Just caught your comment about "professional seamstress's." Lol, if folks only knew how we did stuff. The "proper" way is the way that works for the person doing the job. Honestly, even after all of the couture training, I still rip, bunch my own pleats/ruffles( the ruffler tears fabric more than not), and common sense is the key. I love your style! Reminds me of my own. I have repaired more store bought junk than I can total. I rarely see self-crafted items for repair. Nuff said! I love watching you sew. Puts a smile on my face! A violinist friend with the Dallas Symphony told me that before she left home a date came before she was dressed and he had to wait for her until de made something to wear. She, however, basted her outfit together. 😉
I really love your skirts,Heidi. Just raided the hot press and cut up my first sheet and another one waiting. My husband is getting nervous! Says he can always use a sleeping bag! Thanks so much for your videos. I came across you for the first time today. God bless you and yours.

I did it!!! I found this beautiful tan or beige luxury sheet at my famous thrift store for 2 bucks, worked it up, and it turned out great! Thanks so much for your videos, I also watched the other ones and picked up some tips from those as well. I learned a lot putting the skirt together and got a whole bunch of new ideas to work up. I did decide to make all the tiers on the skirt anyway and quit worrying about looking fat cuz now I'm fat AND comfortable LOL! Thanks and God bless :-)
Lol that's me.. I'm worrying about looking fat with all that fabric and the bulk around my middle. I'm a 36" waist, 5'4" tall. I was wondering if the style would look bad on me
@@crazychicken4063 Make the front (hip to hip) flat (no gathering), push the gathering to the hips and back on your waistband (or first tier) to accomplish this effect. Look into Victorian !!!petticoats!!! and skirts, absolutely all the fullness was on the back, a bit has gathered to the sides but the front of those skirts and dresses were always made Flat! This is a great Starter video but just moving the gathers around and a Victorian esque style we'll probably accomplishthe silhouette you're looking for! Cheers
We used to call them "Little House on The Prairie" skirts. My Mom made them all the time with bonnets. I love skirts and dresses and have not worn them as much as I'd liked to. I too have sewn my life. My Mom used to scold me for cutting doll dresses out of the middle of a piece of fabric. I am so blessed to have been brought up by such an amazing woman. Thank you for sharing Heidi! I don't spend nearly enough time at my machines. You've inspired me to sew a skirt for me and my little lady! ♥️🙏♥️
I LOVE YOU!! I am learning how to make these styles of skirts and you made it super easy to understand. I am a Navajo woman from the Navajo Nation and don't have much tools or resources so watching your video is truly amazing.
God bless you. This video has so many tips and tricks. Last week I tried my first tiered skirt. I watched YT videos but they all worked in the round. (Closing the side seam first.) They also precut the exact length of each tier and gather it with running stitches.. and lots of pins.. Needless to say, it was laborious. I love your approach. I did purchase fabric from a warehouse, so I have generous lengths of fabric. I will probably tear and sew all the strips together, before making the tiers... Cheers for the tip on draw strings around the house. We also have dogs and I noticed with my elasticated clothes that they pull down when the dogs jump up. I missed the hole making. Buttonhole stitch? All in all, a very clear video on how to make this skirt. Thank you for going to the effort to record, edit and upload. I know it takes time. 🙏
We have similar sewing styles. I sew for pleasure, and am mostly self taught. I had been teaching myself quilting and stopped when my granddaughter passed last October. This has inspired me to at least get back to sewing…. And start wearing skirts again.
thank you that was fun. I love to sow too. I started when I was around 13 or 14 on an old non electric machine foot pump My mim thought me and my mom. No patterns butI am legally blind and as I get older my sight is much worse. It is frustrating to use a needle threader in one hand a 7times LED reading device in another hand to thread my machine I love the creative part. But it takes me longer to thread the machine then to make something So frustrating I wish there was a simper way for blind people to thread the needle God has given me so much but I sometimes wish I could see better. Thank you for sharing It brought back so much. I like your sewing machine too And wow what a great idea for a skirt From Ontario Canada
Wonderful skirt and I totally love the background music!!!!!!! I wish you was my neighbor, I really need to have a friend like you to learn from with hands on teaching. Thank you for the tutorial 😁
Oh my goodness. I have a bunch of sheets I have been accumulating from garage sales and thrift stores for rag rugs that I have been making. I used a few for these skirts. I have made 3 skirts already. All in less than 24 hours. LOL. My husband loves them. He likes me girly. I am not very girly by nature but am really digging the skirts. They will be my everyday wear for sure. Thanks for the inspiration!!! Love watching your videos. Thank you so much!!!!
