In 1992, when it was all brand new, I went to Canary Wharf just to see it. It was the depths of the recession and I had read that the top floor of the tower was open as a tourist attraction - the owners were that desperate. We went on a week day, but It turned out you could only visit at weekends. The security guard on the ground floor growled at us apparently without irony, "During the week, this is a busy international office development." We were the only people there. Ir was silent and empty.
i have unused tickets for ascending one canada square, the option was withdrawn after the IRA bomb a bit further along the DLR route (South Quay?) When it was difficult to let One Canada Square the windows were lit in assorted colours and patterns in the winter nights, have some photos somewhere I took when passing the place.
@@highpath4776 shame you never got up there. I made it some of the way up a few years later. A friend of mine wa a summer intern at the Daily Telegraph and she invited me for lunch in their canteen there. The view was spectacular even though we weren't at the top. I was curious because I had passed by the consruction site in 1989 when I was doing a GCSE geography project about the LDDC. It was a big hole in the ground at that time. Then when the tower went up, you could see It from my home in north London. It was taller than Muswell Hill, and It seemed to follow us around the locality. Whenever you looked south, there ir was. It was a bit like the beginning of Yellow Submarine, when the submarine starts stalking Ringo..

Interestingly the Canary Wharf estate is considered to be private property, currently owned by Qatar if I remember rightly. There are little signs near the bus stops reminding people they can be removed at any time by the Wharf's private security guards...
After discovering that one of the scenes from Rogue One was filmed at Canary Wharf, I now have a mental picture of Star Wars shenanigans going on while a line of bankers in pinstripe suits and bowler hats silly walk their way home in the background. Hey, it's not the daftest thing in Star Wars.

After my first trip on the Elizabeth Line the other day, I got lost walking from Canary Wharf (Elizabeth Line) to Canary Wharf (Jubilee Line) - I hadn't realised there were two separate stations!😄

Retired 10 years ago but still wake up at 5.00am as I did for 34 years in order to catch the 06.05am train into London and four the last ten years into Canary Wharf. Nice video as always. Your snippets of transport in London are always informative and entertaining.
I am a London bus driver and we are regularly asked to carry Docklands Light Railway over the radio as the DLR frequently brakes down .When they have fixed it we get a clearance call.
One day the controller said"
Docklands Light Railway are pleased to announce that they have found a tanner (an old disused coin worth 2.5p)for the meter and got it going again so no more tickets to be accepted on the DLR.
Reminds me of our old friends the Gascoignes, Bob and Penny.

I moved to London in 1997 and one of the first things I ever saw on the Jubilee line was a Drag Queen, fully done up with make-up and a ball gown. Wearing a Vivienne Westwood crown. At lunchtime, on a Tuesday. Over the years, even that has slipped way down the “crazy stuff you see on the tube” rankings

Back in the 1990s I used to drive buses numbered in the "D"
series, D being for docklands of course. An old east end Jewish chap who had lived in the east end long before the redevelopment of the area used to be a regular passenger, sorry customer, of mine.
I asked him what he thought of the docklands light railway and he replied " well,it's alright for running up and down Brighton beach I suppose ".
This being a reference to Volkes Electric Railway that does indeed run along along the promenade at Brighton.
For anyone that's interested the buses I drove were operated by Kentish bus which had been London Country South East.
London Country had been split into geographical sections so as to be easier to sell off after deregulation of the bus industry. Kentish bus was absorbed by what is now Arriva.
I now work for Hackney Community Transport driving the N26 night bus from Trafalgar Square to Chingford.

The descriptive plural of the three railway stations with the same name in the district is the "Canary Wharf railway stations." Just like the descriptive plural of the eight railway stations on the peninsula is the "Isle of Dogs railway stations." Terribly sorry but the current English languages do not provide a shorter way.

