You putting your mistakes on here will prevent others from making them and saving thousands and thousands of bees. So sorry. We all make errors
Just what I thought bless those who share theyr foults!
No matter what happen these videos are important for others
Excellent point, survivorship bias is a real thing

You can tell he is very emotional about loosing his bees. That's why we love this guy.
That insulation keeps the wood from breathing. That builds up moisture.
The silver color also reflects sunlight preventing any warming during the day.
hey you should paint it black in the winter or cover it in something dark and breathable
Exactly
Yea if I was to guess the problem would be that insulation stopping the bees breathing. And for feeding you just need to leave them with enough honey.
Yes.
I just commented pretty much the same thing ill upvote urs hopefully he sees one of them
So sad that you lost your bees, but thanks so much for sharing your mistakes so we can learn from them too. 🐝Here's to 2018! 🐝
Hey!
Emmy :)
Emmy I love your content
hi i watch your videos
I love that you follow him you two are some of my favorite RUclipsrs! Sorry totally fangirling😁
Im so happy everyone is so supportive for Taras. Love that no one is giving backlash and can see how genuine he is. Taras is one of the few youtubers who never shows his "youtube face" hes always been so straight up and being himself. And you can see how upset he is for the loss of his bees. There's always next time! Just gotta learn from our mistakes ans keep trying :)
I agree
Never give up Taras! I believe in you!
EinsamPibroch278 ME TOO, We all do!!
Most of beekeeping is learning from your mistakes, since there are so many to be made and so much to learn.
We are with you taras
In the upper empty box, put in a large burlap bag stuffed with wood chips. It insulates the inside, above the frames and absorbs excess moisture and any moisture that might condense and drip off of the inside of the lid.
I also made a wedge shim (about a inch) to let to moisture out in addition to using wood shavings. Works great!
Tom Miller You are describing a quilt box. The burlap and wood chips absorb moisture. 👌💯
I can see the sadness on your face my friend. keep trying, bees are very important and you are a good person. keep trying and never give up!
Wrap the beehives in black tar paper the same used on roofs. This will absorb the heat of the sun instead of reflecting the heat with the metallic paper you used. The tar paper will help keep the bees warm.
My thoughts exactly ? That heat may have rid the hive of condensation ? Use those reflectors during summer. Sorry you lost so many, and I thought they should have enough honey left to eat through winter?
My Father worked in Bees and bee research for years he suggested to get the book “The Hive and The Honey Bee” from Dadant. He also said he would gladly talk with you about bees if interested. - Dave
This is really great! Everyone is so very supportive.
This guy looks soo sad in this video
help hes gonna murder my bees save them please
WAL33D MAS he has a name you know.
Blue Dog Thing I know
i'm sad too, the poor bees :(
In russia winter is very harsh
*"Every expert was once a beginner"*
_Learn from mistakes and come back stronger_
I simple technique to help keep your bees warm is to buy some bales of hay, and stack them around the hives to cut the wind from hitting them.
This reduces the wind chill factor, which helps keep the bees much warmer.
The wind chill factor is the temperature felt from the impact of the wind and it is colder than the average temperature of the area.
Yeah, polystyrene boxes help too. Does the hay work better than the normal insulative wrapping?
Such a genuinely nice guy, sorry for the loss.
"It was as if thousands of voices cried out and were suddenly silenced..." =(
May the bees be with us, always.
RealRuler2112 where was that I missed it :(
RealRuler2112
Was that OBEE Wan KanoBEE that said that?
😁

If taras dies at a maple syrup factory it would be karma lml
And if you're planning to order packages or nucs for the spring, be mindful of moths! As soon as it gets warms in early March or April, they will tear that comb to pieces. Take it inside until you have bees to protect it.
You can tell how distressed he is over what happened. I'm glad he is learning from his mistakes. Keep on beekeeping on!
Awwwww :( Such terrible news... so sorry for your loss, Taras. This is heartbreaking. Wishing you all the best success for the spring!
I used to work for a bee company and we fed "sugar syrup" to them. Only difference was we had a feeder tray in the hive. Take out one outside frame and replace it with a feeder tray. This keeps the "sugar syrup" directly away from the bees.
This was sad, and I did really like this series and when it starts back, I'll be here.
Condolences Taras. You really did your best to look after them. These things happen sometimes. I wish you all the best in the next season. Thanks for sharing.
