That was back in 1992 when Star Trek had a large enough fan base to consider building a 150 millon dollar replica. The funny thing is this project was under consideration and commissioned for nearly 10 years before it was scrapped. Mainly due to the shows ratings dropping after the 90's. Star Trek was eventually canceled in 2,005. In other words, Star Trek became irrelevant.

As someone who lives in Las Vegas i have seen the construction of this sphere all the time. I had no idea what it was before watching this however it looks smaller irl than on the internet
yeh, I was expecting this was going to be something covering a huge area of the city with the fountains etc in it, so as to address the evaporation issue. When he started speaking about what was going to be on the outside of it, I was still delusional & expecting he was going to say it would be covered in solar panels, so as to address the issue of the power from hydro being reduced. Guess I should have known better
@@augustday9483 How about reducing the power this new structure was going to pull from the grid? That's where I thought it was going, I thought it was going to produce 25% or 50% of it's own power needs or something I don't know how efficient it would be with it's shape, but in the desert, it should be pretty efficient. The pool I use in Sydney (so far less sun than Vegas), which includes heated pools, heavily heated spa and sauna, gym equipment & more has solar panels on it's roof & it's producing ALL the power it needs for all of that, PLUS feeding into the grid, so if this was regular shaped & used LED & other efficient tech, it should be able to be self sufficient in power, not sure how the shape impacts it, might be higher, might be lower, but no reason it couldn't aim to be power self sufficient as a role model building

I will definitely visit this on my next Vegas trip!
Everything we make today is uncreative. When you fit so much into a drawing, adding anything else only ruins it more, and the idea of adding anything else is already sickening because of the lack of good reputation the previous pathetic structures had showcased. They only care about what is new, not what they knew. My father constantly said that if enough people make their new construction unique, soon enough everyone will be making something unique and that in itself creates the most similar uncreative line possible. When they made the empire state building, their was a new source of inspiration in the next new buildings to be made, all different sorts of art deco streamlined architecture, when they make a triangle tower or thin glass ruler (432parkavenue, 111-west-57th, even one 57 being the nicest example), the amount of variation is exceedingly limited, and all very much the same because it is a concept at that point, not a actually structure that can be used in different ways. My brother says buildings are more akin to art projects today more than anything, nothing functional, the interiors are hideous, and you can't expand on the idea without making something irritably similar.
I live less than 10 mins from where this is being built and I still didn't know it was being built til I accidently seen it out the corner of my eye driving home from work. Shows how much most vegas locals pay attention to the strip.
We’ve been hearing about this project for some time, glad they finally are getting it done. However, besides the overwhelming size and expense of this sphere, can you imagine how much it’s going to cost to maintain this on a daily, weekly or monthly scale?! ouch$
Not a issue when you think of the show prices in LV. The same concerts in your home town will be 20-75 bucks as apposed to 175 being the cheap seats. 🤔🤔
With a capacity of 17,500 and an average ticket price of let say $200 (I have no idea), They would make $3,500,000 each night. That is $1.28 B a year so I don't think they are that worried.

You are bound to miss a couple as you try to pry things apart and of course you can't because the screw won't allow it. If nails can't be pried or pulled, they can be cut off with a reciprocating saw...You can cut screws this way, too, but they are generally much harder metals...It won't be long till we are building out of plastics and we'll have to drill and screw everything, but fastening wood in residential housing should always be done with nails... Like screws, there are hundreds of types and sizes of nails, a technology that existed for thousands of years and has been used for perfection by great craftsmen...Screws can hold things together when you haven't accomplished good joinery, it's a quick fix that "weekend carpenters" have been using because they are unskilled and lazy...Build a whole deck with screws and go back 10yrs later to change half the boards and you will have a LONG job of cleaning out the roberts or phillips heads before you can get your bit in there...Try backing out a bent screw or one that is broken in the top half. A proper sized flat bar, crow bar, wrecking bar and good old fashioned leaverage, and you can pop that board off in a minute, cleaning the board of nails is a cinch, too, when you know how...They guy struggling to remove screws will be working a long time after I'm done stripping, denailing, and stacking my deck...