Thanks so much! I will go do one right now! I never did my own clothes but I have been sewing a lot lot lot since my mom was doing coton diapers and I did thousands with her ... overlock and plain sewing machine. With this covid crisis, We bought a farm, starting a homestead and I will now do my own skirts ... like this! In a shabby chic style too, with laces and silk flowers for going to church :) God bless you! 🌷🌺🌸
Thanks Heidi, I think this gives people more courage to try simple sewing without all the hoopla of pattern pieces. I have only Grade 8 sewing instruction but used to make all my own clothes, and can alter thrift store finds. Sadly, sewing classes are sometimes negative experiences so your approach would be refreshing and at least people could learn how to operate sewing machines.
I’m so happy to find you! I’m retired now and want to start sewing myself some comfortable clothes. You are so clear and have a calm and soothing voice. Thank you for your videos. I subscribed💖
BEAUTIFUL, AND YOU MAKE IT LOOK SO SIMPLE TO DO, YOU ARE MY HERO. MY MOM COULD SEW LIKE THERE WAS NO TOMARROW, BUT BY THE TIME I FINISH SOMETHING I AM MAKING...I AM SO TIRED OF THE IT THAT, I DONT WANT IT. BUT I TOO LOVE SKIRTS LIKE THAT. THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEO! HUGS, GOD BLESS.
I sew exactly the same. I am self taught, and have made most of everything I wear. I wear skirts and dresses only. I hem and do a lot of eyeballing things, and know measurements and such without having to pin and all........but when you sew daily, it becomes easier. I am only 5 ft tall also.
I’ve been wanting to make a patchwork skirt with some of my old scrub pants since I retired from nursing. Refreshing to see your videos on skirt making! Thank you! God Bless!
Great video and I loved watching you sew. By hook or by crook, as my mom would say and they way I sew too. You and I have the same treadle cabinet - except yours is a lovely green. Love, love, love my old singer treadle. A tip to share (not a pro by any means) that I came up with one day repairing the draw string on a hoodie. Tie a simple knot of your yarn around the hook end of a crochet hook, then slide the non-hook end into the drawstring pocket hole and draw it through. You can gather it through quite fast. The longer the crochet hook, that faster it goes. It works for pulling elastic through as well. Thank you for sharing your skirt lesson!
When I was old enough to join 4H I took sewing & won many ribbon at fairs. Then in high school I took sewing & my mother started sewing at a young age also & was very helpful when I’d get stuck.. so to speak lol. I’ve sewed for my boys when young then outfitted my grandchildren when young 😍 Love the finished look & think I’ll have to give this a whirl lolol 👵🏻👩🌾❣️
I appreciate you taking time to share this helpful sewing video. I learned to sew on a treadle machine when 15 yrs of age. I was given a treadle case without machine, so will now refurbish it for off grid sewing. Thank you and blessings.
Love it!! You sew just like I do. I wing it, and it usually always works. Always felt like I was not up to par, or lacking compared to others. I know we're not to compare ourselves to others, but to see someone else winging it, is a blessing to me. When someone asks how I do something, including cooking, it's hard to remember what I did.Lol!
I have to say thank you very much. The skirt that you made Stacy out of blue jeans gave me such a really good idea and something I would really cherish. I have my husband's blue jeans and chambery shirts. I want to make a skirt using these items. 10 by 10 squares is perfect. I love the way you put the seams on the outside. I am a season sore and Have Nots use my sewing machine since his death. This will be my first project and get me started sewing again. The one thing about wearing skirts which I like down to my ankles is you don't have to wear stockings and they look great with tennis shoes. LOL if only the city girls would know this. Thank you again for the beautiful work you do and doing videos to show us how. Sister in Christ blessings to you and yours
This is so great Claudia, that skirt is going to turn out great! If you are able, I would love to see a photo of it when it is complete. My email address is in the description box of every video :). And yes, I will wear sneakers with my skirts too! haha
So sorry to read about the passing of your husband. His jeans and shirts made into a skirt by you is a lovely and loving idea. Think of the happy moments you will remember every time you wear it.
