He was stuck on limited supply with no connections, losing more and more connections each time he forcibly took from others. - Thus, the more he took, the less he had.
I love how during the movie, Oogway essentially kept telling Kai "When will you learn that too much is bad for you" And you know when Kai learned? When he was dying from too much of it Amazing Message

I feel bad for kai. He carried oogway for 100 miles in snow and pandas trained oogway to heal. But they ignored kai. And kai became bad and oogway has to stop him. And kai gets defeated by po again when he returned.
