A Valued Servant

Often enough when we hear of slavery in ancient Rome, we compare it to the American South. To be sure, slavery isn’t right, but we need to make sure we’re thinking of it the right way. Slaves in households were often treated like family. They were cared for. In many ways, it was better to be a household slave than it was to be a poor free person! Here, we get an example of that, as a master is doing everything he can to help his servant. And we find out shortly that this man is more unique than we might expect…
