I vaguely remember reading somewhere that Wellington was "never more masterly than in retreat". It is very, very difficult for many people to grasp that an orderly retreat isn't necessarily a defeat. It can be a strategic withdrawal. To preserve communications, or supplies, or necessary infrastructure, or lives, a reordering of the lines of battle may be the best action. Ukraine is still trading ground for time. But putting the river between them and the invaders may be their best bet. They don't want to trade lives for time. They need to hold where they can until the new heavy weaponry arrives in large numbers. Some is trickling in. But not enough.

@@spencerhopkinson9874 Ukraine has already won. It won the instant Zelenskyy's "I don't need a ride. I need ammunition." went viral. There are two aspects to this war. One is the physical fighting. The other is global judgement. Ukraine has already won the latter. There were three blocs, and two outliers, of response to Russia's invasion. The vast majority of western countries condemed. A very few already considered 'rogue' countries supported. India and China chose neutrality. And the African countries were uninterested. Now those African countries are facing dire straits because Putin is blockading grain shipments. This is not endearing Russia to countries foreseeing famine. All in all, Russia has comprehensively lost the global factor. As to the physical fighting. Ukraine has already won there. The utmost Russia can gain is the Donbas. They already occupied a large section since 2014. Thousands of lives, billions in infrastructure destruction, and trillions in military costs have been expended. The factories and land which, arguably, would have made future profits for Russia are destroyed. The port of Mariupol is the only inarguable benefit. And even that will need money poured into it to bring it into proper operational readiness. As I stated, Ukraine has already won.
Severodonetsk cannot into "another Mariupol" because there are no catacombs in the industrial area of Severodonetsk. The Ukrainian Military has to defend on ground level against advancing troops of LPR and Russia. Ukraine has already retreated into the industrial area of the city. What could resemble the siege of Mariupol is an encirclement of 15k Ukrainian troops in the agglomeration of the cities Severodonetsk, Lysychansk, Siversk, Zolote. If pro-Russian troops manage to do that, they can starve the Ukrainian troops and force them to surrender. According to western media, russia has failured its objectives by capturing different cities in Ukraine such as kherson, Mariupol, popasan, lyman Severodonetsk, Izyum and others. what kind of failure is this?
Russians haven't captured Kyiv, Kharkiv, Mikolaiyv, or Odessa. Regime change ("denazification") is out of their reach; Novorossiya is out of their reach; capturing Donetsk seems more and more unlikely as time goes on. Popasna was a town of, what, some 20,000 people? Some 10 kilometers away from the LNR border? Claiming its capture as a significant victory for Russia's military at this point is simply _pathetic._
