I love Hilarie Burton and She is from One Tree Hill which means I can rewatch it from the very beginning again as I can’t even stop thinking about her to eat his words. 💋❤️😍❤️

Any cops, or experts on polygraphs, in here?? Can you really beat a lie-detector by stabbing a push-pin into your finger?? How would that tweak the machine?? Just curious...

Okay, so I'm not an expert, but I did a little reading and the theory goes as such:
The machines read physiological signs off people, signs such as heart rate and perspiration. The idea is that when you lie, the stress/anxiety causes a spike in heart rate and sometimes causes you to sweat, etc.
During the test, the examiner will establish a baseline in which the first few questions in which they measure heart rate when you're lying and when you're telling the truth.
So, when Neal is secretly hurting himself as he answers the questions, he's invalidating the baseline so all his answers look the same.
The problem is, in real life, polygraph tests can be unreliable in themselves, people who don't have these symptoms of anxiety when lying, people like psychopaths and such make it hard to identify lies because they don't care. And signs like nervousness causing increased heart rate could simply be due to the stress of being under pressure. So they're not always perfectly accurate.
But it makes for a cool scene, having the protagonist beat the lie detector test.

The show has a goof there.. Generally, when you sting yourself with a prick, your stress increases. So you prick yourself when you tell the truth as the baseline so that the baseline truth stress is high. When you are lying, you should not prick yourself so that the stress in your voice due to lying matches the stress due to pricking..

@@tejajs7261 it's a goof but only because you know the long explanation above. The viewers don't have that advantage so they may have just put it in to show viewers quickly that neal did tamper with the results, even though not 100 percent accurate to real life. Sort of like driving in old movies, yiu see them oversteering the wheel but if you did that in real life you would drive in a zig zag!

@@tejajs7261 no because he pricked himself on the base line - there's no-one reading the results to see what his heart-rate is etc, the machine just says if it is the same as his baseline response, which it will be because he is pricking himself.
