memory isn't enough, it has to STEAL the memory. Because after creating some magical tech that scans people's memories, adding in a copy-paste shortcut is just too much damn work. We'll make a cut-paste shortcut instead. Poor writing for forced drama.

    • @CogniVision
      @CogniVision 7 лет назад +53

      That's not how psychology works little kid. A bunch of first-world kids, teens, and adults play an MMO. They get trapped in a violent world against their will, and not only have to fear death from monsters and some overpowered enemy in a dungeon, but also from other players who were psychopaths and are using the world as a way to fulfill their sadistic desire for hurting and killing others.
      Then after being used to living in this 'environment' of constant fear and distrust of others, you wake up and are back in reality which is drastically different than what you've been experiencing. Your body is weak from atrophy, your behind in your years and the government throws you into a rehab program with other players from the game. For all you know some of those people sitting with you in that classroom are from the same murderous guilds that tried to kill you and your friends.
      People who have been in maximum security prison for years already have a hard enough time readjusting to the world. SAO was also a prison, a prison with no guards; a prison that tried to kill you every step of the way through. And so far it seems not a single player from SAO gives any shits. They immediately go and play another game based off of SAO right out of SAO. The very next season of SAO was about another murderous SAO member, not being broken and coming to terms with the fact that they now have to face the reality of their crimes and look at people whose friends they may have killed in the face, but are like "hey man, killing wasn't so bad. Let's do some more of it in this other game!"
      And now we have this movie... and the only one who seems to be devastated about the events of the tragedy that was SAO, is not even a person who played the game. It's the father of someone who played the game.
      I mean. Kirito basically watched his first love and his entire guild die, all his fault for hiding his true power, and he wasn't broken up about that for long! Where are the parents screaming at the other players wondering where their child is? For all they know, their child's killer could be one of those other kids that woke up. SAO ignores all the emotional aspects that could make it a worthwhile show. Instead the only people who seem to have emotion in SAO are the villains.

      Or better yet, even if you accept the villain's shitty premise (which is actually Kawahara's shitty premise), he would have to realize that some of those thousands of people who died in SAO would have met Yuuna, and he'll never get their memories. So no matter how hard he tries, even if he succeeded at the stadium, he wouldn't have achieved his goal. Wait, is ordinal scale built into the system? Or is it downloadable software? Because not all people are gamers, not all gamers would download this game. So it devolves to a couple hundred/thousand(?) people running around swinging fake swords. But I didn't see a single bystander from the perspective of the game world. All of the background characters are in fantasy attire. So this means that the AR tech just ignores the existence of people that aren't playing the game. Meaning that it is highly likely that players will just crash into the millions of normal people and/or cars in the world since there is no game rendered version of them.
      And if I'm wrong and the game is bloatware, then why the hell are there so few people? I'm 99% sure that Akihabara is not gonna see only 9 people on any given street, that's completely impossible.

      Was it Mother'sBasement who said that first? I can't remember, but that wasn't *really* my point. :p I feel like SAO missed an obvious way out of that while still allowing for smaller player server things: created different fucking servers and then say you have a million players worldwide, all on a few thousand different servers. Kirito would be on a server with roughly 10,000 players. That's one plot hole fixed.

      because most people dont read too much into media, which frankly would make most if not all of it unenjoyable. They either dont want to or simply cant/don't want to invest so much time and energy into overanalizing an series/movie. You can take ANY series, movie, book or any other type of media apart the exact same way, since most of them arent meant to be hyperrealistic or even logical all the time. Sure, one thing that came to my mind pretty early in the movie was that the fight scenes are certainly a bit over the top considering this is supposed to be reallife in an AR enviorment, but this didnt take me out of it completly.
      Hollywood movies in particular are very bad at any kind of logic or realism, like Star Wars for example which arguably is one of the most loved franchises out there even tho they have MASSIVE plot holes and inconsistancies in every single movie, even if they try to somehow cover them up by trying to come up with an justification/explaination in spin-off movies or even (canon) videogames. (Main) Star Wars movies always follow the same formular aswell and yet the majority of people still likes them. If you really boil it down to its essence SW8 has an much shallower plot than SOA (let it be the series or movies) has and still the majority of people likes it. Not to imply that it is an bad movie, unless you start putting to much energy into analizing it and overthink it of course. In the end all movies are just special effects fireworks that somehow need to fill 90-150 minutes of screentime.

