- Band of Brothers Filming Locations Then and Now
Band of Brothers was a ground breaking mini-series from Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks released on HBO in 2001. Filming took place mostly in England during 2000 and one of the locations that features heavily in Episode 1 and 3 is the village of Hambleden in Buckinghamshire. Hambleden was used to represent the village of Albourne in Wiltshire, the wartime home of the Band of Brothers prior to their jump into the Netherlands for Operation Market Garden.
In this episode of WW2 Wayfinder, I travel to Hambleden and look at the locations used during the filming of Band of Brothers, and talk through some of the key scenes an travel around the area to find more notable locations used in the filming of Band of Brothers.
This is the second in my Then and Now series looking at filming locations for WW2 related films and series so I hope you enjoy this look at Band of Brothers and the filming locations!

Seeing this reminded me why I appreciated BOB so much , stunning scenery and great visuals brought the series to reality. An enjoyable episode with some outstanding detective work, thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
On reflection I think Ep1 of the series is my favourite as it’s so beautifully filmed and the range scene with the Thompson SMG’s and Bazooka firing in to the Jeep is so well done.
@@WW2Wayfinder Agree, Ep1 sets the tone for things to come. A fav of mine is Ep4 parachuting into Holland the visuals made me feel as though I was there.
My gosh, that is a beautiful village. I would love to visit there someday. Thank you for this, it was a very well done video.
I hope you're able to soon as it really is a great spot and the surrounding area is really nice too so definitley worth your time if you're able to!
Aside from the red phone booth, I cant believe you have the actual uniform that Ron Livingston aka Lt. Nixon wore on the series. Outstanding addition to your collection!
I was very lucky to pick it up when I did before it all started to go for silly money. What it's worth now certainl isn't what I'd pay for it as Im not that big into the reproducton uniforms they had for the show but I won't part with it given how iconic the seires is!
Great video! Perfect timing considering I'm currently rewatching Band of Brothers again.
Ah perfect! Hope it gives you a good idea of how it appears today and the shots the film crew used. It must have been great to live in the village and see it being filmed right on
Your doorstep!
I review this over and over., This is why I follow WW2 Wayfinder today ! Top Man !
Thank you!!!
My son and I are leaving on July 12 on a 2 week Band of Brothers tour. We start out in Aldbourne and stop at the Littlecote House before heading to Normandy.
Will this be the Stephen Ambrose Historical Tours version?
@@edmundgonzalez8731 Yes. George Luz,Jr will be the tour guide for our group.
Are you going with the Stephen Ambrose tour company?
@@RobinsWatchJourney Yes. We already went and had a great time. George Luz,Jr was our tour guide.
@@jeffbeaver4419 Excellent. I’m signed up to go in May, 2025. Any tips you can pass along?
24 years!!! Man I feel old now 😁 A fantastic video as always, and what a lovely village
I know what you mean! I remember watching Ep 1 & 2 on the BBC and have no idea where the time has gone!
This is brilliantly done, really enjoyed it. The drone shots really help make sense of the orientation of everything, with lovely close-up detail too. Must have been great for such a big fan as yourself to see all those spots in person.
Thank you! Hambleden is a great spot and so nice to see that it's barely changed since they filmed there! Thank you for watching.
This is a great look back on the filming locations.
On a fantastic miniseries
This is very cool! Your detective work along that stone wall is impressive!!!
Thanks, Jon. It was wonderful to see such a beautiful and picturesque English village. Nice dry day there, too!
Another fascinating video. It's great to see the true locations of the 'Aldbourne' village scenes and to find out which village was actually used for the series. It's a beautiful location.
Glad you enjoyed it! Hambleden is a great location and while it’s quite different from the real Aldbourne it’s definitely got a real charm about it and the whole area is stunning
Outstanding video. It shows that these were not movie sets but actual places we can visit. Excellent work Jon.
@@firstcitytraveler my pleasure! If you ever get the chance Hambleden and the surrounding area is a great spot to visit and Henley on Thames and Marlow both of which are beautiful towns are nearby too so plenty to see in the local area there!