You are doing fine. Some may think they know so much more. But you show us that we don’t have to know a whole bunch just imagine and do it. You are awesome.
Thank You so much . I really love this way of making this kind of skirt . It is going to save me a lot of time . Blessings from Manchester England U.K X
So so beautiful! I don't know if I will ever be able to sew anything. I am 53 but still feels the need to keep learning new skills after my retirement. I can do almost everything- even all the women thing except sewing! Thank you for renewing my interest in sewing. I will surely try one day in the near future. By the way, you look so beautiful in the very skirt you made! God bless.
I am 52 (which is not old though I make joke about being old! haha) and am still learning new things all the time. Never too old to learn :D Thank you for the kind words!
SO HAPPY!! that i found this video i have soon a photoshoot and my biggest wish is to wear this kind of skirt!! now i can make it for me!! thank you so much!!!
You make gathers look easy! Lol. I tried last year to make a gathered petticoat as a winter buffer, and it was just a mess. It was such a pain to try to pin it all, and I didn't realize that the guideline I was using didn't have enough tiers, so it looked really stupid under my long skirts, and I just didn't want to fool with trying to make a new tier at the bottom. My husband bought a kingsized blanket that has been sitting in my closet because he didn't realize that it was essentially 2 sheets sewn together with a pocket to add batting.....or something, so I'm going to rip the two layers apart and make skirts out of it since I seem to have been binge watching you all afternoon.
You have made this skirt look so beautiful!!!! And you are so beautiful trying it on. You look like a princess!!!! I see you wearing it I would like a brown skirt too.
This is great! Thank you for showing us how you made yours. I sure am kicking myself for letting go of my treadle machine. Still, I'm happy to have what I do. As for those who want to critique you, they are just bored and want to step on your joy and kindness. Let it go and ignore it. I've been sewing for over half my life and rarely look at patterns, use pins, or even a sewing machine! I tend to lap sew. It may take a very long time, but my pieces are much prettier and far more unique. I am inspired by your shirt, and those great ones you make for Stacy, to do a few of my own. My favorite patch skirt is in need of similar hanging buddies. LOL. Thank you again for the great share.
Oh thank you so much for this video, you make things like me! I hate all the measuring with tapes, puts me off those videos, your amazing also I'm Irish, so I loved the background music. God bless you 🍀🙏
I absolutely 🤎 L-O-V-E 🤎 your new Frontier skirt! My mom showed me how to use her sewing machine when I was 12. Most of the clothes I wore as a teenager were home-made by me. I've been sewing and/or remodeling clothes ever since.💗
The funny thing is this video is five years old so it is not new anymore but I do still wear it, however, I have had to patch it here and there since it was made to be a work skirt and has had a LOT of wear, haha
That's exactly how I do projects like that! In our old town, there was a library book I checked out all the time which was called "Slapdash Sewing." I love that name, and that's how I sew. Cut corners and find ways to skip steps and you can throw things together really fast, lol. I kinda wondered about leaving the raw seams on the outside, but it's cute!!
I only did the raw edges on the outside on this and a navy skirt, it was a fun for a change but I prefer having them on the inside which is how I do most of my skirts. Slap Dash Sewing - that does sound like a great name. If I was to write a sewing book, I would call it "Fly by the Seat of Your Pants Sewing" HAHAHA
I am hand sewing myself a skirt from a homemade cushion cover I made a few years ago that got a rip in it. I had to repurpose the beautiful fabric and this is the perfect project for it. The hand sewing is therapeutic for me these days from time to time. I’m playing with using thin strips I had left over for the casing and the hem. I like a wider hem.
Love the skirt. I've taken many sewing classes in high school, but I measure & sew like you by eyeballing the distance with markings on my machine. You learn what works & use it to save time & always get pro results because you already know what an inch or 3 looks like.
I think this is my favorite video, "Jiggy Jiggy", lol. I'm making one, now, my first, and yes, I did manage to sew the first tier, wrong side out, dyslexia sewing 101......
Hi--I think this is awesome---THANK YOU! Not a professional here--but have been struggling with the woman of faith-modesty thing--gearing that way and will be attempting to make a skirt(s) for myself--in that time of my life and in my "walk" that this is important to me--for younger women and to set more of an example to other women..very important. Again, thank you and "stumbled" upon your channel. God IS good!