      this isn't supposed to be like 5000 years in the future and if it was someone's kid and getting them back they would do it any day, when you look threw memories their deep in the brain (that's why you only hear of old people losing memory because their body is weaker) and it would take years, decades, and maybe even centuries to learn how to do it safely. this isn't like a puzzle where you can take apart and fix the picture it would take taking it out safely (which would probably be a very slow process taking into account their Tec) and putting it back which would be more dangerous because if its misplaced it can deal major brain damage if its put into some important nerves (feel hungry, pain etc.) and if you put it in the middle of an important part of their life then their personality itself could change because events in life change people.

    Idea for making it a tad more interesting:
    Yuna is already at 95% sync. The creator has been data mining people's memories for months. The memory stealing is just copying data, not taking it out of people's brains, so no one really notices. But the last memory he needs is the memory of her death, that moment of terror that really defines a person.
    He knows she was killed by a player character and he has yet to find that person, so it's a revenge thing as well. And he's a player in the game as well.

      If you really think about it, this Augma would NEVER work even on a conceptual level.
      It was shown that a parked car turned into part of the environment. What happens to the cars that are moving?
      What about what happens to moving cars? What about pedestrians?
      It can't be that non-players disappear. What if the players, who wouldn't see them, bump into them?
      Moreover, doesn't it seem possible that the visual interference is, I don't know, totally dangerous? In real life VR, we've already seen people bump into shit when they get too immersed.
      So many questions, and any answers can only be provided by second-guessing on the intent of the writer.

Even if someone discovered all your points against Konosuba were wrong and showed you in a manner you could understand (not saying your points are wrong, but they could be)?
      Then why doesn't MB take your position and ignore you? Why write reviews/analysis at all if it doesn't aim to inform you of an idea or concept you didn't think about or care about in the first place?
      It's fine to hate something for reasons that makes sense to you. Yet ignoring other people's stances on the basis of an unfounded negative biase is close-minded and ignorant.

    The biggest problem with all of SAO, or rather everything Kawahara writes, is that he doesn't know MMOs, technology, or how video games work. He comes up with pretty interesting concepts, but quickly writes himself into a corner and just pulls BS out of the air to make everything somehow fit well enough to publish. I've always given his work some leeway since SAO was mostly self-published, so he lacked the benefit of an editor to tell him when his ideas were terrible, but from what I've seen of Accel World (just the anime), it doesn't look like he's improved by much.
    I look upon his works as primarily nerd-fulfillment, video game nerd gets a harem, and the rest of the setting and plot as just a means to that end.
    30:56 Sugu in her underwear, "more marketable."

    • @sdmblack1
      @sdmblack1 7 лет назад +6

      Gaudy6523 Accel World is much better as a book, but the anime still does decently. Honestly, I love it, even with its faults. One thing I love is that it gives the main character one special power, and the chapter after that elaborates how that power actually makes him worse in many ways.
      He can't just outspeed a bullet, he tries that and fails every time, he has to actually learn how to read tells in combat to even have a chance, and he's only shown doing it maybe twice. And even with his wings, mobility is all he has going for him: every party member is better than him, and his girlfriend is one of the top 8 players ever. Even IRL, he's not shown as attractive, the best he usually gets is being called "cute", which adds onto his feelings of emasculation.
      Chrome Disaster and Lime Bell are pretty good sources of asspulls, but even then they bring up some interesting ideas for the characters to get around.

