First Time Painting with Gouache | Portrait Practice

- Watch my painting process start to finish using gouache for the first time! I'm painting a portrait with acrylic gouache during this extremely chatty and somewhat chaotic paint with me session. This video is about trusting the process, trying new mediums, and getting out of your comfort zone with art. I loved the way this piece turned out although it was looking rough for most of the process. The full painting took me about 4-5 hours to complete.
The majority of the painting is with acrylic gouache but I didn't have a white acrylic gouache, so the white I used is a traditional gouache. My biggest regret is using watercolor paper instead of a gessoed board (watch to see why).

Materials Used:
- Acryla Acrylic Gouache
- Holbein Artists' Gouache (traditional gouache)
- A variety of brushes in different sizes (mostly flat brushes)
- Canson Watercolor Paper - 9x12" XL Pad - 140 lb paper
- Water

What is washi tape? What other uses does it have in painting like this?
Washi tape is a decorative masking tape! It’s great for journals, cards, artwork, and other misc projects. In can be used like painters tape to block out areas and make straight lines but it’s typically less wide than painters tape.
I like to use it in my artwork for the borders to get smooth edges on the piece. And I love using it in my journals for outlines, taping items in, and decoration!
