Hostel operators, have year after year, taken advantage of the vulnerability of students. They charge exhorbitantly and increase prices year after year. Many rooms have prepaid electricity meters. Students pay! Many have boreholes. They are not on meters. Electricity and water are taken care of. If they provide Gas, they fill once and if you finish it, you fill it for the rest of the semester. They don't even paint! So what is all the money for? it is just milking the cow dry! It us unfair. Talking of proximity mpo, so the poor person should go far, cos they can't pay? I concur with what sheldon is saying. In fact if you come to KNUST the Brunei hostels are charging above 8000 for 1v2 room but your flush toilet will be dysfunctional for about a whole semester. I have lived there for four years and can tell you for a fact there is no exceptional services or utilities for residences. Complex, the largest Gusss hostel on campus do not even have a study room and power plant but all the traditional halls have power plants.
Actually Pent is a private hostel and their contract with the University is about to end hence they are charging outrageous prices to make enough profit before the contract ends. Also Sheldon is right, there’s an in out system now in the University of Ghana so after staying for an academic year you’ll be sacked out

This means that if 300 students got a bed, the remaining 1200 did not. Kwapong is inviting Sarkodie to perform for their hall week, while Limann has invited Stonebwoy. What Scanty is talking about doesn’t make much sense. Interestingly, after Pent increased their prices, every other hostel on campus did the same. So, this isn’t just about Pent, but also other hostels like Bani, Evandy, and TF. Moreover, the rooms at Pent are in deplorable condition.

Right now, when you're done with level 100, you're asked to move out from the traditional halls. You'll only pay an extension to stay due to the facts that the undergraduate s are not in yet. But still, you'll be asked to look for a hostel.

The prices of hostel fees have increased by 122.4% in just 2 years however the inflation rate in Ghana for the same period has decreased from an average figure of 31.9% to 25.8%. It doesn’t make sense, we especially at the northern part of campus are charged with outrageous amounts. The managements know we don't have any option therefore we will pay. We don't have wifi, a poor water system and we pay for our electricity bills.

Pent is a Private hostel The reason why there’s an increase always is because UG has leased the land to them and they have to pay levies every year. They review the lease fees every year so this year after the review lease prices have been increaseddddd putting pressure on the Ghana hostel limited to increase prices. The increment from UG lease fees makes it impossible for the school authorities not to intervene. Also, Commonwealth is a 4 year stay unlike KNUST, the reason why people where moved form CW was because of the violence. Diaspora, traditional halls are all 4 years stay no stress unless you want to move out Mostly it’s the school authorities that makes these prices increase
Government allocation 16 million dollars for the diaspora renovations during the African games. If you see the state of some of the rooms in diaspora er😂. Some chairman has stepped on the money 😅

I think what Scanty is saying makes sense but it is because Sheldon's side is populist most are jumping on it. The rate of increment is commensurate with the high standard of living currently being faced in the country. Hostels charge a flat rate as fees and once paid, the student may consume as much electricity, water and other amenities which have to be borne by the Hostel operator. It becomes difficult to realistically project how much has to be spent on these and without regular increments, these same hostels will be rundown due to lack of funds to maintain them. I am sure Sheldon will have a field day discussing that when it happens. 🤣Again, as Scanty said, it is a free market economy that is run in Ghana. Sheldon, there is no room for price control or price ceiling as you are suggesting. Mind you, there are less expensive hostels and in every free market economy you will find products and services that are priced as premium not because they are functionally better than others but because they are considered prestige items by consumers. Pent Hostel has always held that space as a prestige Hostel, even when I was in the university between '04 to '08. I think all economies need their Ivy leagues, Premium products and Prestige items. If I cannot afford it, there is always that one thing called CHOICE. Use it.

Hmm, my homestel I paid GHC4000.00 this semester I will pay 7000.00. It looks like all the hostel and homestel are now over GHC6000.00 for two in a room at University Mines and Technology. I can relate very well😢😢

Let's also not forget that these hostel pay taxes. Just as property rates, your property rate will depend on your facility. Pent will pay higher than any other hostel on campus. There are so many factors that comes to play

Pent is just an overhyped Akuafo inner room...Also, @Scanty, University of Ghana is now running the in-out-out-out system for the traditional halls, this means that students in level 200 to 400 are forced to go for the hostels and are forced to pay these exorbitant sums of money just to occupy a room for a year

Pent is a Private hostel
The reason why there’s an increase always is because UG has leased the land to them and they have to pay levies every year. They review the lease fees every year so this year after the review lease prices have been increaseddddd putting pressure on the Ghana hostel limited to increase prices. The increment from UG lease fees makes it impossible for the school authorities not to intervene.
Also, Commonwealth is a 4 year stay unlike KNUST, the reason why people where moved form CW was because of the violence.
Diaspora, traditional halls are all 4 years stay no stress unless you want to move out

I think what Scanty is saying makes sense but it is because Sheldon's side is populist most are jumping on it. The rate of increment is commensurate with the high standard of living currently being faced in the country. Hostels charge a flat rate as fees and once paid, the student may consume as much electricity, water and other amenities which have to be borne by the Hostel operator. It becomes difficult to realistically project how much has to be spent on these and without regular increments, these same hostels will be rundown due to lack of funds to maintain them. I am sure Sheldon will have a field day discussing that when it happens. 🤣Again, as Scanty said, it is a free market economy that is run in Ghana. Sheldon, there is no room for price control or price ceiling as you are suggesting. Mind you, there are less expensive hostels and in every free market economy you will find products and services that are priced as premium not because they are functionally better than others but because they are considered prestige items by consumers. Pent Hostel has always held that space as a prestige Hostel, even when I was in the university between '04 to '08. I think all economies need their Ivy leagues, Premium products and Prestige items. If I cannot afford it, there is always that one thing called CHOICE. Use it.