I also made up a homemade dress pattern. I find it comfortable and just what I want. It doesn't matter what some "professional"says. I am the one wearing it, buying materials and making it- for under $20. I plan to try your pattern. It looks loose and comfortable- thanks for the video.
I just finished my patchwork skirt yesterday and I love it so much! I never thought I'd be making my own clothes and I'm so proud of myself 🖤 I'll be buying a sheet set shortly to add a few of these too my wardrobe thank you so much for the amazing tutorials and motivation!!
Heidi I must thank you so much for this method. I have just got all my tiers sewn and I'm so happy with it and so excited! My husband loves it too and said it's a pity I didn't know about it years ago. I'll use top and bottom of the sheet for casing and a tie so I will have used pretty much the whole sheet. This is so much fun. Thank you so much again! Xx
Excellent work and "thank you" for taking the time to show how to make a couture skirt. I sew as well and never took formal lessons and started when I was 11 years old. (I made purses, garments, etc and had to do so because I am tall) I LOVE how interesting your life is. Again, Thank You for sharing
Thank you Cindy! I am short with an Italian shape so it can be hard to find attire that fits me the way I like so making my own is best, made better, and very frugal. To buy a skirt like this would cost about $45 or more.
I love this! Thank you! I am going to try and make one for myself. I have a machine and have sewed in the past but I am no expert so we shall see! Ha ha! I love your channel. I just found it and really enjoy watching.
This was truly a wonderful video. Thank you. I’m no professional but I know what I’m doing. This was very helpful. God bless. I love all of your videos.
Hi Heidi .. Australia here .. I have an old (almost antique) Singer treadle machine and cabinet in my car port, inherited from an older relative. It has all the parts, just needs someone who will come to the house to look at it (too heavy to transport) and service it.. I really like the idea of the treadle if it ever comes that we have no power .. also the exercise would be good for me.
Yay, I love your method. I'm a floor sitter too. Stepped out of my anti social zone and bought mats for cutting off of craigslist and I never use them! My baby sits on one while he paints =D
Hi Heidi, I am catching up on some of your videos that are coming up on my RUclips screen. This was a wonderful tutorial. And what a great savings making that beautiful skirt from a garage sale sheet!! I am SO impressed. I have been wanting to get a sewing machine for awhile now. The one I had from my childhood (from Sears!!) finally became unrepairable. I am going to look around for a used one and see what I find. Thanks for the inspiration!! Love, Mary ❤️😘❤️
Beautiful! I love this kind of skirt! I always called them gypsy skirts or peasant skirts. You've gained a subscriber, I can't wait to see more of your content!
Thank you Sophia! Hope you enjoy it, we have all kinds of different videos but I do have more on skirt making including a few on making the patchwork skirt (which is based on this same style) and how to add hidden pockets to each side :D
I just found your videos and am not sure why it took me so long! I bought an antuque treadle machine last year and it has been in storage due to moving and reno. I am glad to have found your video on how to use a treadle. Thanks! Have a great day!
I love this. I've made homemade cloths for my daughter, but I'm always nervous for myself, but I feel I can do this after watching your video and I will be looking for some nice used sheets!
You are so creative and very talented heidi. You make it look so simple yet, enjoyable. I wish to be talented like you by learning and watching all your videos. Ty so much for sharing❤
How good is that. Looks fabulous. So glad I found you. Just came over from Doug and Stacy. You have wonderful clips. So much information. Thank you and blessings.
