No he has three jobs. Everyone has a side job they do when not Gym Battling, Larry works an Office Job. He’s a Salaryman, a Gym Leader and an Elite Four Member. No wonder he’s so miserable
I’d imagine that the money in gyms and the Elite Four doesn’t come from their personal pockets, moreso it comes from a state fund. It’s their job to lose, at least a fair amount of the time. They’re a test of strength for trainers, and if the trainer is strong enough, then they’re supposed to be beaten. Maybe it does come from their pockets, which would incentivise them to give it their all, but I doubt it?
@benjamincooper358 well he is also mentioned about the him footing the bill at the restaurant (after inviting thr challenger for lunch/dinner), so he still losing money durning lunch or dinner time. Since he paid for food for him and the challenger. But the LP system is owned by the league, so what preventing them from giving LP than money? Since its a official currency.
It's also funny when you notice that his Pokémon have a theme outside of his previous ace Think about it Tropical palm Exotic birds Overworked everyday
In retrospect, it would’ve been even better if his final Pokemon was still Starraptor, but with Tera Flying this time. After all, he DOES spend all that time at the restaurant in Medali that changes Tera types…
I think only the Elite Four and the current Top Champion of Paldea can use them. Think of them as a symbol of their Status When he is at work, or at the Medali Gym, he is not acting in his capacity as an Elite 4, so he doesn't use them
Other fun fact: he was wearing a cloud-print tie the whole time, as well as notches on his jacket lapels that makes them look like wings, so you could’ve guessed the flying type twist as early as first meeting him
For SOME reason, something tells me Geeta doesn't pay Larry enough. He works to the bone and somehow is managing a living. This man needs a long, distant vacation.
imagine, since the test was first, imagine if Pokemon programmed in the game that the 3rd Elite Four member could be any of the gym leaders based on your test answer and we never found out
I literally thought that's what they had done because I happened to answer that Larry gave me the most trouble as a gym battle (Don't ask lol) And Rika was like "....interesting"
I remember I chose Larry as well in the 'test' just because I liked him. Then he showed up and my first thought was 'IS THIS BECAUSE I CHOSE HIM?!' which would've been cool. But I'm happy with it just being Larry.
Larry's image is based on the businessman in Japan, In some Japanese companies, The bosses will forced their employees works overtime with no extra payments, Or setting their wages extremely low just enough for them to survive, These employees like Larry are called "Shachiku" (社畜, Literally "Company livestocks" or "Wage slaves", Because they are treated just like a livestock), This is why he always looks exhausted and very tired, When those employees finally collapsed, those companies are just fired them because they are no use for them (They just treated them like a depleted disposable batteries, And toss them away)... This is why some players hate Geeta, They think Geeta treated Larry in the same way... Fun facts: In the Pokemon universe, There used a company like above, Called "Greater Mauville Holdings" located in Hoenn Region, Gym leader Wattson was once this company's manager, But when he discovered the company's project will cause local ecological catastrophe, He forced ceased the project, After failed competition to their rival "Devon Corporation", This company finally collapsed and bankrupted...
Not surprised Larry spoke of wind. Many of the wind based attacks in this game are Flying type. There are exceptions, of course. Heck, I didn't realize Heat Wave was a wind attack until Shiftry was able to be immune to it because it also had Wind Power. He's still the best Normal Type Master in the series. Still surprised this magnificent bastard finally beat out Norman, but he more than earned it.
Funny enough, in the DLC it's revealed that Larry just does this to himself, outright refusing to go on a vacation, unless it's a work related trip.(when Larry says this, he's talking with Geeta in the Indigo Disk DLC, who's offering him am all-expenses paid vacation to Kalos, then changes it to a 'work trip' after he says it.)
You'd think that since he's quite big now RT would be seen in more clips and compilations. I genuinely think this is the first time I'm seeing him in one
The thing I like about his second encounter is that some people will instinctively put a fighting type first, since that’s the only type super effective against normal, only to then be at a disadvantage since he has flying types this time around
Gonna be honest, when I did my blind playthrough of this game, I thought it was going to be whatever you said was the gym leader you thought was the hardest in the E4 quiz when you first enter, because I chose Larry for that