In winter the bees will eat the honey they stored. You should leave enough honey in the hive for the colony to eat and survive the winter. Also take any metal off on hive and replace with wood. Metal can retain cold and cause the bees to get cold. Just leave the honey for them to eat and no syrup and they should be fine.
you could also give them a sugar solution before winter and after you've taken out the honey, that way they will store the sugar solution which they will eat during the winter
You seem to really enjoy the beekeeping, everyone makes mistakes and you learned from them, and now you will be more cautious :) good luck going forward
I'm very sorry for your poor bees, and for you. I can see how much you truly cared. I hope you will try again.
Gotta crawl before you walk, time to try again mr Taras! Never ever give up!
Google “sugar fondant for beehive” recipe, and that’s good for them to have during the winter!! EmmyMadeInJapan (a RUclipsr) made a video about doing this for her bees through the winter!
You'll figure it out for sure. I applaud your effort as we all know honeybees are so important for our future.
Dude, sorry for the loss, keep your chin up and thanks for posting to help other new bee keepers.
I feel sorry for him
I feel sorry for his bees XD
yeah!!
I hope you keep going! We need more people to keep bees.
A lot of bee keepers say to stay away from hive wrapping since it causes condensation and traps moister.
You can tell how sad he is, this video breaks my heart! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
You should talk to local professional bee keepers about bees in the winter. All bee keepers have this problem too.
Taking responsibility is the first step, learning from your mistakes is the second step. Mistakes are lesons.👍🏼
LocalPrankerz yup they are lesons
We all make mistakes when we start something new. I lost a colony two years in a row. It's important that we learn from our mistakes, just like you said. Keep trying, keep learning. Keep bee keeping.
Rob B I bet that hurt to lose your colon
NoneYa Business especially the second time
It sure did. Each time I only had the one colony. But I asked a couple of experienced bee keepers and learned. I have one colony now that is in its 3rd year, but we had a pretty hard freeze already and still another month of winter.
I think the auto shades may be blocking warm sun while trapping in moisture.
Good walk through video. Looks like you've pretty well got it figured out. You can use those chewed frames. If you're worried about mice having been on them just rinse them in a bleach water solution, let them dry and they'll be fine.
I've used some in much worse shape sadly.
Me too.
628DirtRooster hey big fan
Thanks Adam :)
Fancy seeing you here, Randy.
You will do better next time. It takes a lot to be so open and honest about your shortcomings, and we admire you for it. Best of luck
Sorry Taras There winter has been harsh all over the country. I hope you get a chance to start another beehive. You do great things at everything you do
Big Dog Studios, phhft. It was 26 degrees in anchorage Alaska on new years meanwhile I had a -25 degree wind chill in Pennslyvania!
Aww sorry about losing your bee hives. We all learn from our mistakes and I hope you can do better next time. 💟
He looks so sad 💔
Samantha Baskersville I would be too
Samantha Baskersville yea he looks so sad
I'm sorry for your loss although the honesty and positive persistence and ongoing great content is very welcome! Such a great content provider! Looking forward to more great bee content going forward.
Mistakes is how we learn best...most memorable lessons. It's going to be Spring right around the corner and looks like you'll be ready to catch some swarms after getting those boxes and frames sorted out. That's one cool thing about you Taras....you are always busy and working hard! Hang in there and thanks for sharing this video.
Yeah, this was a long time ago but those are perfect swarm traps and I wonder how that went!?
Did wax moths get in your comb?
Sorry for your losses Taras. You have been doing so great uptil now, and sometimes things happends. Just bounce back and do even better next time around. Great videos Taras, I love your beekeping videos.
Your intention was good. We all make mistakes and that’s how we learn.
Taras, sorry to hear about the bees! But the positive side is that you figured out where the mistakes were and you can go forward being more knowledge.
Good luck!
Kathleen Moritz couldn't have said it better.
life is trial and error we learn from our mistakes and keep moving foward with the knowledge we learn your on the right path sometimes you got to take a L
My theory for the sugar syrup leaking would be because of the freezing temperatures you get, water expands as it freezes, as the syrup started to freeze the pressure in the jar would have risen pushing the water out all over the frames
hope you have a better result in the spring
You made mistakes and we all do, just learn from what you have done I feel for you friend, next year you will do well
Bees are a very important part of the food chain, this is sad on so many levels ...but respect Taras for all your efforts and good luck in the furture
Also when I lost my hive last year I cleans up the hive and put it back in same location and some 🐝 moved into it. Free bees. Great!
Compassion from Canada. Takes a great person to admit mistakes. Thank you for teaching ❤️ Sorry for your loss...top of bottom boxes still full maybe cause heat rises and moisture sinks with cold.