I love the way you sew. Most of my sewing is done without pins and just because it seems right for me. I haven't tried a sheet yet but I will now because I love that skirt and with a pair of boots ..Outstanding :)
love you, thank you for doing things simple, i just got so inspiret by you, that i am going to make a skirt like this out of a bed sheet , i have for long time, its white with ants printet on it , and i love your sewing machine, i use a old singer hand sewing machine , or an oldie that have been my grandmas, i have been sewing my own clothes since i was 12 , and i am 50 now, and still make my own clothes, i love to wear skirts, , god bless and thanks for sharing
LOVE it... I have been looking for those kind of skirts. Never thought about using old sheets. Now if I could just figure out how to sew.. and then find a sewing machine.. LOL Thanks again for passing on your knowledge.. and encouraging us to try something new.. and do what works for us.. :P
Skirts like these are hard to find these days but I did find that black one I was talking about and can be seen in my ground cherry video on Amazon for only $25 (which is reasonable considering the amount of fabric though somewhat cheaply made). Comes in a ton of colors and sizes
Yeah.. I have found that even fluffy girl sizes are pretty expensive... but alas.. Amazon still hates us over here... LOL guess I'm just gonna have to bite the bullet and learn to sew and make em myself... LOL
I LOVE that skirt and the way you did it! I almost thought you were going to show how to make it a "tie top" skirt at first. I'm still trying to wrap my brain around a way to to do that rather than drawstring. I'm totally making your skirt soon as I find a spot for my sewing machine and pull it from storage!
I've made skirts like this, more fancy and with different patterned layers, but I like watching this one for learning a new way to go about it. I've made lots of stuff from bedsheets, but this is a new and great idea.
The funny thing is I spent 28 years making costumes with skirts of all kinds for our dance performances but it was only a few years ago I started designing and making my own skirts. I started selling my skirts not long after I came out with this video and my most popular one is my patchwork skirt and I have videos on how I do that. One video I especially like is not a how to but I will share it as it should show enough how I do it but you can also do a search for the other ones: ruclips.net/video/0-M6j41FlYI/видео.html
I LOVE this! All of your instructional videos make perfect sense to me cuz I see we both use a lot of the same non conventional techniques! I found myself laughing out loud and quipping "yes, yes, yes" when I see you doing the same cheating stuff I do! I've looked at other long skirt videos but they make me crazy so I'm gonna follow your instructions. Since I'm a little, fatty size 14 I'm just gonna make one long tier gathered into the top and then add a short ruffle at the bottom cuz otherwise I think the extra tiers will make me look like a walking tug boat, LOL! I too have found that sheets are much cheaper to use than bolt fabric and since they come in a variety of colors and designs I've used them for tons of curtain making. Right down the hill from me is a fantastic thrift store where I'm always on the hunt for sheets as well as great new fabric that people donate. From there I was able to make 40 school tote bags that I sent to a school in Zambia that was in need of them, oh what fun! Now I can't wait till they are open tomorrow so I can go and hunt up more sheets for skirts! Thanks so much for this blessed tutorial, have a fun and blessed day !
I love the way you sew. And I'm so happy to see someone else who also doesn't like to use pins and who eyeballs most things. 😍🌹

Thank you Stephanie, I am so glad what I share is helpful to others, this truly means a lot to me!
Wtg Heidi
You have inspired us
God bless you. This video has so many tips and tricks. Last week I tried my first tiered skirt. I watched YT videos but they all worked in the round. (Closing the side seam first.)
They also precut the exact length of each tier and gather it with running stitches.. and lots of pins..
🙏
My husband Roy passed by while I was watching n he stopped n said I love to here that music n it is pretty music
Ya cause that’s not weird at all that you were watching RUclips videos while ur husband was passing away
@@haileyharrigan2227 I said he was passing by me not passing away. He is still alive sitting here beside me today
@@haileyharrigan2227 dude read..lol
Thank you! :D
I thank God for the time you show us how to make a beautiful skirt and recycling at the best prices. 😇🙏
Great idea Susie, thank you!
When I was old enough to join 4H I took sewing & won many ribbon at fairs. Then in high school I took sewing & my mother started sewing at a young age also & was very helpful when I’d get stuck.. so to speak lol.
I’ve sewed for my boys when young then outfitted my grandchildren when young 😍 Love the finished look & think I’ll have to give this a whirl lolol
👵🏻👩🌾❣️
I used to do this when I was younger 20 years ago and thinking about making it again for myself it’s soooo comfortable wearing!!!!!!!!!!!
I appreciate you taking time to share this helpful sewing video. I learned to sew on a treadle machine when 15 yrs of age. I was given a treadle case without machine, so will now refurbish it for off grid sewing. Thank you and blessings.
Thank you Martha!
@@randyebastian8186 It's taking me a long time, I am almost done with it. Yes loving memories.

You are doing fine. Some may think they know so much more. But you show us that we don’t have to know a whole bunch just imagine and do it. You are awesome.
