- UP 844 on the 1st Run of 2017 in preparation for next week's. "Boise Turn Special" trip to Idaho during April 18-28, 2017 This test run to Greeley, Colorado was on April 10, 2017. This video starts with UP844 blasting into Greeley just after 2, left the wye about 3, and then catch her leaving Greeley after 3 pm, final clip at Nunn, Colorado charging back to Cheyenne, Wyoming. Next Stop Idaho & points west! For more info on this historic trip please see www.up.com/abo...
Thanks for watching.
Steam. Just doesn't get any better than this. Grandpa worked in the shops in Cheyenne. Dad worked in the mail cars. The sound of steam thrills me and makes me breathe a bit funny...
5:30 at Bellmore Farms - It is interesting, for lack of a better word, to see the age of steam passing through what could be a scene from anytime and as the train moves through the scene there is, for a second something not quite right and then you see it...the drone, hanging in mid-air. It provides a nice counterpoint that you just can't get watching the train pass modern vehicles. It's almost lyrical.
I want to compliment you all, first of all for publishing these pieces of work and second, for the amazing clarity of the picture.
Thank you very much.
I have tears of joy in my eyes! Thanks for posting! We hope to catch her today along the Snake River at Glenns Ferry, Idaho.
You guys did a sweet job on the 844 it look better then new.
844 IS BACK, LOUDER AND PROUDER THAN EVER!
I think it's now faster too!
SteamUP the steam exhaust is looking cleaner too. all of us here in idaho thank all of the UP steam crew for considering doing this excursion and cant wait to see you all around hammit, id climbing the grade
Fantastic! And the combination with the drone gives us a new perspective and interesting anacromy; 21th century technology capturing 19th century technology. Wonderful.
Absolutely fantastic drone shots you got of 844 and the consist. Very well done.
At 2:30 I thought they were dragging 2760 in dynamic braking making that buzzing sound. Then I realized it was the drone making the noise!
I want to see them triple head 844 3985 4014 together that would make a lot of rail fans dreams come true
Personally my favorite. So cool. Nothing beats a steam locomotive on the move. Love the big driving wheels on the 844.
Mine, too!
I luve it!
flying close to the power lines, brave man lol. nice videos
Nice splitscreen with the drone. Sounded like a herd of bees going by though. Great shots! Cheers, Dan
You know how honored it is to operate a historical steam locomotive??!! Wow!!!!! I'm pretty sure they are a railfan.
That was some nice Break-In Run!
" बहुत ही सुंदर फिल्माया गया है ये नजारा " " Beautiful Video Great Work Thanks " !!
SO SWEET, and that's all there is to say
It's a test run...the diesel is there for dynamic brakes in order so simulate a heavier train and make the engine work harder without having to handle many cars.
Zach Pumphery more good info thanks
The Caboose and the diesel will be dropped off at steam shop before it 844 leaves for Boise. Going with the Train on this time are the city of Salina and executive coach Challenger 844 will pick up the rest of the train along the way. Texas Eagle and the Ed Harriman are in Pocatello right now as part of operation lifesaver they will be picked up first and the rest of the train will be picked up in Boise before she heads to Ogden
Cool. • Cheers from The Detroit & Mackinac Railway 🚂
Keep the Steam Up!
I assume the diesel is "just in case" and to provide electrical power for the cars?
844 certainly has enough power and breaking ability to handle that short train.
Great to see her underway again!
Bill rouleau The second car from the diesel is a generator car I think? The diesel is there to help #844 if she breaks down and to help using her dynamic brakes if needed. Appart from that its there to enjoy the ride.
That is incorrect the diesel is used for dynamic braking Generator Car Howard Fogg is used to supply power to the train and also to power up the steam locomotive when it is shut down.
That is correct see my comment above.
Thanks for the correction.
Great, to find out she was in Greely before I arrived was about as much fun as being in Colorado when she was in Boise. Nice videos though.
awesome video. sweet.
You guys did a great job on the 844 it looks better then new! I just wish you didn't have to drag that Diesel around with you. Its nice see a old kaboos to.
That guy who just drove past 844 has no respect for the age of steam
See you on Friday #844 my old friend.
I really miss when UP #844 still has it's red mars light mounted above the head lamp. What happened to engine #844's red mars light?
0:18 I've never seen a UP caboose without the roof extending over the platforms!
Great video! Is 3985 getting a rebuild or something because she has not run in years?
Metra160 UP is currently focused on restoring 4014. Once he's all done, They're gonna get started on 3985's mandatory 15 year inspection
Thanks for the info!
Yes but it is on hold until Big Boy leaves the shop in a year. Right now they have disassembled Big Boy down to the boiler and they are currently in the process of dismantling the boiler for repairs. While the boiler work is going on they will disassemble both engine units and replace all of the springs. The leaf springs will have to be built by hand because no manufacturer sells that model anymore coil springs are easier to get because they can be easily made by casting Ed Dickens can call many of the steam preservation groups around the world for parts and Wasatch is just across the yard if they need any large castings
Aaron Peavler/Geomodelrailroader Railroad Photography Thanks for the info!
