Many religions including Christianity, Judaism, and Buddhism contain the idea of freedom through virtue. It is especially well articulated in Buddhism. Liberalism permits people to dynamically make improvements on knowledge and society, but it goes astray when it abandons notions of virtue or actively tries to disrupt traditional morality without reason. It is prone to hubris but can do a lot of good when applied well. Its not a matter of either or but putting things in their proper place.