Why Canarys and not Canaries?
Worked on security on the big pointy building on a floor that was being fitted out for some banking firm , we had an over weight Irish supervisor who was tyrant , when the lifts broke down he waited we took the stairs up about forty odd floors , it was party time feet up on desks brews all night music full blast and doing diddly squat knowing he couldn’t do anything about it as he was stuck in reception , another time when state street bank were moving in they were handing out handfuls of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had , one of the fitted book cases that ran from floor to ceiling had been pushed under a ceiling light and had been smouldering away for hours , found it before it burst into flames but it had burnt almost through the hard wood top with no sign of anything wrong on the under side , no smell no smoke nothing apart from the a tiny patch of blackening , think that was around the 37th floor , happy times , used to take a radio scanner to work on nights , the radio reception on the upper floors was unbelievable , signals coming in from all over the place.
Well I remember travelling to Canary wharf to sort a contract out, it was my first time on a train without a driver. Slightly unnerving but fun. Thanks.

(Big Ben ,to the uninitiated, is the name of the bell in the Elizabeth tower that used to be be called St.Stephens tower .
The bell was named after Benjamin Hall,the chief of works on the Palace of Westminster building project, the Palace of Westminster being the official name for The Houses of Parliament).
He had to hold his hands up to that when asked.

The Bob Hoskins movie The Long Good Friday gives you a good feel of what the area was like in 1980.

Not to mention a good insight into the U.S. corruption and back-handers that went on......albeit Lehman Brothers weren't mentioned directly!
Also several episodes of the Sweeney were filmed in the derelict Docklands, in the mid 70s
@@brettpalfrey4665 Some were indeed Brett. The shoot-out over at a derelict St. Katherines Dock was certainly more realistic than the terrible fake Aussie accents of Patrick Mower and George Layton. They were woeful!

I think it was the developers who lost their shirts. They went bust not long after it opened.
You definietley should consider doing a series on future stations, you can even come back to them a few years later with updates/progression and comparisons to what was initially planned Etc. Especially places like Euston. They're removing entire streets for its extension.

That's a very good idea. So obvious when you think about it (which means I didn't). And there is such a lot being removed for the new Euston too.
I still can’t quite believe the JLE is 21 years old. I remember watching cab view rides on the internet before it opened which must have been quite a thing in its self and only capable on the work PC.
That's about 10 years older than I would have guessed. In my head it was still quite new when the 2012 Olympics took place!
I remember working all hours to meet the opening deadline: my most memorable job was to test that the correct alarms were present when the floodgates at Canning Town Portal were opened and closed : I wonder if they have ever been needed for real? No-one would believe me that the end of the century wasn't until the end of the year 2000 and that we had another year to complete the job and hence earn another years worth of money: thanks Prince!!!
I used to work on the 47th floor of 1 Canada Square. Fantastic views over Greenwich and City Airport. When planes took off they appeared to be heading straight for the tower before veering away - and this was after 9-11, so scary!
Similar thing for the Gherkin - planes approaching City airport would fly straight towards the building, then turn 90°. Hated working in that building for many reasons, but that was the worst one.
It is correct to say that Canary Wharf was so named after it trade with the Canary Islands. But it is interesting that the Canary Islands name originated from Canis (Latin for dogs) and not the birds. Hence Canary Wharf on the Isle of Dogs is named after the Islands of Dogs

Great memories of the Jubilee line extension being built, I was one of the "Test Train Operators" going on to work at North Greenwich .
Believe me the inner workings of some of the Stations are unbelievable.

I'm usually not a big fan of modern architecture (just a matter of taste) but the stations in this video are all really beautiful. Kind of cyberpunk like.
This area conforms most to the futuristic predictions of my youth. Back in the mid sixties you could go on a pleasure boat trip round the mostly abandoned docks from St Catherine's dock and up to the Victoria and Albert docks, which I think still had a few working wharfs.
Some of my school mates dads were dockers. My good spar Sid Saunders house was a wildlife refuge for exotic animals his dad had brought home from work. Tree frogs, tarantulas and even a python.
The former dock area now looks like a sci-fi movie set to me now..