Well, another excellent video. Such a quaint and lovely village. I can see why my mother loved the English so. Jolly good.
This is a very beautiful village. It looks like it's right out of a story book.
It really is! It's a wonderful place to just spend an hour or two regardless of the filming that took place there!
This guy is great. Love his enthusiasm and delivery. Thanks pal!🥃
Thank you!
Appreciate this as an avid BOB fan. Have been to many BOB locations from Toccoa to Kaprun. Aldbourne is on my to do list and thanks to you, so is Hambleden. I may run by that phone box yelling "hi ho silver"! lol
@@davidwillis4839 fantastic! Hope you’re able to get there soon as it’s a wonderful area to visit!
I think it's time I dig out The Band Of Brothers box set again as I haven't seen it for a few years..... What a splendid video you have done here. A big pat on the back to you.
@@nigelbevan8449 thank you! Glad you enjoyed it and that I inspired you to rewatch the series! Even all these years later it’s still as good as when it was first released!
@@WW2Wayfinder I completely agree with you... A very well documented series and extremely well acted by all the cast members.
Your dedication to examining the details of these locations and periods is fascinating and most welcome to me, a retired architect with an avid interest in WWII history. The US military by necessity, was projected into a centuries old landscape, with centuries old social history. How the US presence made accommodation with those facts (or perhaps regrettably, not) is a subject of many layers, and still of interest today. Cheers, and my best.
Great video with interesting locations. Where Winters met the man on the bike appears to have been shot during late autumn or winter as there are no leaves on the trees. That would explain the lack of growth on the hedges at that time. lt looks like your video was shot either in late spring or early summer. Keep up the great work.
What a great video Jon, I knew every single one of those photos, must have watched BOB a hundred times !
So the jeep that Sobel is in belongs to my friends parents ! They still have it and take it to Normandy,
What a great party that was this year !
@@fortague that’s amazing!!! Just to own a Jeep is cool but one with a history behind it even if it’s from the tv series is great!
Thanks for sharing this fascinating information about Hambleden as the location of the filming of BoB, I've been a fan of the series since it first aired back in 2001, and really enjoyed this vlog. I'm travelling in the area next month and will definitely pay a visit to this beautiful village. Thanks again for sharing this fascinating story.
Glad you enjoyed it! It’s a great spot to visit and the whole area is just a great part of England. Hope you have a great trip there. Turville which is a nearby village has also been used in lots of tv and film productions too!
I look forwards to your informative episodes , especially the recent 80th D day ones, first saw the beaches in 1976 and with my Son in 2008 including the Pegasus bridge museum.
Thank you Martin! I’ve got some great Normandy content on the way, one episode in particular will feature places that haven’t been filmed before for either RUclips or regular history documentaries!
Your due diligence is exemplary-great work!👍
@@blister6884 thank you!!!
Excellent work as always! I guess I’ve probably watched the series 10 times by now and several individual episodes more than that.
Great video, fantastic detective work with all the details, Band of Brothers greatest series ever made thanks for posting
@@neilconlon1298 my pleasure! Hopefully it expanded on the various locations used during the filming!
I love this kind of thing. I did a similar thing from when we were stationed in RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus in 1963 - 1966 (I was 6 - 9) , and my Wife and I returned in 2018 and recreated some family photos. I particularly like the modern day photos of places shown in WW2 photos. BOB is a truly magnificent series.
Oh cool! I have been to Aki for a while (2019) was the last time as I was transiting through there but would love to have done a tour there. Hope you had a nice time going back there
@@WW2Wayfinder we were able to get on the base and went inside our old house which incredibly was due to be demolished!
I got to see one of the original stable blocks at the BOB museum in Taccoa, GA and also the old Camp Toccoa grounds. It's definitely worth the drive if you're any where around Clemson, SC. The story behind the museum acquiring the old structure is heart warming. When they were scheduled to be torn down the museum or related party stepped forward and the Georgia Air National Guard provided the transportation from the UK to the States and they were reassembled inside the museum, the old Toccoa Rail Road station.