    • @sdmblack1
      @sdmblack1 7 лет назад +5

      overall, I'd see Haru as a better way to use Kirito. Where Kirito is the best and the sexiest at everything, Haru is shown as shirt, fat, and not even overly smart. All he has is his video games, and then he loses that too. Kirito has a unique skill noone else has and it only ever makes him better and stronger just from having it, Haru gets the ability to fly, and he gets a brief burst of fame from being the first, but whenever he fights someone with a gun (which is often) he is just a floating target. He can't even use it all the time, as it uses his energy meter, meaning he is by default just an underpowered melee fighter.
      He even has fewer harem members, with Niko seeing him more as a genuine older brother, and the only two official members being Kuroyuki and Chiyo (being Taku is suffering). The stakes arent as overly dramatic either, the worst that can happen as a direct result of the game is a loss of access to the game. Everything else is a result of metagaming, like with Sky Raker.

    • @marthia8015
      @marthia8015 7 лет назад +9

      For me, the problem is less that he doesn't understand the technology and culture he uses for his stories, it's more that he can't keep his rules straight within his own universe. I didn't realize this while watching SAO, but when I tried to watch Accel World a while later, I stopped after 10-12 episodes (I think) because I was just getting annoyed and bored by the constant exposition dumps. Almost every episode dropped new plot exposition that works conveniently to make the plot move into the direction Kawahara wants it to. It's pretty clear that he didn't think of any of this beforehand or planned the details for his story, he just makes rules up on the stop to make the story move along. Everything I know about Gun Gale comes from second hand sources in reviews, riffing sessions and such, but that's enough to confirm my suspicion that he didn't think anything trough and just made up new rules every few seconds ("you can't hide from the satellite scan!! It's supposed to prevent camping!!" - "oh, unless you're underwater or in a cave, then you're totally hidden.")

      That was already addressed at the end of the first season of SAO, where he goes through physical therapy. Considering he also gives Suguha, someone who never stopped practicing, some trouble using one-handed Nito-Ryu(that shit’s difficult as fuck, believe me), his lack of fitness in OS makes no godamn sense. If anything, the fact that he’s the ONLY ONE in the main cast that has any background in any kind of martial art or sport while everyone else also had the same muscle atrophy problems as he did should make him uniquely suited to athletic displays in AR play. But trust Reki to forget his own protagonist’s backstory to contrive a cheap “weakness” that he then somehow completely solves by playing solo for all of a couple of days(as if it’s possible to actually develop any notable muscle mass or reflexes in that amount of time).

      @Belkak021 6 лет назад +28

      If you wish to know how she died. Taken from the wiki, spoilers obviously.
      She was killed in battle in a field dungeon on the 40th Floor of Aincrad by a group of tormentor-class minions of the Feral Warder Chief that she had drawn to herself to protect her party from being annihilated. And the reason why she was there was to help someone that was trapped in a field dungeon or something.

      Rémi Clinquart
      maybe she was ambushed between towns? I mean, it's reasonable to assume that she was alone when she died. Or maybe someone murdered her. Possibilities are endless in a death game where we never got to see this character. Of course, there's also always the possibility that she did fight, and we just don't get to see it. Who knows though? Maybe the dad tried to take her helmet off and killed her instantly?

    Yuuki's ghost didn't appear. We just see Asuna using Mother's Rosario (Yuuki's personal skill she gave onto Asuna when she died) and then Asuna's Avatar turns into Yuuki's Avatar to show Asuna is attacking with Yuuki's indirect help, because she inherited the skill from Yuuki. It's not like Yuuki just appeared out of nowhere fighting the boss individually. Therefore, it's just service to all Yuuki fans, but no ghosts were shown.

    • @Woot831
      @Woot831 7 лет назад +58

      Because people don't understand how Rotten Tomatoes works.
      Rotten Tomatoes tells you how _many_ people thought a movie was worth their time. So if a movie has an 80%, for example, it _doesn't_ mean it has a score of 8/10, it means that 80% of the people who rated it rated it worth watching.
      So how Ordinal Scale could achieve a 95% is actually pretty easy; who else but SAO fans are most likely going to watch it? And if you're already a fan of SAO, or are simply watching the film with the mindset of "I'm just gonna turn my brain off and watch for pretty lights", you're pretty likely to find at least something in it that you consider worthwhile.
      Does that make Ordinal Scale a good movie? Not in the slightest. But as the Pedantic Romantic observed, fans don't care about SAO's flaws; if it can hook them, they'll come along for the ride.