I used to work at The Parlour - a bar and restaurant right at the bottom of One Canada Square. One of my pet peeves is when people refer to that iconic building as ‘One Canary Wharf’! Drives me mad!
Every shot in this feels very nostalgic as I lived and worked there for 3 years. Would definitely consider moving back someday. It’s a nice area for morning runs.
Why move then?
My new job was too far to comfortably commute to so I moved to West London

I'd love to see you do a video on the development of Canary Wharf as a real estate development. I seem to recall through the 90s it went through multiple iterations with some really ugly financial shenanigans going on. We heard about it in Canada mostly because of the involvement of people like Paul Reichmann, and a few others. The financial web associated with the development is itself a fascinating tangle.

Great film, as always. I've managed to get lost amongst the Canary Wharves skyscrapers a few times.
The quay to starting Sunday off well is a new Jago video and a coffee.
I think it was an advert for Memorex cassettes that said "even the bad times sound good". Well, with Jago, even the sponsors' messages, which usually drive me up the wall, sound good.
I love the docklands museum (London's history fascinates me), used to go there sometimes when I lived in New Cross. Little wander through Crossrail Place roof garden whilst I was there. You could also complicate that list further with Crossharbour DLR station? Although it's not as close to Canary Wharf as those stations you mentioned - so realistically not where you'd be walking to if you were after a DLR service - but still what I consider walking distance.

I really like both the current stations, both are nice bits of architecture. I worked in a lego building in Heron Quay in the late 90s just before the Jubilee Line extension opened, and the DLR by then was really struggling to cope with the passenger numbers, and was ridiculously overcrowded!
I went to Canary Wharf tube a few years ago. I like collecting pictures of all the labyrinths (except West Acton and Victoria stations' labyrinths haven't reappeared after some work was carried out, and Ickenham's was also removed before the new footbridge started construction. And one of West Brompton's "no entry" signs from the one way system introduced recently was taped over the one there, so I don't have a clear pic of 127), but when I got to Canary Wharf, I couldn't see it. I had a big wander around, even walked all the way to the DLR station. But on my way back, I spotted it. You can see it, number 72/270, on this video at about 5:10 in, on a pillar on the left as you go down the escalators (which makes it face away from the ticket barriers, so not easily noticeable).
I haven't done Canary Wharf DLR yet, although as above I've visited on foot, and I've been through on my way between Greenwich and Limehouse (the only 2 DLR stations I've actually done so far).
I spent the whole episode thinking "will he say Canaries Wharf?" And you did not disappoint.

Back in my days working in Canary Wharf (and thank you for this trip down memory lane, I could see my old office in a couple of shots!) I used both the open-at-time-of-filming stations as part of my commute. I’d arrive in the morning on the Jubilee Line, then leave in the evening via the DLR. Happy days...

Ah One Canada Square, or the Torchwood Tower to those really in the know! :) So miss this place in a way, used to work at South Quay Plaza II during 2000-2005 so came in by DLR from Greenwich (later Gallions Reach) every day. Still miss the usual lunch choices: Sandwich Plus (both of them) between Crosshabour and South Quay and the awesome Tai Won Mein noodle bar outside Cutty Sark DLR. But my waistline doesn't miss them now! ;) Moved up north in 2005 and I'll never live in London again (born and bred in Greenwich) but yeah, do have a strangely fond affection for the Canary Wharf area, cold and unfeeling though it often is...

