It took me a second to realize that the date on this cover letter example is actually the same date and today (except the year obviously). I’m working on my cover letter right now and this really through me for a loop 😂
Cover letters are literally a load of shit, they don't provide any relevant information that isn't already in the resume and they never get read anyway. The only places that I've gotten jobs I've never provided cover letters, only providing a resume, yet I've been knocked back so many times when I HAVE given a cover letter. and I don't want a job yet I JUST TURNED. Like I don't even have background or experience. I had to put babysitting and middle school education like what.
Charlotte, I’m thrilled you’re teacher is having you write a cover letter. Although you’re not a professional, it’s still such a good thing to do. Think about accomplishments you’ve during school.
Charlotte McNamara it’s just to ready you for when you have to. So that way when ever your time come to, write a cover letter and a resume you don’t struggle.
I was never given this kind of help or training at school. I'm a lot older than you, I've never been good at CV's, interviewing and all that's involved. I'm now out of work and looking for a job and I'm completely lost as to what to do. You've got a head start.
Might be a silly question but how do you go about finding the name of the hiring manager if they're not listed on the company website? Is it appropriate to call the company and ask who to address the letter to?
In my career cover letters are still an essential part of the application process. They are quite detailed as you are always required to respond to the selection criteria. Always required to write 3-4 pages as that is usually how much the employer asks for.
Thanks for your help! The thing I struggle with is not really having much to offer a company. I am studying and seeking positions in Environmental Science, but don't have any related work experience. What problem can I solve for them? What accomplishment can I tout?
O my goodness, Heather, you are so engaging. Just your personality alone was what kept me watching the video; I hope that one day I can find that. Well done, love the information and I learned some valuable Cover letter tips, but also the dissemination of information. Quick question - how much educational information do you suggest providing in a cover letter or resume?
Thank you for the in depth and practical trainings. Also we would be better focusing on our strengths at work than working on something we are not good at. I highly recommend everyone to understand what's natural strengths for them and choose to work in the job that brings more meaning and satisfactions.
1. Focus on the format - .75-1 inch margin; same font size and style as resume. Four paragraphs. Try to find name of hiring manager. 2. Spark Interest. What interests you and why you want to work there. Makes your letter stand out. Emphasize ties/referrals. 3. Value Proposition. Show how your skills can help the company. Share a story around an accomplishment. 4. Include a Call to Action.
Thank you for this. What advice can you provide for providing cover letters when applying for jobs online though? Oftentimes, the company offering the job has online forms that simply require for fields to be populated with info, i.e. Name, Address, Phone, etc., and drop-down menus where you simply select an option such as "yes" or "no", then a field to type a cover letter. In those instances, an applicant has no control over formatting, font options, etc..
mreoski Applicant Tracking System. It’s the computer software HR uses that’s responsible for scanning your electronic resume and finding the relevant keywords. It determines IF a human (like the HR Manager) will read your resume AT ALL. (Sad, but true.)
Thanks for this great video! My students just had the task to watch it and takes notes - it fits perfectly into our present topic. Since we're all on video conferencing (Corona rules), this is a valuable expansion (including native speaker English) for my lesson plan.
Hi I am student who will be graduating soon. I have a question. Should I put the most relevant experience that's been a few years ago or should I put the most recent work experience that is not much related to the work by showing transferable skills ?
Should scholarship candidacy & attending its pre- departure orientation workshops be referred to in resume & cover letter or the attendance certificate will do?
Heather, I have a Master's degree in Forensic Sciences and specialised in investigation, but my work experience is in a completely different fields. I'm trying to apply for an entry level jobs. How can I write a cover letter based on my educational background? I'm having a hard time to put it all together.
@Ilaha Abdulla You want to first begin with a compelling attention-grabber then you want to make a list of your many skills, talents, and experiences that can be written as transferable skills. I’ve discussed 4 cover letter attention-grabbers on my channel.
Just a general question. I have worked as a customer service representative for 2 years and I’ve done mostly co-op during high school. I’d like to know how can I make a interesting introduction based on this? I have 0 experience with Human Resource field. My plan is to go to college to get my degree in Human Resources but how exactly can I explain this complicated issue in my cover letter? I’m just confused at this point and lost and don’t know what to do.
This was a great video. I enjoyed learning the purpose of a cover letter and tips on focusing on the format, sparking interest, creating engagement and a call to action. These were key points that stood out to me because, this is what makes the cover letter interesting and outstanding. It’s like creating your own story and selling it in your cover letter. This is awesome!
This. I end up with a rambling mess the more personal I try to make it, failing to get across the main relevant skills and traits. I know theoretically what a cover letter should say, but need to work on being succinct.
@@ProfessorHeatherAustin Wait, but what if it doesn't require one, but it also doesn't specifically state not to upload a cover letter? Should we still not send one?
@@joshuasamuel2122 If it doesn’t request one I usually send one along anyway. It’s a nice way to stand out from the others and is your opportunity to show more of your personality through it rather than just all the facts stated on your resume if that makes sense?! However if it specifically states a cover letter isn’t necessary I won’t send one but if there’s no mention I just attach one anyway. Hopefully this helps!
allen Thompson Any will work since it shows you did your homework and found a name. Most applicants won’t! HR Manager would be the best choice, though.
Is it advisable to place a visual timeline of an individual's skill(relative to the job opening) and how it grows over the years in a cover letter? Instead of wordy approach in explaining value propositions?
Very good and informative video on the basics of understanding a cover letter.. So you suggest any ideas for applying to multiple businesses that are almost in no relations. Example a dispesay or just a store that may not like mmj. Should I create 2 especially w that job history when I don't need normal stores knowing my personal info
Great video, thank you for the upload! Could you tell me what a “voice introduction to a cover letter” is? An employer is requesting one and I’ve never had to include a voice recording to supplement a cover letter. Thank you for your help.
@Erika Flores Sounds like you need to record the equivalent of an attention-grabber for a cover letter. I’ve discussed 4 cover letter attention-grabbers on my channel.