    When I watched the film, I loved the fight scenes. The animation was very enjoyable, but I do admit it was eye candy to fill time, as anything between the fights felt relatively sluggish. What made the experience very enjoyable was paying close attention to details that I thought would be discussed here, and I was not disappointed. My gripes and then some were covered.
    But here's an additional one that wasn't covered. We know that Eiji was using some kind of tech to increase his physical prowess and reflexes. But when Kirito LITERALLY RIPS IT OUT OF HIS NECK, how was there not more damage? It seemed like he was only exhausted from that action (after the initial pain), but how was he not subjected to more serious physical symptoms? It had to be connected to his body more intricately than just intercepting and replicating stimulus signals to the brain.

      Well, to be fair, playtime doesn't mean shit. Take League of Legends as an example. There are people with 1000s of hours played who are in bronze. (Or at least below Diamond), while actually talented people jump to Plat-Diamond within a week or two of playing. Talent is just much, much more important.
      It's also been established that much of Kirito's skill comes from his superior ability to analyze, understand and exploit game mechanics, as in him using skill-connect in ALO or being able to shatter oppenent's weapons in SAO. Add his incredible reflexes, which is a defining character trait he possesses and not even unrealistic, and you get a gamer who comes across as OP because he is able to pick things up faster end execute them correctly more easily than average gamers.
      As for his skill in Ordinal Scale... he knows the motions of wielding a sword from SAO and ALO, he just isn't very motivated to actually tryhard in a game he doesn't care about at the start. When he starts trying because there is something on the line for him, he becomes more focused and actually gets good. I agree that him being physically fit enough to keep up with Eiji all of a sudden is unnecessary, but I would be inclined to assume a timeskip of about a month where he kills the SAO bosses and trains almost daily in the kendo-dojo. That could get him at least fit enough to last through a 10 min battle and be physically strong and quick enough to be effective.

    The Augmas are an accessory. If at any point you think you're about to have your memory stolen, you can just take you Augma off. Problem solved. In fact I'm surprised more people don't so it when they lose against a tough boss. They do know what rage-quitting is right? Also, I noticed that when you play Ordinal Scale you can't see the real world anymore, just the AR laid on top of it. Wouldn't that be incredibly dangerous. You could walk into the street and get hit by a car you couldn't see. Lastly, when I say you can't see the real world, that goes for people to. Picture the scene. Kirito vs main bad guy player. Kirito can immediately take his Augma off and become invisible to him, while main bad guy's real body is slashing at the AR air like an idiot.

      artistafrustrado I'm guessing it was either marketing,
      or the waifu tities. The show itself is crap sure,
      but quite a few of the characters look good.
      the softcore porn fanart was the best part of SAO XD .

      Log Horizon and SAO are like fruits and candys
      fruits (LH) are healthy and delicios... but seem boring and no one make marketing on them
      candys (SAO) are colorfull, come in bright colorful paper and companys spend millions of dolars in propaganda of how "cool" they are... it will give you decay, but childrens don´t care about that

      People sometimes see the entertainment, art and music as a more important factor. If a movie is fun enough to be watched by a person, the. That person most likely overlooked the flaws, or can take it and understands that there are different factors to personal enjoyment. When you can't overlook the flaws, that's when personal enjoyment begins to decrease, which is why people hate on Sword Art Online. It's understandable, but personally, I prefer that you look at this with a more neutral view, instead of making it look like liking Sword Art Online is stupid. At least that's how more and more people think of Sword Art Online. I just don't like the fact that you bash on Sword Art Online when there's worse anime bash on, even if you think Sword Art Online got the popularity it did not deserve.