Taras, I think you should contact the local university extension service, if there is one there. Why? Because they would have a wealth of information ESPECIALLY regarding your area, (I haven't finished watching your video). Perhaps there's a bee keeper's association, too?
I am sorry you lost your bees, Taras. I am in NC as well. I hope you have better luck in the future. :)
Build an insulated shed and store them in there
Ask Cody to help you. A bee-colaboration would be nice to watch.
More bee vids!
Colabeeration hehe
Dude I was gonna say the same thing
GBatT that would be awesome
GBatT that would be sick
You can tell how sad he is. Poor bees. But failure is the key to success
that syrup bottle leaked because of changing or freezing temperature, when water freezes it expands, and when it expanded it went out the cap.
isellcatlitter I hope Taras sees this comment!
Agreed
We need the bees, so please keep doing these videos and keep us updated as you can.
Your beehives can only get better from here. Stay positive Taras.
So unusually cold this winter in NC.... Hang in there.
That's a shame!! But you have to keep going and raise more bees because as you probably already know the bee population is in trouble because of colony collapse disease!! And we need all the bee keepers we can get!!
It’s ok Taras, everybody makes mistakes, you are a nice person!
Move the hives into a barn or shed over the coldest part of winter
Its all a learning process Taras keep your head up , we all make mistakes
It's ok taras! What you do is great honestly. I hope you continue to beekeep. Learn from your mistakes
Taras, you are still learning, you were just trying to do the best thing for your bees. Sorry for your loss 😢
I am sorry for your losses Taras. The best of luck for the next year
We can all tell that you truly feel awful about this. Thank you for sharing this experience for others to learn from. Good luck in the future!
Dang, sorry Taras. I can see how devastated you are. Keep it up.
I wish you luck with the new bees. Glad you still have one that survived. Thanks for admitting that you may have made a mistake. We all learn from that.
i love your respect to animals
I'm so sorry to hear that. You seem to be quite knowledgeable so this setback should make you a stronger beekeeper.
The new start will be better than ever! Wishing you the best Taras! I love your beekeeping videos, thank you for keeping us updated on your bees :)
This guy got such an big heart ! He is sooo devastated for the bees
So very sorry....you did what you thought was best at the time. Now you know what to do next season.💙💙💙
Taras, even if you lost most of your bees, you're still saving more than people who aren't bee keeping. Chin up and keep going bro. Life happens and it just happened to dip for you here mate.
Build a small shed for the bees...
He almost cried
That was a cold wet winter. I lost around 70% that year in Charlotte. Always reduce hive in September to 1 deep and add a sugar/wood chip box with insulation on top.
Keep the bees, you always learn from your mistakes
I think you should cover the hives with black wrap, that silver will deflect light away while the black will warm them up by absorbing it
After every storm there is always a sunshine .....
Please hold your self in there tight
Stay happy stay positive
I'm so sorry for your loss Taras. I know the bees are almost like children. I hope you just keep on beekeeping and learning. Keep your head up
Thanks for sharing Taras. It's so sad, but you'll do it better in the future. I am looking forward to see more bee-keeping videos. Isn't that alu-bubble foil also keeping the moisture inside ?
The reflective insulation keeps heat from the hive in winter. Try putting dark cloth in them for winter.
I watch your videos for a few years now. I can tell how upset you were by this. You're usually very positive. I'm sure you will learn from this. Better luck next year.
The amount of caring you showed for your bees that you lost really shows your character, you truly cared about them, you have earned yourself 2 subscribers.
Great video Taras! Really educational and interesting. I learned a lot about bees and beekeeping.
Also never give up and good luck in the future!
All your mistakes are forgiven if you just continue to grow bee hives again!!!
Hey, Taras, I could tell how sad you are by the way you talked in this video. Sorry for your loss.
Sorry to hear about that, Taras. I hope you keep at it. I enjoy seeing your apiculture videos.
He looks genuinely sad
Kevin Zheng because he is genuinely sad
The bee handle moisture. They evolved from the water like everything living around you!
You can hear how upset he is, sorry for your loss
Anthony Hartman ye 😞
Sorry to hear this Taras but keep your head up and learn from your mistakes!
Change your picture.
So sorry, Taras..
I'm glad you are keeping local bees. Next year will be better!
I'm impressed with you Taras. It will help alot of beekeepers with this vid of yours.
I’m so sorry you went through this. I have a huge respect for you sharing what you learned so other new keepers can learn
