  • There are a million different flies - how to pick the right one - how to put a good selection together? My tip is to pick 18 flies for clear days, 18 for cloudy, 18 night flies, 12 for flooded conditions + a few dries and skaters. A nice little selection of about 70 flies that will cover all your needs! Make sure to adjust the sizes to the conditions - check it out!

Sound advice I would say size and color are important in all fly fishing situations. Other factors as surfskigit points out are also things to consider . That’s what make fishing fun .

Fish will strike anything either it’s a indicator to a fly or a metal spun simply because it’s the only way they actually can determine if it’s a food source, also they use their mouth over potencial competitors that fight for best space that the current and temperature is more friendly to store energy for the long journey ahead, other reason, a self defense trigger mechanisms to protect his breeding grounds, we all know it, all is based on a common principles of nature, only the stronger ones will survive to have better chances to produce the genetic best generations of new breeders.
Is not to complicated, we like to pretend fishing is an art so only few with enough spare time a week to be in the water can learn the obvious skills faster and better than the rest who can’t because they are working 40 hrs a week, and that’s it makes it hard to simply catch a beautiful fish.

Agreed, but there is art in tying the fly, presenting it and appreciating the 'art' nature lays before you when you are fishing. However much time we get to fish - in my case, not enough.

      Agreed
It’s all about making the fish open his mouth, and that’s one part of the entire picture, find it, catching and repeated, it’s the biggest challenge.
It’s art form since the man start to figure out how to make hooks from a bone, and tying probably natural plants fibers to it.
Will continue to be art even with modern synthetic materials and new software that will give us the right place and amount of different materials we should have to properly take the best from the actual hook size, probably deep, current speed and casting angle variables ...etc, still it’s only the fish who always be the ultimate test, thanks to the fishing goods hope it will be that way for ever 👽

yes the fly is for sure important, but I think good technique is the most important. I can give a new fisherman a box of the best flies but they won't help him much. on the other hand You can have a very bad fly (way too big and very wrong colour) yet still find takers if you have the perfect depth, fly angle, and speed. Showing the wrong fly in perfect style to many fish you'll get a rule breaker or anger take.. I often find success fishing big large colourful flies in clear, low water. i like tying big complex flies, so it makes me most happy, confident etc to fish them. More people should try this and they'll find ''wrong'' flies still are pretty good. just not perfect. This means you can fish that cool, large, spring in flames fly you tied in summer season....
After enjoyment comes things the stream bottom colour, the sky colour ,current, water temps, water clarity, etc

I very seldom do this - there is a risk that a big fish will be lost by the second fly being snagged..

Is it normal to kill the fish in this part of the world or is catch and release more common?