Great stuff again. I worked at Harbour Exchange Square and thus used (old) South Quay daily in the mid 90s and even now it seems remarkable how the area has built up from where it was, not least since that South Quay is now technically an abandoned station! We still use this as a through route to Greenwich via Heron Quays and I must admit I do occasionally struggle to appreciate the scale of change even since 1995 when I went for my interview! (God, that suit was terrible 😞).
I can recall when Heron Quays was of course open to the elements and pretty much Canary Wharf tube was just a big hole where they had dammed off the dock either side. It was amazing seeing that huge roof structure emerge rather like a big metal tiara bursting through the earth 🤣😅😅
It was still very much in its infancy as a place so it has been intriguing seeing it continue to develop 🤔👍🍻
Awesome. I lived nearby in 1999 and saw the opening of the JLE. Magic. Also, the weekend closures of the DLR so that they could extend the platforms for longer trains.
Good to see Crossrail is becoming another option around there. When I was contracting in Canary Wharf about 10 years ago the Jubilee could be less than stable, or could get ridiculously over crowded. Taking the DLR south to join up with other routes often got me around the blockage. Always good to have options. Thankfully I've been working almost exclusively from my own office since that time and I'm so thankful I no longer have to commute. Getting to the Jubilee gates at Waterloo some mornings only to see people being "held" was always an oh no moment.

I remember travelling on the DLR when it opened. Canary Wharf was closed. You'd stop at a station as discussed - and then move off again without the doors opening.

Canary Wharf has my favourite station exit, when you go up on those escalators and you look up to see all the immense concrete giants around the glass dome it makes you feel a certain way, especially if you've lived in a small town or small country like me, also the walk from canary wharf to the more central touristy areas along the Thames is a strong recommend from me
Thank you Jago for yet another great video. Canary Wharf is a place I visit regularly at weekends where I indulge in my hobby of street photography. I notice that one contributor this morning says they find the area to be soulless. I could not disagree more. Apart from the amazing architecture, I have found there are many things of interest to see and enjoy. One of the best is surely the Crossrail Place Sky Garden with its abundant plant life and the restaurants. On one of the lower levels of Crossrail Place, on the Mall, are a good number of diverse eating places too with outside seating and a small canal which also has lots of plants growing, while inside you will find at least three pianos you can use, one of them VERY transport-related. A modern covered bridge over a ground level area of water features and modern art leading from Crossrail Place to No 1 Canada Square is imaginative. After crossing the South Quay footbridge you can see a group of quite old French vehicles in a small square off Admirals Way selling a range of foods and further down the Le Sorelle floating restaurant. There are usually lots of weird and wonderful ships moored here too, from ultra-modern to old sailing vessels. Surrounding the Canary Wharf Underground stations is Jubilee Park, a pleasant park with trees, modern art and a delightful water feature, great for summer picnics. The fountain and waterfalls in Cabot Square are soothing to sit and watch as are the illuminated acrylic benches that change colour in another small park off Upper Bank Street. To the north of the area is St Peters Barge, London’s Floating Church and the Museum of Docklands. If you throw in all the other places to eat and the huge underground shopping mall I believe anyone visiting will be well entertained. So, soulless? No, not in my opinion.

Your rise to power is a sight to behold.
As part of the Jubilee line extension deal LUL moved a 1000 staff to the building (including the development team) just outside the the western Underground entrance. In preparation for this I spent a lot of time there which was not great: no Jubilee Line and the DLR (only to Tower Gateway) stopped at 9 p.m and did not operate at weekends and so far as I recall, no buses either. The only catering was from a market stall in the Canada Tower foyer area. The wind was pretty well unbroken as there were few buildings (although you got better views than today). l later took part in the escalator testing at CW - about 100 of us formed a crocodile and marched up down the rows of escalators to test their ability to cope with various loadings. We only had a 10 year lease and had to move out at the end of that time. The building developed a crack in the entrance hall after the IRA bomb went off at South Quay next to a shop I often visited.

