  • The men of Easy Company of the 101st Airborne Division assaulted the Germans without knowing the strength or the unit they belonged to. This was perfectly done due to the extraordinary leadership of captain Dick Winters. With only one men killed in action, this was William Dukeman Jr. He is buried in the American war cemetery in Margraten.

It happened here at the crossroads. That day when captain winters balls grew so big, they shoved and entire SS battalion out of the area and he secured his place at Odins table.

Thank you very much Jon. This is the least I can do for the liberators of Europe. Absolute a must see whenever you come over to the Netherlands. Nothing has changed over the years. And is identical as in Band of Brothers.

Thank you for a very well done video that helps to better understand the battle.
To answer your question as to why the Germans targeted the crossroads I don’t know for certain. However, it is standard procedure that when planning a military operation that you also try to anticipate where the enemy might be or what they might consider important and pre-plan artillery on those locations. A crossroads, a hilltop, bridges, prominent structures and other natural or manmade features will be plotted so that artillery can quickly fire on them. Even if your enemy isn’t exactly on those feature, then it still makes it easy to quickly adjust the artillery fire from the pre-planned features.

The Germans likely had the cross roads as a registered on-call target. In the US military, we do the same thing. Not all registered targets are actually registered but sometimes if you have a good gun crew / FO team, fire missions can be executed with surprising accuracy.