Great video, nice to see the place used to portray Aldbourne. Never knew till now, Always enjoy rewatching Band of Brothers
Keep up the great content
Just down the road from me. I lived in Bucks for 20 years. lovely County.
Fantastic video. Not far from me so I’ll be going.
Absolutely beautiful area. Great research as always Jon, well done and great info about the filming area. Thank you. 🫡🇺🇸🇬🇧🇨🇦
Thank you Troy! Hambleden and that whole area is stunning. The village just up from Hambleden is where Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was filmed as well as Sleepy Hollow as well!
Ok, very interesting, Thank you.
This is brilliant iam a big fan of the series and was a driver in France for the 2014 band of Brothers reunion so meet a lot of them so seeing this it's great well done you always put so much into your films .many thanks.

Your work is fantastic, congratulations!
Thank you! Very kind of you to say so and I appreciate you taking the time to watch the episode!
It's interesting to see how they manipulated the color palette for Band of Brothers. Great work.
Definitely! The colour grading is perfect isn’t it. Really gives it a great feel and that it was of that time rather.
Fantastic as always more please
Damn, I feel old/er now hearing BOB was filmed 24 years ago. I remember excitingly watching each episode as it aired on HBO! It was sooo good. It was very cool to see these shooting locations in 2024. I wonder if any of the actors have been back to see them as well.
Nice job!
Well done Sir, really liked the comparison's striking village beautiful thanks again 👍
Thank you!!!
Great job on the episode Jon
Thanks!
The two camera crew in your photo are, operator Chris Plevin and 1st. AC Alex Howe... They are still working hard to this day and we all have great memories of working on the show. So glad that the series is still held up as one of the greats. The main base for the show was the old De Havilland factory in Hatfield, same place as used in Saving Private Ryan. Sadly mostly all gone for industrial buildings and housing. Most of the exterior set builds were on the old airfield site and the main set was reconfigured from a Normandy French town through to eventually a German town as the show progressed. Lots of locations around Hertfordshire, Hatfield and old Welwyn. Some of the final episode was shot around Interlaken, Switzerland.
Thanks for the info and must have been an epic experience to work on it! Hard to imagine it was such a long time ago now!
Great video. I want them to make another series similar to BOB. So many interesting stories to tell.
Thank you!
Would be amazing to see a series in the style of BoB but about the 6th Airborne in Normandy from my own point of view or about the 17th Airborne and Op Varsity
What a beautiful place this small village is. I really love these location walkdowns. I did this recently for the GOT locations in Northern Ireland. It is surprising how much a film crew can make out of a relatively small area and make it appear in the movie as if they had travelled the world for these location. Really great video you made here.
Great piece. Thank you
Great Vid as Always , Thank You 😊
Great video! I know Hambleden very well (I was there yesterday!) and it is a truly beautiful place. Thanks also for confirming the location of the stable scenes. I had always suspected it was Colstrope Farm but everybody I asked about it, just stared at me blankly! On which subject, the owner is currently restoring the grade II listed stable blocks and outbuildings as they were in a poor state of repair. So they should remain recognisable as a BoB location for many years to come. Hambleden village is frequently used as a film location and the porta cabin and vehicles in the field at 20:22 were left over from a major film production which was in the process of demobilising when you visited.
Its a wonderful village isnt it! Good to know about the portacabins etc, I wasn't sure if they were looking to do some construction work there but will be interesting to see what else has been filmed there. Also nice to know the stables will be restored. When I viisted no one was around to ask and didn't want to just wander in there without asking but good to know they'll be taken care of!
Another great one! Thank you. There are a few scenes that I’ve always wondered about when I watch the show. The scene when the guys were playing basketball in Aldbourne and Randleman throws the basketball off the back of the jeep. It was just such a funny scene. It really makes you realize that these were just kids. I’ve always wondered if that was an ad Lib. And I always thought that Alton More and Malarkey were genuinely surprised to see that truck come around the corner. They seemed genuinely surprised, and it appeared so real to me. And I always took the elderly gentleman who Winters “captured” to be a veteran of WW1. I think that was the reason for the respect and the tip of the cap from Winters. Maybe I’m reading too much into those scenes and it was just good acting.😂
Completely agree!
The scene with the elderly gent is my absolute favourite. From start to finish I think it captures that early 1944 atmosphere perfectly and how troops were on exercise all over the UK and the locals would inevitably stumble across them!
Thanks for watching!
Lovely to watch. Thanks. I'll be paying a visit!
Thank you! And well worth your time if you're able to make it there. And the pb at Turville, the next village along has a great lunchtime menu!
@@WW2WayfinderWent a couple of days ago and on your advice went to Bull and Butcher at Turville. A pub used in Midsommer Murders. Interestingly they were filming another movie at Hambleden, Three Bags Full starring Hugh Jackman and Emma Thompson.👍
Always wanted this video to be made, and here it is
Excellent presentation. Liked, subscribed, and rang that bell.
Thank you and welcome aboard!!!
I'm really enjoying watching your before and after photo scene's from "Band of Brothers".
This video is awesome Jon!! Like many others I think Band of Brothers is a great series, if not the best ww2 series ever made. So cool to see the locations where the filming was done. Great job mate
Thanks mate! I agree, out of the three Hanks and Spielberg have done, BoB is still the gold standard closely followed by the Pacific. I liked some of the Masters Of The Air episodes but ultimately I think it fell short due to poor writing from John Orloff.
fantastic. good show.
Great video thanks for posting .
Glad you liked it!
Great video thanks. Some irrelevant information is Jon Lord of Deep Purple is buried in the church yard, whilst the Stag was made famous when David Cameron left without one of his children.
Super BOB then & now. Surprised to see the change. Always thought England was very slow to modernize or change. Look forward to your next videos.
Great job again Jon 👏. I always wanted to visit that village. It's such a beautiful place. Does that Village get a lot of Tourism? Stay safe.
Thanks Mike! It was quiet in terms of what I could see from a tourist point of view but certainly busy for the local traffic!
It’s a wonderful area and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was filmed in the next village along from
hambleden along with a few other well known British films and series so a very popular area with the film industry!
@@WW2Wayfinder thank you for the info it's very much appreciated.
i used to work around hambleden quite frequently, it was well known through the grapevine that hambleden was widely used in TV/ film, in little britain there’s a scene where Davith walks down the main street, also nearby sleepy hollow was filmed, midsummer murders and not too far away is the windmill from chitty chitty bang bang. down the hill from the windmill is the vicar of dibbley’s church.
while watching BOB a while later i recognised hambleden in the back ground of those scenes! got very excited 😅
It's amazing isn't it how much was filmed around there. Went The Day Well is another great wartime film set in the same village as the Village of Dibley!
Amazing. I was there recently on a midsomer murders tour. I had no idea bob was filmed here as well. I wish id seen this before the tour. I woukd have taken many more pictures!
Oh cool! I didn't realsie Midsomer Murders was filmed around there too!
Been kicking myself all day that I didn't know before our coach trip there. The main detective in midsomer takes his car to that garage in a few episodes. A beautiful village, brilliant video👍
I'll have to have a look for that episode!
Outstanding

Loved it. Thank you. 😊
@@tonyhewitt1345 you’re most welcome!
Wayfinder ? Why was 'Hambledon' used and not the original village of Aldborbe ? Great post btw !
Hambleden was closer to Hatfield, the location where they filmed the big set piece battles so logistically and for the cost it worked for production company. I’m sure there were other reasons but those are the ones I’m personally aware of
@@WW2Wayfinder Makes sense, thanks for the reply, many posters do not respond ! means a great deal !
Very interesting and so nice to see not much has changed. Im actually pretty local to these villages and one of my mates lived in Ramsbury and another in Hungerford
Oh nice! Ramsbury is a beautiful area too.
Great video. Only 40 minutes drive away. F.Y.I . The Dirty Dozen was filmed around Aldbury nr me, and that's easy to match up. I do like your videos.

Great detective search.
Thank you!
That was awesome, thanks for taking the time to do these location videos, loved the series.
Great video ❤
Just rewatched the series
It's still great all these years later isn't it!