Agreed. I don't like to see gaudy and distracting adverts in public spaces, I think it gives people less freedom to enjoy the space on their own terms, and think whatever thoughts they want to. So I do get why people immediately impacted kicked off. Equally, you’ve got to be open minded and accept quite literally anything can get developed opposite you in a major city, especially when you’re purchasing or entering a long term agreement. For anyone to think he was insinuating that this was the first globe shaped building in history is preposterous.
There is plans to build a replica of this in Stratford, London by the same company. It’s currently going through some planning problems since it really doesn’t fit with the skyline.

I wish we had more insane and unnecessary things like this in the world. While there's literally no real reason that we "need" this, these types of structures really show what us humans are capable of.
I’m sad you didn’t mention the current biggest spherical building: the Avicci Arena (aka Globen) in Stockholm, Sweden. Would have love to see a size comparison between them.
The Avicii Arena (aka Globen) is 110 meters in diameter. (Where the complete diameter is internal space.) The MSG Sphere is 157 meters in diameter. (Where a good few meters is just scaffolding to support the LED panels that makes it "157 meters in diameter", the actual building is a good bit smaller. (Practically the equivalent of Vanity height but for spherical buildings.)) Without the scaffolding it is more reminiscent of any domed roofed stadium than a sphere.
@@rafalinares I found it more interesting that the B1M didn't even mention the Globe, it really isn't a new structure. Though, the B1M might just have forgotten about it, like the architect for the Oriental Pearl Tower that wanted to claim having the largest sphere on a building, but 50 meters wasn't close. There is also some sphere in France that for a good while stated it were the largest sphere as well. But were even smaller at sub 40 meters. Though, looking at the cross section at 1:52, one can argue that the MSG "sphere" is only a decorative outer shell surrounding a regular domed roofed building with slightly bulging walls.
The following sentences is fairly incorrect. "The world's first spherical structure" 0:52 "It is unlike anything anywhere else on the earth." 1:40 The Avicii Arena (Formerly the Ericsson Globe Arena) in Stockholm Sweden would like to disagree with its own 110 meter diameter. Where almost the complete diameter is the building, not some loose scaffolding surrounding it. And it has existed since 1989. And is regularly lit up in various colors and sometimes its exterior is also having more fancy graphics projected onto it. All though, the Avicii Arena doesn't feature a gigantic cinema inside it, since it is primarily an ice hokey arena. But has a seating capacity of 13850 people, or 16000 for concerts. (Though, Metallica managed to cram in 17303 people back in 2018...) (But these seating numbers do not include the WIP boxes, and the overlooking restaurant and hotel.) But in the end, a huge spherical building used in this fashion really isn't something new.
@@jamestucker8088 Except that the MSG sphere is a regular boring domed roofed building surrounded by scaffolding supporting the spherical outer shell. 1:52 One can argue that the building itself isn't a sphere, similar to how one can argue that a sky scraper isn't 100 meters taller just because one adds a huge antenna on top of it. The Avicii-Arena/Ericsson-Globe/-Stockholm-Globe is however a sphere where everything inside of its exterior surface is interior space.

It was going to be downtown - not on the Strip. They built Fremont Street Experience instead.
I would never go to Las Vegas, at least not for the foreseeable future. I would rather go to the UK and Europe or even Sweden, Australia or Russia. But I have to admit, building a USS Enterprise NCC-1701D would have been über cool.
It's not that. It's Vegas. People are going there to get drunk, gamble, go to clubs/shows and buy hookers. Not enough people are going to take a tour of the Enterprise to justify the expense.