      Viggo Chai
      "Bashing" SAO *IS* the neutral view. SAO is extremely flawed as a show and by industry standards, it's objectively below average.
      What you're saying is that you prefer to ignore the flaws because you find it fun. That's not a neutral view, it's biased in favor of what you find fun.

    • @chai4576
      @chai4576 7 лет назад +5

      E E That is neutral, because art, animation and music plays an important factor. I understand that SAO has a very flawed story, but only bashing about that is NOT a neutral view. You have to point out both sides, that's a neutral argument. Otherwise, you are just biased and unprofessional. And in my last comment I was just trying to say that people often ignore why people actually the pros of SAO. And I did not say that it was wrong to bash on SAO. I said it was okay to do that, but not disrespectfully and unbiasedly. Hope you get my point

    While I agree with nearly everything you said, but the whole Yukki "ghost" thing is because Asuna used the move she got from Yukki before Yukki died. It was a memory ghost, not a real one. Common trope with those things.
    Also, it is mentioned that the drones "Wirelessly transmit extra power" during memory scans and that having so many in one place is what will make the scan lethal. Still kind of dumb, but they do mentioned it.

    There's a few strange things you didn't get to.
    One, what does Kirito, or anyone else that doesn't play for that matter, see when others are playing?
    If they are acting irl to fight virtual monsters, then from the POV of a non-player, they must be swinging at air.
    Also, since the swords only exist virtually, there wouldn't be any resistance from swords clashing, which would probably have your real hands swing past your own virtual sword. The lack of a tactile feedback would be disorienting.
    Two, in a clip of the movie you show, the virtual world overlays a pile of RPG barrels onto a car parked on the street.
    What happens when the owner of that car in the real world gets into that car and drives away? Does the game player see someone clip through barrels and they move without animation? What about the other cars in the street?
    This brings up 3. Clearly, because we see traffic and people doing ordinary things outside the game, how does this AR gameplay not completely get in the way of normal life? Even with Pokemon GO, people did stupid things like walk into active traffic, crowd up places, and otherwise annoy real people because they were lost in their virtual pets. Pokemon GO isn't anywhere near the level of augmented reality that this game supposedly is. How is normal, everyday life in Japan not so overly obstructed by this videogame that's as popular as a smartphone? People are still working, shopping, driving, and other regular things humans do to survive city living. You'd think an AR game like this would be so disruptive to society, it would be outlawed. At least in the origial SAO game, players are at home playing in their sleep, not disrupting society. They are playing this AR game no different than the virtual game, even though you're interacting with real objects and people doing their shopping. The game this movie depicts would clash so badly with regular life, it would be an absolute menace. You mentioned that one scene was an overlap of Akihabara, but there's no way such a crowded mecha of shopping and business, that still needs to operate normal business btw, could handle crowds of game players fighting in the middle of the road and sidewalks.
    Even if you remove the memory wiping, or people making videogame moves while playing an AR game, there's no way this city at minimum, or all of Japan itself, wouldn't outlaw this game or at least restrain it to game playing centers.
    Not everyone plays this game, or even if everyone does, they still need to log off once in a while to live real life.

      I'm just personally curious why Kirito just didn't bring a baseball bat (or wooden sword that he uses in training) with him to that fight. Even if the headset is proding "faux feedback" when they use their virtual swords, Kirito would have an edge when the villain realizes he's still being injured by a physical object.

    • @MysticJhn
      @MysticJhn 7 лет назад

      @Redskingman Maybe, but Yu-Gi-Oh beyond the first series is just an infomercial these days, selling cards. 5Ds tried to be an actual anime, but mostly the YGO anime are there to just sell cards, story be damned. On the other hand, SAO is supposed to be an actual story where writing matters. They aren't selling these AR devices.

      I enjoyed sao but wouldn't go as far as to directly protect it like it is the best( it is average to me . Has good concepts but just suck at execution). One thing I have to say is that it is getting really freaking hard to defend or even much less say it has some enjoy ment in it, the more the story goes on.
