Fixing The AWFUL Fan Game I Made In Middle School

  • Many years ago, in the days of GameMaker 5 and 6, I dreamed of creating a Sonic fangame. And I tried - to disastrous results. I've learned a lot about developing games since then - mostly in Godot - which begs the question... could I make the game properly now? How about in less than 24 hours?
    Let's find out.
Check out my upcoming game, Lost Resolve! store.steampow...
Huge thanks to my friend Zerebos for making this project possible - both by helping with the game and testing way back when, and keeping the project files for all these years! zerebos.com/li...

I have been slowly but surely working on a turn based rpg for a while now. Watching this takes me back to highschool when i got hooked on trying to make games on RPG Maker. I remember even making school projects with it :'D

Yeah, opening up this project was super nostalgic for me. It's an awesome feeling to be revisiting game dev after all these years!

cool! You're doing an amazing job! It's so nice see how some occasions can really boost we up without our concern, txks for the inspiring video!

Every time I watch your videos it's like looking in a mirror. It's kind of weird.
I started with the same version of Game Maker you did around the same time, I made a sonic game too (but my sprite was Bass from Megaman) the world was Sonic sprites and it looked a lot like yours lol I've been making Godot games for a similar length of time now and I even took a break from Dev to play Shadow of the Erdtree too 😂 I just don't have any surviving projects from my game maker days unfortunately.

It's funny how similar our experiences are! It was definitely lucky that my friend had this project backed up, but I think I remembered it as being a lot cooler than it actually was. 😅I hope you've been enjoying learning Godot!

Since you mentioned Game Jams are you participating in Pirate Softwares Game Jam by chance? Seems like the perfect time. Also amazing work as always, I love seeing your progress on your game and look forward to what it becomes.

Yes, I am! It'll be my first jam ever so I'm a combination of nervous and excited - but if I can make anything resembling a decent game, I'll be thrilled. Thanks for the support!

Also regarding what "Blue Flame" could do, I think perhaps it could be used as a boost dash like in Sonic Rush series. I mean, that sorta feels like what you were going for originally anyway. Freedom Planet uses a cool version of such a dash.

Yeah, something like that would work great! I also need to play Freedom Planet at some point. I'm sure it would be right up my alley!

I know this was just a fun project and challenge and all, but if you do plan on expanding on this in the future, I'd definitely recommend checking out the Classic Sonic Physics Guide! I say this because I noticed quite a few errors(Sonic's animations don't speed up when accelerating, nor does he uses his running sprites at top speed. Very slippery physics, etc.)

Haha, having been a Sonic fan for quite some time I know there's GREAT resources out there for replicating Sonic's motion and physics. However, in this project the point was more to see what I could accomplish using my current knowledge in a very short amount of time, rather than a 1:1 recreation of Sonic's movement. Having the animations speed up and down depending on velocity (and including the walk animation) is something that would have taken a decent bit more time to implement, so I decided to keep it simple and just have a basic run and idle animation. Eventually I'll buckle down and tear into the 360 degree motion guide, as I'd love to include loops and more complex slope behavior in my own games at some point. But for now, this was a really fun challenge, and I'm pretty happy with what I was able to do in such a short time (even if it's far from perfect)!

Also note that this appears to be based on Sonic Advance, which has slightly different physics than Classic Sonic. In fact, if you remember the backlash to the terrible Sonic 1 port on GBA, that happened *because* developer tried using Advance engine with slight tweaks to replicate Sonic 1.