Thankyou Gigi :D
Thank You so much . I really love this way of making this kind of skirt . It is going to save me a lot of time . Blessings from Manchester England U.K X
Absolutely beautiful!! I love that you accessorize with a knife and cowgirl boots, too! I love your skirts and your talent for sewing! 💝
Love, love, love your skirts! I also love that you share how to make them! You are such a blessing and inspiration. The Lord bless and keep you.
Thank you!
SO HAPPY!! that i found this video i have soon a photoshoot and my biggest wish is to wear this kind of skirt!! now i can make it for me!! thank you so much!!!
Thank you Mindy! I do sew by hand from time to time too, it is nice because you can do it anywhere :D
Your sewing machine!!!! Foot pedalled!! So great!
Oh thank you so much for this video, you make things like me! I hate all the measuring with tapes, puts me off those videos, your amazing also I'm Irish, so I loved the background music.
God bless you 🍀🙏
I still make skirts like that but I start from the bottom up. That's how my mom and grandma taught me. I'm navajo too
You remind me of my Auntie when I was young she always making me dress, skirts and blouses.
Oh my goodness. I love your creations and the music! Thank you for sharing your wonderful talents with us. Im definitely gonna try this.
Dear girl. I just discovered your channel. What a breath of fresh air you are! I can't wait to see more and more and more!
Thank you so much Christy! Welcome to our channel and I hope you continue to enjoy what we have :D
Love the skirt. I've taken many sewing classes in high school, but I measure & sew like you by eyeballing the distance with markings on my machine. You learn what works & use it to save time & always get pro results because you already know what an inch or 3 looks like.
This is the way I like to sew. Thanks for making this video. These are my favorite skirts to wear!
I think this is my favorite video, "Jiggy Jiggy", lol. I'm making one, now, my first, and yes, I did manage to sew the first tier, wrong side out, dyslexia sewing 101......
Sometimes when I try to do the patchwork skirts with the raw edges out, it gets REALLY confusing! haha
Thank you Dawn :)
You are amazing, watched this a couple times so I can try it, you did a great job! Sue
I just now found your channel and I absolutely love it. I've been waiting to make these skirts for years.
I LOVE the whole “make do” good enough way you created this. I adore perfect;y imperfect sewing.
:)
Xx
Wow this was soooo was to easy to understand and see! My mom uses that snip and rip method! She swears by it sooo much!
Wow! It's beautiful! Can't wait to try and make my own, feeling very inspired!!! Thx!
This was truly a wonderful video. Thank you. I’m no professional but I know what I’m doing. This was very helpful. God bless. I love all of your videos.
Very pretty. My kind of clothes. Thank you for posting.
Very Cool! Never thought of using bedsheets! Brilliant!
Omg Heidi, I am so excited to watch & learn this!!! I just bought a beginner sewing machine on poshmark. Thank you for sharing🥰♥️
Interesting - this is the 1st I've heard that poshmark sold sewing machines. If u received it, have you tried using it?
I love what you made..self-taught is the best😊. Very clear instructions much appreciated.
Love this sewing lesson and the skirt. Love the easy no fuss sewing! I will be making myself one of these skirts.💙
i used to make a friend dresses out of duvet covers. Love this skirt.

BEAUTIFUL... Now I know what to do with my old sheets besides cushions.. Smile...Ninette Bird- Wife

Thank you Mrs Rain, this was so much easier then using a patten. My girls and I love this skirt style. Thanks
Glad this was helpful! :D
Congratulations!!! I love your skirt!!! I can see that you master sewing...I want to learn how to make skirts like you do!
I prefer to make my own ruffles too. It adds more of a personal touch than the foot. I can't wait to dig into my sheets I no longer use thank you!!!!
I really liked the result. I am gonna try making something like this to my wife too . Thanks for the inspiration.
Greetings from Norway :-)
I've made skirts like this, more fancy and with different patterned layers, but I like watching this one for learning a new way to go about it. I've made lots of stuff from bedsheets, but this is a new and great idea.
The funny thing is I spent 28 years making costumes with skirts of all kinds for our dance performances but it was only a few years ago I started designing and making my own skirts. I started selling my skirts not long after I came out with this video and my most popular one is my patchwork skirt and I have videos on how I do that. One video I especially like is not a how to but I will share it as it should show enough how I do it but you can also do a search for the other ones:
