After watching a ton of content on this subject this vid was by far the best. I have equal lefty to righty golfers in the family. What is the minimum width required to be able to insert the smaller hitting mat in the center?

Thanks for the kind words! With the Carl's C-Series design, the ball doesn't come back hard at all. It kind of hits, drops and rolls right to you, I would definitely add the safety foam around the perimeter they sell as it offers protection to the EMT pipes. As for the exposed wall with the shanks, since I hit 8' away from the screen, shanks really aren't a problem. Glad it helped! If you plan to use any of the products in the video, please feel free to use the links in the description, it definitely helps the channel out! Not a weird question at all, I get asked that a lot😂 I built the clock myself. I’ve seen it over the years at the tour events and being a big watch guy I’ve always wanted one.
Great video. Nicely explained. Do you get any movement of the turf on the rubber mat when you are swinging? Did you use adhesive to keep the turf from moving on the mat?
Thank you! I get zero movement from the turf on the mat. It has a really rough texture that makes it grip well and with the hitting insert in place it ties the mat and turf together. The mat will move slightly after so much use, but we’re talking maybe a half inch…in which case it’s as easy as pulling it back in place.
@@PixelGolf Great. Also, is there a reason you didn't mount the projector on the bar mount that they have that can attach to the frame? I will be moving my enclosure against the wall when not in use and was trying to decide between the bar vs ceiling mount. With the bar mount attached to the enclosure it would guarantee the same distance/alignment to the screen each time I move it. With a ceiling mount I would have to make sure the enclosure is in the exact spot every time.
Since my enclosure is only 33” deep, I’d have to have a really long extension. I move mine out quite a bit for filming and repositioning isn’t difficult at all, just adjust until the image is correct. I would imagine it would be more difficult to adjust the extension holding the projector as I imagine it would move a bit when moving the assembly.
@@PixelGolf Makes sense. I didn't think about the bar moving as mine would only be about 36" deep. It would probably have to extend out another 2 ft depending on the projector used. Sorry, last question. I'm also debating between the Premium and Preferred screen from Carls. I will only be using 1080 and my enclosure will be about 10'W x 8'H. Is the image at that resolution and size really noticeably better on the Premium screen? Thanks.
@rlbjr I personally don’t have any experience with the preferred. Based on the thumbnail nail it seems like a thicker woven pattern and more textured, so I would imagine it would affect the image. I will say the premium screen is extremely nice and it’s quiet as well! Whatever you pick, make sure to use good clean balls and clean clubs… it will look nice for a lot longer!
I would recommend 1” over 3/4” for the height to accommodate hitting inserts and the divot style strip. You can use a wood underlayment if you absolutely need to use 3/4” for whatever reason though.
Great videos. I have watched them all and are very helpful. One question, did you ever try hitting from 7 feet from the screen and if so how did that go??
I decided I wanted it to be easily moveable and I put it in at the start of Covid. It was just supposed to be a temporary thing, but myself and the fam liked it so much it's here to stay!
Hey , very informative video. I’m in the process of learning how to design my golf sim in the garage w the measurements 100 inches height x 134 inches width x 69 inches deep. Any suggestions??
Hi Armando, I’m releasing a video this week that is showcasing a tool that should be very helpful for this! Make sure to subscribe and you’ll see that pop up!
I know you built your own hitting strip, but I feel like I am missing something... Most of the hitting strips you buy seem to be 1.75 inches in heght, if my floor consist of 1" foam tiles and putting turf, wouldn't my mat be sticking up approx. 3/4" ? Yours looked pretty flush. Thanks for this video it has me wanting to redo my area.
Yes, I built my own so I can get the depth right and make it the exact size I wanted. With the 1” gym mat and putting turf you end up roughly around 1.5” and most strips would stick up about 1/4”. You could add some kind of uderlayment to raise the surface up higher to accommodate for this or build your own so you can set the exact height. I also liked building my own as it allowed me to add a real tee where other divot hitting insert don’t have this. We have a video on the channel if you’re interested in building one.
Thank you for the support! I actually built that wall clock. I’ve been seeing it for years watching the PGA events and being a big watch guy I decided to make one. Definitely my favorite addition to the sim room!
Oh man, I can't tell you how many people ask about that clock... I made it and it is my favorite accessory in the sim. Every time I saw it on TV I was like, "I need that!". It was a process and I am working on starting a Patreon showing how it's done.
Awesome video! I’m just beginning my journey into an indoor golf sim and this is so valuable! Quick question tho: if the floor isn’t level, do you just pad the connectors on the bottoms to raise one side? Or do you just level the screen by adjusting the bungee mounts? Thanks again
Great question! I haven't had to personally deal with this issue, but I would assume you could get crafty and play with the tension on the screen to adjust or make the adjustments from the projector if it has 4 corner adjust. If you need any help, reach out to us on the website and we can help you for free.
Great video! I am in the process of starting my build. The insert I want is 1.75 inches tall. You have anything you recommend I use to get the extra1/4” of height so floor matches up even with hitting mat?
Hey, first great video really informative and love the setup. You mentioned going through different launch monitors. Im currently trying to decide between the new SkyTrak+ or spending a bit more on the Bushnell Launch Pro. Any thoughts between those two units? I think you mentioned you run BLP? Any insight would be great as its the most $$$ and arguable most important decision of the entire build.
Its up to you. They both get the job done. For skills assessment & bag mapping go with skytrak+. If you're looking for something closer to trackman with more data, go for bushnell. Just warning you that bushnell will cost around $750 annually because of gold subscription and gspro. By no means does skytrak+ lack in quality compared to bushnell, but the bushnell is a bit more robust. I went with skytrak+ because I couldn't justify paying 1k more upfront along with $500 more annually for less lag and angle of attack. Hope this helped.
Thank you Kevin! I have yet to try the Skytrak+ unfortunately, but I can speak for the LaunchPro/GC3. I really believe that the LaunchPro has everything 99% of people need and the Foresight fitting software and technology is awesome, which is why you see it used for club testing by a lot of the big names. In conjunction with GSPro software it truly is an exceptional way to go, but the Annual membership may be a deal breaker for some. My advice would be to get a GC3 if you have the budget, or get the LaunchPro and maybe after the first year you can make the decision to unlock it a drop the annual fee. I’ve seen the unlocked option go on sale a few times too.
@@asherchung9614 how has the skytrak+ been with misreads/no-reads and also how is it when doing shorter chip shot accuracy and putting for sim golfing on GS Pro or E6?
@@kevinjung442 Haven't tested it in E6 yet but it experiences mis-reads when you thin the ball or if the background matches color with the ball. Like if I thin the ball or just hit it terribly it'll misread, which isn't a bad thing because i couldn't care if it reads a ball that goes 5 ft. Its pretty accurate on the short shots and havent tested putting. Im happy with it.
Quick question on the Bushnell Launch Pro. How easy is it to switch from a right handed to a left handed player? Is there a lot of movement or additional setup required?
Does the pattern of the gym mat matter if it's being covered by a putting green carpet? I already have the diamond patterned ones, wanted to see if I can re-use them...
Just one hdmi cable. Links are in the description. I have since changed my projector to the 4K BenQ, check the channel for that video and a more detailed overview of projector setup.
How far are you hitting from your screen? Looking at buying but there’s so much info out there that you need to be 12 feet away or more but that chews up a lot of space!
Hi. Great video. I’m looking to get a sim in my garage. I’m actually intrigued by the Trugolf Apogee launch monitor. Aside from the price, do you have any experience with it?
Just wanted to post again since I’m trying to build out a sim similar to yours…With the c series do you have the turf in front of the bottom edge of the screen or does the bottom of the screen sit on top of your turf? And what size pipe insulation pieces did you use? Thanks!
Hello, I have the turf sitting up to the turf, so the bottom of the screen is below the turf height. The Pipe Insulation I used was the standard 6’ pieces at Lowe’s/Home Depot for 1” pipe. They are a few buck a piece. If you need an immediate response for anything else, don’t hesitate to give us a call. Phone number is on our website.
It really depends on the swing. 10’ is ideal, but 9’ can work depending on the swing arc. I have 9.5’ roughly in my slope ceiling setup and had a 6’ 7” guy in here with no clearance issues.
Great video, very helpful I am currently building my set up and already have the GC3 I only have about 3.3 meters width Because the GC3 is camera based I don’t need to hit be hitting directly into the middle of the screen right?
No, you can hit off center and most software has the ability to adjust the center point in the software for this reason. One thing to consider is, the more off center from the middle of the screen, the more bounce back is added. Think of jumping on a trampoline, the more in the middle, the more give the material has.
96" is not high enough for driver, you want at least 9', 9.5-10' is more ideal. My ceilings are vaulted so they're 8 feet at the screen and about 9.5-10' at the hitting location. You may be able to get away with hitting irons though. Maybe take a stick that is like a 7 iron length and try it to check clearance. You would still have a blast with irons and wedges and I actually find myself more so playing short courses and practicing irons anyway.
If you go the custom route, how important is it to maintain dimensions that fit a 4:3 ratio? For example, 10.5x8 is 4:3 perfectly, but if I have enough space to go 11x9 is it worth it? That's more like a 5:4 ratio. It's def more screen, but is it worth the hassle of trying to fill the screen completely with custom resolution etc? This is the analysis paralysis I currently have.
So mine actually isn't a perfect 4:3 as I went with it a little wider to fill my space how I wanted too. Setting a custom resolution isn't a big deal, the only downside is if I watch something on my Apple TV in native 4:3 there's a little bit of width gap as Apple doesn't allow custom resolutions.
@@PixelGolf Thanks for replying, it sounds like you would recommend having as big of an impact screen as possible regardless of aspect ratio then? Examples would be 11x9 when you can't fit 12x9, vs 10.5x8 which would be proper 4:3 then?
Yes they can! Initial build was under 6k with Mevo+ launch monitor and 1080p projector. I have since upgraded to a 4k projector, custom gaming laptop and GC3 so it is now a 15-17K build.
I don't have a permanent place for a sim. Your enclosure - Do you think it is feasible to use 2 or 3 furniture dollies to be able to roll the enclosure maybe 10 to 15-ft out of the way when not in use? (I know this is a pretty unusual question for this).
I’m not sure why but for some reason the synthetic turf website says shipping will cost almost the same as the price of the turf which is ridiculous. Did you have the same issue?
I got it locally. Honestly, the best way to save some money is to Google Maps “putting green turf” or “artificial turf” in your area. There is typically a few suppliers and you just want a putting green turf that rolls the ball true. They usually have some demo areas at their building. Ask for end of roll pieces, you might save even more!
I put in your exact measurements and it tells me that it wont fit and wont let any of the other settings be adjusted. I tried making my room size 200 x 200 and it still just says it wont fit lol. Guess they dont wont to sell anything.
Really depends how on the setup. My original setup: Mevo+, GT1090HDR projector and basic gaming laptop was under 5k with everything. Really, the screen and turf will cost you around 2k, the other cost are dependent on what you want. If you have a budget to work with, give us a call. Happy to help!
10’ will be tight but you can make it work. You’ll likely have to hit offset from center, but pretty much all of the sim softwares have this correction,
She’s a keeper! Most people are too concerned with having a formal sitting room that no one uses… That’s not how we roll😂 A home should be an extension of yourself and what you enjoy, not a canvas to conform to the norm. My wife’s also grown quite attached to it over the years, if I tried to take it down she would likely kill me🤣
@johnstroz7618 If you mean 9’ ball to screen, yes it does! I ran mine 9’ ball to screen with the unit 7’ behind the ball and received very accurate readings.
Can you have your wife call my wife and convince her to let me do this?...🤣 I have a formal dining room right off the front door, like your space, that gets used once a year for Christmas...We'd get so much more use out of it as a SIM with a projector for other things.
Haha, I hear you! This room is kind of a bonus room that has been many things over the years, all of which led to it never being used, until the sim. Now we get a ton of use out of the space and if I ever needed the space it all comes down in under 30 minutes. But, when guest are here, it’s definitely an entertainment area that everyone gravitates towards!
If you can make a $400 projector work for your setup, there is definitely nothing wrong with that and you should first and foremost stay in the budget you’re comfortable with. Typically, more affordable projectors have less brightness that make it difficult since you’ll need ambient light in order for the launch monitor to clearly see the ball and with less brightness from the projector you’ll have to use less ambient light to see the image. In addition, most affordable projectors don’t have a short throw ration making them have to mount further back from the screen to fill the image and typically will cast a shadow from the person hitting. There are however some great affordable options out there and you don’t need to overspend if it’s not a good financial option for you.
Depends how you configure it... The enclosure and turf are about $2500. Then you can get a really good projector for $1500-2000 or a budget friendly one under 1k. Same with the launch monitor and computer. If you need help, reach out to our number from our website and we will help you through it for free!
Very good explanation of how to design your own golf sim to fit your space. Like the gym mat idea, may have to give that a try.
Most impressive part is that you convinced your wife to convert a room in the house to this. You got a keeper there buddy!
Sometimes it’s better to ask for forgiveness rather than permission😂

Great video and so helpful as I start to build mine! Weird question, where’d you get the Rolex clock wall display??
Great video and thanks for sharing. What did you use for the greens around the hitting mat?
The rough strip? Thats just rough from Lowe’s/Home depot. It’s like 1’x15’ for roughly(pun intended) $20.
Do you strongly recommend 1-inch mats over 3/4 inch? Would 3/4 not be enough for the divot action hitting strip? Thank you! Great video!
I would recommend 1” over 3/4” for the height to accommodate hitting inserts and the divot style strip. You can use a wood underlayment if you absolutely need to use 3/4” for whatever reason though.
im more interested in the outdoor mini setup. is there any video on it?
There is not, but I will surely make one!
@@PixelGolf yes pls. for those who have space constraint and budget
What is your ceiling height at your swing area please?
My ceilings are sloped, but it is just over 9.5’ at the location I hit from.
Great videos. I have watched them all and are very helpful. One question, did you ever try hitting from 7 feet from the screen and if so how did that go??
It was a bit too close, I was getting close to hitting the top of the enclosure with driver... I find 8-9' is perfect!
Curious: Why didn't you use the carls built in kit screen for this space of yours? Seems perfect for it.
I decided I wanted it to be easily moveable and I put it in at the start of Covid. It was just supposed to be a temporary thing, but myself and the fam liked it so much it's here to stay!
@@PixelGolf Makes sense!
@@PixelGolf can’t wait! Subscribed!
Did you consider horse stall flooring vs the gym mat you used?
I did not... Never even thought of that😂 Whatever gets you the height you need and isn't hard should be fine.
Awesome video. Subscribed. Where did you find the Rolex wall clock? Pretty cool addition
Thank you for the support! I actually built that wall clock. I’ve been seeing it for years watching the PGA events and being a big watch guy I decided to make one. Definitely my favorite addition to the sim room!
Damn, may have to steal that idea. Been looking for one
Love the Rolex wall clock. Looked online but couldn’t find one. Do you have a link for it?
On another comment he said he made it
Do you know where to buy canopy separately? I am building 8X10 enclosure. Thanks.
I’d reach out to carls, they may sell it separately.
@Pixel Golf _ How did you make or where did you purchase the Rolex L-Clock?
Oh man, I can't tell you how many people ask about that clock... I made it and it is my favorite accessory in the sim. Every time I saw it on TV I was like, "I need that!". It was a process and I am working on starting a Patreon showing how it's done.
@@PixelGolf you need to
Post a how-to. It would go viral in the golf community. Maybe even in the SimRacing community since they are very similar
What is the stemp meter reading of your putting mat?
I don't have a stemp meter, but I would guess 9-10 on the one in this video. The new turf I switched to from my later videos is like a 11-12.
Do you have a video about your portable set up?
I don’t unfortunately
Great video! I am in the process of starting my build. The insert I want is 1.75 inches tall. You have anything you recommend I use to get the extra1/4” of height so floor matches up even with hitting mat?
You can look at 1/4” underlayment of various material or something as simple as an old rug at Goodwill.
GREAT video man. Do you think this would work in a room that has 9 foot ceilings ?
It would be close… Irons should be okay, but driver will come down to your natural swing plane.
Great information and some great links, i noticed you have a rolex clock on the wall, is this some thing you can purchase or did you make it ?
Hello, I made it myself. It was a very tedious process, but worth it in the end!
I haven’t had to do that, but you can switch it in the setting and play the hole out in the software instead of alternating to make it easier.
Does the pattern of the gym mat matter if it's being covered by a putting green carpet? I already have the diamond patterned ones, wanted to see if I can re-use them...
The pattern shouldn't matter as it will be covered by the turf anyway.
@@PixelGolf Thank you. You channel is awesome and very helpful.
What did u use to connect your computer to your projector?
Just one hdmi cable. Links are in the description. I have since changed my projector to the 4K BenQ, check the channel for that video and a more detailed overview of projector setup.
Did carl's send you the dimensions for the pipe you used, since you sourced it on your own?
Yup, they include the cut lengths in a schematic in the box. They are all for people deciding to source and save!

How far are you hitting from your screen? Looking at buying but there’s so much info out there that you need to be 12 feet away or more but that chews up a lot of space!
Hello, I’m hitting from 8’ away. I was hitting from 9’, but found 8’ to be a great compromise.
Hi. Great video. I’m looking to get a sim in my garage. I’m actually intrigued by the Trugolf Apogee launch monitor. Aside from the price, do you have any experience with it?
I actually have it sitting at my house now and will be filming a video about it soon. Stay tuned!
I will because I’m curious to see if the E6 connect is the only software option there is and not GS Pro.
How do you connect the turf to the foam mats? Do you glue them? I watched your video on the hitting insert and I plan to do the same thing!
Sorry for the late reply… The turf just floats on top of the gym tiles and doesn’t move.
@@PixelGolf awesome, thank you!
What's the travel golf net model on the beach?
That's the Spornia SPG-7, amzn.to/4ec9vpN and the Spornia screen attachment, amzn.to/4erYoZK. It is vey easy to setup and stores in a small bag.
Where did you get the corner foam pipe covering, and where did you get that Rolex wall clock?
The pipe covering is from Lowes and the clock I made myself.
What about the clock itself? Before you built the box around it
So how much was the build minus the LM and projector?
For just the custom screen and turf I was about $2600 USD. That includes the leds and hitting insert.
May i know what kind of wall desk/rack that you have used for your pc setup?
Hello, I just bought a pipe shelf kit from Amazon and pieced it together to the shape I wanted and added wood slats.
How long is the turf from screen to the end?
Hello, it is 14' exactly.
What is the height of your ceiling over the hitting area?
Roughly 9.5’ high.
Thank you for a good walkthrough. I want to build a home sim. My son is 6 foot 3 inches. What kind of clearance should I have in the room?
It really depends on the swing. 10’ is ideal, but 9’ can work depending on the swing arc. I have 9.5’ roughly in my slope ceiling setup and had a 6’ 7” guy in here with no clearance issues.
so if i just order the hitting screen the connecting brackets are included?
Hello, yes they come with all the connections needed, except the emt pipe, unless you add that from Carls as well.