I've only used the DLR station, and then only the once, but it's an imposing place. For some reason, it kind of reminds me of some of the German or Dutch suburban stations. It just doesn't look like a typical, suburban, London station.😁
I did not know that Star Wars fact. One to tell my friends later! I also didn't realise there were initially other plans for the area. It is interesting to imagine how different it could have been with residential housing and light industry instead of grey skyscrapers. I'm pleased you mentioned the many DLR stations! I've always found it odd that they have so many. I'm sure the trains don't bother picking up speed, there's only one or two train lengths between each one! I would like to know: Did they purposefully build that many, or did the development change so they had to add them? Thanks for a great video!
First time I was ever in the UK, this is where I left the underground man I was lost when I ended up in the mall ! especially after a 13 hour jet lag, the docklands museum is awesome ! I love the models and videos they have there !

The JLE's station at Canary Wharf is perhaps my favourite modern station on the entire Underground. Never fails to impress.

You could have mentioned; before Canary Wharf was built, the warehouses were used as storage for the props snd puppets of the satirical ITV series, Spitting Image.
Pedantically speaking, Canary Wharf was only the bit that No. 1 tower sits on. Canary Wharf estates ltd covered a wider area and estate agents with an eye to profit started calling anything on the Isle of Dogs "Canary Wharf". The Council then decided to rename one of the wards Canary Wharf.
Early London marathons ran around there show the change. It was easy to shut a road when no one used them, a specially on a Sunday morning.
Yes, I did the marathon in 1989 and the area was nearly empty. I appreciated the St John's volunteers who cheered us on because, for some way, there was nobody else.

Seattle, WA has gone through drastic changes over the past 10 years. Like Canary Island the city planners had visions of new buildings and housing on the north side of town known as South Lake Union (SLU). The building of locks in Ballard slowing things to the Puget Sound and the advent of container ships doomed the SLU water front decades ago. By 1990 the SLU area had become empty warehouses, non functioning factories, decaying docks, unused rail and a small smattering of 20 or so tiny houses built in the 1890's &1910's. The planners envisioned a street car with 3 story apartment blocks, office buildings, and a small retail area. The docks would become a park and Museum of History and Industry (MOHI) for seattle. They spent most of the 90's upgrading sewer, electric, gas, putting all that underground and doing industrial manufacturing environmental clean up. Luckily they over built that infrastructure beyond what was needed just in case. By 2000 a couple of companies called Amazon and Microsoft had grown and made a different proposal. The height limit was lifted to as high as the Federal Aviation Administration would allow. Now we have the MOHI and park, next are several 4 to 6 story apartment blocks with retail, medical and offices on there first floor. Mixed in are 6 to 15 story work buildings for computer programmers. Then we have an area the planners never imagined in there wildest dreams. We have thirty five buildings 25 to 46 stories high all built in the past 8 years covered in glass with an average of 5 more built a year. Some are office buildings but most are housing. Yes with a street car running right down a central road from downtown to the park. It has become way more than the planners dreamed and they are very pleased. I live on the edge of it all in the last house left. Built in 1896 I live in a two story victorian style house surrounded by glass and plastic. One neighbor is a 6 story apartment complex occupying almost the entire block. Another neighbor is a 46 story condominium casting a shadow on me most of the day. The businessmen and programmers look at me funny when I sit in a lawn chair on my front wooden deck reading a book as the paint peals off my house and the gingerbread trim hangs sideways.
5:23 The weirdest thing I saw was a Dalek stuck on a tram rail in Nottingham. A guy was taking it to the Council House. Maybe they'd been rehoused without an access ramp maybe even it was true love. None of my business. It could have been anything from a civil dispute to a civil partnership. I left them to it ( after following them and getting a few photos ).

Fairly sure the DLR Canary Wharf station is the only one that could use the Barcelona system where passengers disembark on one side and embark on the other. There's a video of someone who managed to cross all the platforms without a pause using well timed trains.

Used to go down to Canary Wharf twice a week for many years but never once used the main entrance. Came in on the dlr from bank and left on the jubilee line but entered via the shopping centre entrance near the back
My employer at the time, Barclays, only moved into Canary Wharf after having signed the contract in early Sep 2001 and they couldn’t get out of the contract - the building had to be redesigned to withstand a plane crash