A proper sized flat bar, crow bar, wrecking bar and good old fashioned leaverage, and you can pop that board off in a minute, cleaning the board of nails is a cinch, too, when you know how...They guy struggling to remove screws will be working a long time after I'm done stripping, denailing, and stacking my deck...

sounds like fun. also say goodbye to ever seeing any stars on the night sky..though they might already be blurred out in london.
Agreed. I don't like to see gaudy and distracting adverts in public spaces, I think it gives people less freedom to enjoy the space on their own terms, and think whatever thoughts they want to. Instead of buy x, use service y, etc.
The pedestrian bridge across from the Westfield to the old town centre could have a nice view-but that's permanently blocked by adverts. You have to wonder who these places are designed for, if not the people who use them every day.
So they have the privilege of living in the Capital, but they don't want development. The rest of the country would kill to have something like that, we can't even get a bloody KFC nevermind something like this. Build it, if they don't like it, they can move. I have sympathy to a point, but they don't realize that the world is bigger than them, and although they may not like it, thousands upon thousands more will and it will have a positive impact on the economy.
Bloody NIMBY'S

@@joepopplewell680 yeah I agree with some of your point and I am certainly pro development especially for economic reasons. But it’s not as black and white as that I guess. If you’re living in a high rise with a view or even a low level house/flat. If a developer goes and puts that on your road when you have a nice happy street that you have invested in with family, I can’t even begin to imagine the amount of people who would flood down your street weekly suddenly when a 20,000 seat arena has just appeared outside your house. So I do get why people immediately impacted kicked off. Equally, you’ve got to be open minded and accept quite literally anything can get developed opposite you in a major city, especially when you’re purchasing or entering a long term agreement. I’m located just outside of London but agree there’s plenty of other cities that this would get more attention from and benefits. I’m sad you didn’t mention the current biggest spherical building: the Avicci Arena (aka Globen) in Stockholm, Sweden. Would have love to see a size comparison between them.
Indeed. Or did they not know it existed? They have to!
The Avicii Arena (aka Globen) is 110 meters in diameter. (Where the complete diameter is internal space.)
The MSG Sphere is 157 meters in diameter.
@@nystemy thanks for this data. Very interesting that the Vegas globe will only be marginally bigger than a building from the late 80’s.
"The world's first spherical structure" 0:52
"It is unlike anything anywhere else on the earth." 1:40
The Avicii Arena (Formerly the Ericsson Globe Arena) in Stockholm Sweden would like to disagree with its own 110 meter diameter.
(Though, Metallica managed to cram in 17303 people back in 2018...) (But these seating numbers do not include the WIP boxes, and the overlooking restaurant and hotel.)
But in the end, a huge spherical building used in this fashion really isn't something new.
This one is 157m in diameter so is much larger.
@@jamestucker8088 Except that the MSG sphere is a regular boring domed roofed building surrounded by scaffolding supporting the spherical outer shell. 1:52
One can argue that the building itself isn't a sphere, similar to how one can argue that a sky scraper isn't 100 meters taller just because one adds a huge antenna on top of it.
The Avicii-Arena/Ericsson-Globe/-Stockholm-Globe is however a sphere where everything inside of its exterior surface is interior space.
After the U2 concert, it’s staggering how far it’s come!
That is absolutely legendary. I love this channel, you get to find out about some awesome projects.
Love to go visit the place again! Every-time I go there, it a whole new place.
I’m a “ local” here in Las Vegas and it has been very interesting to see it taking shape. There is a buzz around town about how the experience will ultimately turn out. I’m excited to see it someday.
Imagine a movie screening in this dome, it would be bigger, better and bolder than IMAX.
Totally!
Love to see such an iconic building.
The wiring of this building must be a maze! Compared to horizontal buildings
It should be all wireless
The maintenance will be hell

40 years ago, the big sphere in Vegas was the Omni-max theater at Caesar’s Palace.
I love how they have U2 opening this. Greatest innovative live band for most innovative venue in the world. Let's, fn, GO
So glad I was able to be one of the first people to see this.
Amazing work as always!