Metra160 indeed
Look at how slow and graceful that beautiful locomotive is, you don't get that with a ge locomotive especially if it has a knorr brake brake on it. Some great filming and run bys though.
The diesel electric needs to go away. Let the 844 run on her own!
stfu
It's only there for Dynamic braking and Emergency power IF needed, otherwise its always at idle and not providing power. She IS running on her own
I hope she gets her Mars Light back soon
Living Legend No. 844 is not getting it back!, The engine was restored to original condition and in 1944 844 did not have it so 2013 was the last time you will ever see it.
One of the staff members said she'd be getting it back. I found out the reason why they removed it is cause the bolts keeping it in came loose.
that was in 2013 844 is not getting it back as much as people want it its never going to happen because headquarters
wants it original
Matthew Love Um dude. 844 IS getting it's mars light back. Don't spread false information. A UP employee told me THIS YEAR.
Is it just me or is 844's smokebox darker than before?
They replaced the smokebox a year ago watch the steam shop blog for 2016
I hope you make more videos soon
Hopefully the 18th to Wamsutter & thanks for watching
I was at school that day then I missed it.
To bad it hasn't run for while. 😊
does it have a new bell or is it me
just freshly polished probably
UP 844 got re-painted before this break in run
I wish they would turn her loose she could easy pull 100 or at least an amtrak train, I dont know 80 is fast but she is infact a highspeed engine made to pull it hard and fast, I just wish once in a blue moon we could see a steamer in america push the spectrum on some of the western track or though the fast corridor that used to be on the ohio and indiana boarder, like the pennsy race track from van wert to fort wayne, or the nyc from butler indiana, to toledo ohio, I mean not the whole way but at least 10 miles across the boarder to really open an engine up, though the track problably would not handle it, and ever since dismal swamp there is a 40 mph speed restriction on steamers on ns, it sucks because we have seen what the area is capable of producing in speed in decades past.
What happened to Union Pacific's long excursion trains?
Kool Friend! This is only a test run, the long trains will be back this year
Jim Subka thx for the info
Is that an extra tender just ahead of the diesel? Possibly for extra water?
Allen Williams yes it is for extra water👌🏻
See you in Poky in a couple of days!
After that Gooding and Bliss Idaho home to me I will be ready for her.
what the hick they do to that bay window caboose ?
On the end of it, was that considered a caboose???????
Yes it was, they were replaced by "EOTD" End of Train Device during the late 80's
Thinking that this EOTD is not like the old standard caboose from the old days right????
In a bay window caboose, the crew monitoring the train sits in the
middle of the car in a section of wall that projects from the side of
the caboose. The windows set into these extended walls resemble
architectural bay windows, so the caboose type is called a bay window caboose. This type afforded a better view of the side of the train and eliminated the falling hazard of the cupola It is thought to have first been used on the Akron, Canton and Youngstown Railroad in 1923, but is particularly associated with the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, which built all of its cabooses in this design starting from an experimental model in 1930. The bay window gained favor with many railroads because it eliminated the need for additional clearances in
tunnels and overpasses. On the West Coast, the Milwaukee Road and the Northern Pacific Railway used these cars, converting over 900 roof top cabooses to bay windows in the late 1930s.[4] Milwaukee Road rib-side bay window cabooses are preserved at New Lisbon, Wisconsin, the Illinois Railway Museum, the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad and Cedarburg, Wisconsin, among other places. The Western Pacific Railroad was an early adopter of the type, building their own bay window cars
starting in 1942 and acquiring this style exclusively from then on. Many
other roads operated this type, including the Southern Pacific Railroad, St. Louis - San Francisco Railway, Katy Railroad, Kansas City Southern Railway, the Southern Railway, and the New York Central Railroad.
SteamUP I like the bay window caboose! Thanks for sharing the update on UP844, she is looking beautiful!
Why are they pulling a Diesel Locomotive?
holy crap for dynamic brakes
Hey, chill, he didn't know, why else would he ask?
Up 844 going to boise turn special
Where's her Mars Light?
they took it off cause her bolts kept getting loose
is the diesel unit , just in case ?
I always wondered about that too. Also, if it is "helping" how do the two trains communicate throttle and braking?
I've seen in several videos where the 844 is just being pushed by the helper. Now rather there was a It could be from a mechanical problem or the 844 didn't have enough power.
The diesel is there for a couple of reasons, just in case being one of them, there is a control stand in the 844 were they can control the diesel from the head end [in some of the videos you can see the "jumper cable" on the back of the tender] it is also so there to keep the insurance people happy, to use the dynamic braking system if the need be
railsam good point ! thanks .
as far as I understand from communicating with the local steam guys here in Portland, they have to have the diesel not only for insurance but for the modern rail traffic communication systems. She couldn't be on any mainline tracks if they couldn't track her the same way as a modern loco. At least that it the way it is with UP and the 4449
Highball UP 844!
Indeed
The quad motor noise is annoying. Sounds like a big mosquito.