Brilliant work Jon! I was in the UK in 2022 near this location whilst at RIAT but didn't have the time to go look around. I was also near Hatfield on the train from Edinburgh. I really wanted to go look around there as well but just didn't have the time as I was with a tour group. It's sad that there is really nothing left at Hatfield, but would be cool if you can manage to go shoot some video there with any comparisons that you can find? Well done mate!
I’d love to visit Hatfield, not sure how it appears today but I’d love to mooch around there. I’ve got a few film locations planned so maybe I can see what’s possible with Hatfield. Sorry you were able to get there in 2022 but given RIAT is every year fingers crossed if you come back for the air show at Fairfield you’ll be able to get to Hambleden!

Wonderful video as usual. One thing to add I think Hambledon is in Hampshire so not the Chilterns which I think is north of London. I should know as born in Petersfield. So probably the "Hampshire Downs.
Thank you, and have a look at Google when you have 5 minutes, Hambleden is in the SW corner of Buckinghamshire just inside the Chilterns on the southern side of that region/area

Excellent and no doubt the tourist information board will be very thankful to you - even if not all the villagers might not be 😂
The actor next to Donny Wahlberg at the gate appears to be Sergeant Grant - Nolan Hemmings.
I also proudly possess an original copy of a BoB episode script, by the way.
Thanks! Very cool you have a script from the series. I bet it makes for some interesting reading with any changes that were made by the production team!

Very interesting. I've been to the real Aldbourne but not it's double.
Just visited the village today. They are filming again in the village, seems a regular place for period drama's.
I live in Maidenhead nearby. My kids used to go to a cubs camp just up from the village. Never know the Band of brothers filming though.
I wonder if that was what I saw being set up in the field next to the bridge on the outskirts of the village? Good to know it’ll be back on our screens at some point in the future!
I hope this helps the economy of this quaint town 👍❤️
Another great video to watch. Am I right in saying that the Curahee mountain runs were filmed at Longmoor Army camp and they run up Weavers Down to represent it ??
@@andrewlucas9282 I believe it was the same location used for the opening scenes in Gladiator. Can’t remember the name but it was the same woods. I know Longmoor was used for their ‘boot camp’ training
Truly an interesting look of what I suppose we Yanks would say is "a typical English village". The type (as well as from the general region) my paternal grandparents left from for a new life in the U.S., back before the First World War. That it's tied to the HBO BoB series is simply "icing on the cake" as they say!
That would be fun to walk around with u n match the photos
Good 😊😊😊
Thank you!
Incredible that its much the same 24yrs on..archetypal English village..did you get asked what you were up to by the village Bobby,Jon ??
The stable blocks were occupied by Able company 506th prior to DDay as there was only enough room for one company in them. Easy company occupied them briefly after dday before moving to camp chiseldon in preparation for market garden, at which point the 17th airborne took over the stables. Easy company along with other companies of 2nd btn and possibly baker company were situated on the green to the south of Aldbourne where time team did their recent digs
My family and I used to have pizza night to watch the Sopranos....I will never forget the shivers i got when the the first and then subsequent Band of Brothers pro-mos started airing. Thank you for this...the impact that BOB had on future generation history buffs is incalculable🤙😎🤙
Some of the original stable billets are in an indoor museum display in Taccoa, Georgia, not to far from Curahee.
Great video! Pippingford Park, East Grinstead is a good location, they filmed the scenes where Cpt.Spears "shots" the prisioners, and before they do the assault on brecourt manour. Been there a few times.
I've spent a few weekends at Pip Park in the past. Another great spot although the area that doubled as Le Grand Chemin has all been rebuilt now and is now a range of offices.
Thanks for that interesting video! I don't think you could get a more quintissential English village to film those scenes. Your opening shot of the church reminded me of the 1970's movie ' The Eagle has landed' but that is a different village! But I think, not far away. Cheers and thanks again.
Thank you! The Eagle Has Landed was filmed in Mapledurham, and as you say not a million miles from Hambleden! I’ll be doing a similar episode there at some point soon as that’s another favourite of mine!!