Quick question - how much educational information do you suggest providing in a cover letter or resume?
This is great advice, Heather. I am looking to record a podcast episode about cover letters. You would be a great guest.
Thanks Jim! So glad you enjoyed the episode. Who is your audience?
GOOD EXPERIANCE
👍
Thank you for the in depth and practical trainings. Also we would be better focusing on our strengths at work than working on something we are not good at. I highly recommend everyone to understand what's natural strengths for them and choose to work in the job that brings more meaning and satisfactions.

So great video! I always wait for your new video about applying job. This really helps for students like me.
Hi there! Thanks for watching. So happy to hear you look forward to my weekly videos. What type of position are you looking for?
Thank you.
My L&J teacher told us to write an E-portfolio so i'm here
Times have changed: Is it still necessary to include the full address (and all that jazz) of the company at the top of the cover letter?
What if I can't find the hiring official's name? Who should I address the cover letter to in the address section before the introduction?
Great question Kelsey. Address the letter to Dear Hiring Manager.
Great tips!
I loved the video. It was very informative and helpful. Thank you for sharing the information.
Jermaine Burns you’re very welcome. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for doing this!
Thanks for the outline! This is great.
What do you include on your cover letter when you are genuinely under-accomplished and have little to offer
personality, eagerness, and dedication to the work. Also a willingness to learn.
Remember to use keywords. Most ATS won’t look at your cover letter if you don’t have keywords.
Tanya’s Tales : what does the acronym ATS stand for?
mreoski Applicant Tracking System. It’s the computer software HR uses that’s responsible for scanning your electronic resume and finding the relevant keywords. It determines IF a human (like the HR Manager) will read your resume AT ALL. (Sad, but true.)
Tanya’s Tales Thank you for clarifying.
Thanks for this great video! My students just had the task to watch it and takes notes - it fits perfectly into our present topic. Since we're all on video conferencing (Corona rules), this is a valuable expansion (including native speaker English) for my lesson plan.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for sharing this will your students.

Hi
I am student who will be graduating soon. I have a question.
Should I put the most relevant experience that's been a few years ago or should I put the most recent work experience that is not much related to the work by showing transferable skills ?
Great question. Put a combination of both.
Thank you for explaining the purpose of a cover letter
The hardest part is starting! haha
Get to your point!
I’m applying to work on the set of good omens, thank you for this!
Yeah! Good luck!

Great Video
Just a general question. I have worked as a customer service representative for 2 years and I’ve done mostly co-op during high school. I’d like to know how can I make a interesting introduction based on this? I have 0 experience with Human Resource field. My plan is to go to college to get my degree in Human Resources but how exactly can I explain this complicated issue in my cover letter? I’m just confused at this point and lost and don’t know what to do.
I loved it... Thanzs a lot...
Thank you for helping!
You are very welcome!

Professor, what font are you using in your cover letter? It look neat. Thanks.

Thank you sister
kilo g hi there! Are you currently writing a cover letter?
I think my biggest thing is I am always questioning if it's good enough. How do I know if I did it right or not?
Struggling with how to fit all the necessary information in four paragraphs. A skill of a concise writing is needed.
Haha! I know what you mean. Just focus on what's important for your potential employer to know about you. :)
This. I end up with a rambling mess the more personal I try to make it, failing to get across the main relevant skills and traits. I know theoretically what a cover letter should say, but need to work on being succinct.
To Clarify: If the job application does not require a cover then I should not submit one. Correct?
Correct! Don't submit one if it says not to submit one.
@@josiej89 That makes sense, thanks.
Great tips! Is it also acceptable to use “Dear Sir or Madam” instead of “Dear hiring official”?
Great question Frank! I would stick to Dear Hiring Manager if you can’t find their name.
allen Thompson Any will work since it shows you did your homework and found a name. Most applicants won’t! HR Manager would be the best choice, though.
Is it advisable to place a visual timeline of an individual's skill(relative to the job opening) and how it grows over the years in a cover letter?
Instead of wordy approach in explaining value propositions?
ruclips.net/video/OomRZRBZDf8/видео.html
My only thing is... it's very annoying and time consuming to build these for each company then get declined
Very good and informative video on the basics of understanding a cover letter.. So you suggest any ideas for applying to multiple businesses that are almost in no relations. Example a dispesay or just a store that may not like mmj. Should I create 2 especially w that job history when I don't need normal stores knowing my personal info
I am a Bookkeeping Student with no experience what is your advice to me ? also can you help me ? thank you
Great video, thank you for the upload!

This is an exceptional lesson! Thanks! I feel ready to tackle my cover letters!
Is there a template for the cover letter that would go with the style of the resume template? Loved using your resume template but would like to be able to create a cover letter to go with it
So happy you've found success with the resume template. There is a link to the Career Advancement Toolkit in the description below the video. The toolkit has a cover letter template and example + dozens of other templates and some really good video lessons. Let me know if you have any questions.
When they don't mention a cover letter is that a negative or should we send it either way?