Same, saw a clip where a vtuber picked larry so i was excited to see how they were gonna upgrade each of the gym leaders if you picked them. I was excited since i picked Grusha.
I love the reactions and commentary from BornLosersGaming. They're probably my favorite clip in this compilation. I'm gonna subscribe purely because of that charisma.
Not many people caught onto Larry's second typing hinted in his gym battle. The fact his Staraptor's his Ace Pokemon, and his tie having a pale light blue color with cloud designs, matching the Flying type.
Larry being so normal is even referenced by his Pokéball throw. Everyone has like an over the top throwing motion. Larry's is an actual Japanese pitcher's (specifically Aoyagi of the Hanshin Tigers) pitching motion.
My memory of fighting the elite 4 is blurry, but i think i remember bringing in lots of fighting, tailor making the team for larry Am i the only one who thinks they made him flying because flying is super effective against fighting and gamefreak knew there was a chance you'd be baited into using fighting???? Cause i cannot find anyone else making this connection..
Yes but also flying is one of the most common type Pokémon, I think. There so much regional bird and most can be found on the first route of each game like normal type.
I really wish that they'd revised Larry's team to be a bit more competitively viable. Open with Staraptor, but then follow it up with either Oricorio if you're using an Electric or Fire type, and Skarmory if you're using anything else, then follow with Altaria and finally the Flamingo.
PlaysReact, I admire your commitment to putting together so many clips, especially because Pokemon playthroughs are long, but you really teased us by cutting most of them off before we get to see Rika shout at Hassel xD I love that moment. Larry is amazing, and I want to give him baked goods, and vouchers for naps.
you are missing sakamata cloe. (i think that was the one.) poor thing was traumatized from the gym. i know you focus on english, but it doesnt get funner.
Watching a clip of her vs larry had me convinced you decided the third member based on which one you said you had the most trouble with. I was excited, and subsequently dissapointed, to see how Grusha was gonna get buffed when i picked him.
It's too bad you didn't include Chloe Sakamoto's reaction. She absolutely LOSES it when he shows himself due to how poorly her Medali gym challenge went; it's utterly hilarious. 😂
I ran mono fighting type for my Violet playthrough, and yet Larry was the only gym leader that clapped me. In my defense, normal tera Staraptor Facades arent anything to sneeze at. So when i saw him at E4, I went "normal types, I'm ready for ya" and my dude went "have all these birbs."
Not exactly Uncommon for the Normal Type Gym Leader to be the one to be the most challenging. People underestimate Normal Types so much for being the "Boring" type, and then act surprised when they get clapped by one. Whitney for Johto, Norman for Hoenn, Lenora for Unova, and now Larry for Paldea.
Was Larry really that hard? Everyone I’ve seen has cried in Despair about fighting against Larry here. I think I actually had more struggles with Iono because of the direction I went. I can’t remember if I lost to him. Maybe I did once but other than that I’m not sure I lost. My memory is pretty bad tho so who knows
Larry is one of the few who takes advantage of Terrastalize's power buffing if you keep the same type his Staraptor hard punishes trying to stat condition it and on the second round he curve balls with flying types when you were probably throwing a Fighting first.
Ohhh... Yeah, right... I totally didn't accidentally overlevel myself for Iono. Hahahaha... Oh well, I get the feeling that that'll probably change soon.
I guess getting my Pokémon to level 36+ was probably a dumb idea when it comes to having any kind of challenge... I mean, plowing through the opponent's team is pretty fun in it's own right. Eh, maybe I'll temporarily change out some of my stronger team members for the fourth gym so that I'm not TOO overleveled. Definitely gonna change out my starter for that gym since it's level 38 or something like that (Even if it's super effective against water). Besides, using other Pokémon is pretty fun. Eh, I'll check what Pokémon I have in my boxes tommorow.
“Does he really need 3 jobs?”
Larry has 2 jobs where he loses money when he loses. Not exactly profitable.
No he has three jobs. Everyone has a side job they do when not Gym Battling, Larry works an Office Job. He’s a Salaryman, a Gym Leader and an Elite Four Member. No wonder he’s so miserable
@Broomer52 "has two jobs *where he loses money"* hence why he needs the third

Think about it

Also, what type would a challenger likely load up their team with if they expect a rematch with the *Normal-type* Gym Leader?

Larry deserves a promotion and a vacation for being both a Gym leader, Elite 4 member, and Office worker