Great video, very helpful
I am currently building my set up and already have the GC3
I only have about 3.3 meters width
Because the GC3 is camera based I don’t need to hit be hitting directly into the middle of the screen right?
No, you can hit off center and most software has the ability to adjust the center point in the software for this reason. One thing to consider is, the more off center from the middle of the screen, the more bounce back is added. Think of jumping on a trampoline, the more in the middle, the more give the material has.
@@PixelGolf ahh great advice
Thanks, appreciate the feedback
Where did you happen to get that Rolex clock on the wall?
I actually made it.
@@PixelGolf wow, that is super dope, you did a great job. Id love to do something like that, just completed my sim room build out a week ago.
Where did you get the Rolex wall clock
I actually made it.
I just want a hitting screen bay and a projector, I have the rest of what I need, where can I get those in a bundle
Links to the screen/enclosure are in the description and some projector recommendations as well.
Thank you for great information. I have 96inch height basement. Is it enough for simulator?
His was 84 inches...
Hi Davis, My white screen height is 84", but the ceilings are taller.
GREAT INFO! CAN THE SIMULATOR SUPPLIES DELIVERED TO CANADA TOO? ON THESE VIDEO HOW MUCH WAS YOUR TOTAL EXPENSE? TNX! JAY
Yes they can! Initial build was under 6k with Mevo+ launch monitor and 1080p projector. I have since upgraded to a 4k projector, custom gaming laptop and GC3 so it is now a 15-17K build.
How big is that actual room?? How much room do you have behind you? How long is that room total?
The actual room is 16’ wide by 23’ long.

This can be found from the links in the description to BirdieBall.
Weird question but that course with roller coaster isn’t real right?
That’s Hershey Park on GS Pro
Do you have to subscribe for the monitoring unit
Only if you get the Bushnell LaunchPro there is a subscription unless you pay to unlock it or buy the GC3
I have a room ver similar. I’m worried it’s going to be very loud for the family. Is that a problem for you?
Irons are not too bad, driver can be loud… but, usually when I’m in there the fam is hanging out or playing anyway.
THANK YOU
Thanks for watching!
I don't have a permanent place for a sim. Your enclosure - Do you think it is feasible to use 2 or 3 furniture dollies to be able to roll the enclosure maybe 10 to 15-ft out of the way when not in use? (I know this is a pretty unusual question for this).
Not unusual at all! I can easily roll my turf up, remove the gym mat and slide my whole enclosure out of the way. I’ve done it a few times actually.
Thanks for the response. That's good to know. Did you use furniture dollies or some other method? @@PixelGolf

Hmmm, might be a site glitch.
how much all in?
Really depends how on the setup. My original setup: Mevo+, GT1090HDR projector and basic gaming laptop was under 5k with everything. Really, the screen and turf will cost you around 2k, the other cost are dependent on what you want. If you have a budget to work with, give us a call. Happy to help!
This video is convincing me to buy this despite A: this is out of my price point atm, and B: I live with my parents LMAO
My space is 10’ wide x 20’ long x 9’ tall. Is that enough space for a sim, even if I do irons only?
10’ will be tight but you can make it work. You’ll likely have to hit offset from center, but pretty much all of the sim softwares have this correction,
How in the world did you convince your wife to let you put this in that location of your home? Lol
When you have 100% of the responsibilities in a marriage (pay bills and provide) you gain pretty much 100% authority.
She’s a keeper! Most people are too concerned with having a formal sitting room that no one uses… That’s not how we roll😂 A home should be an extension of yourself and what you enjoy, not a canvas to conform to the norm. My wife’s also grown quite attached to it over the years, if I tried to take it down she would likely kill me🤣
Does the projector connect to pc and pc to simulator through Bluetooth?
Sorry for missing this one. Projector connects to the PC via HDMI and the launch monitor is connected wirelessly through wifi.
how far from the screen do you hit from?
Hello, I hit 9’ from the screen
Can you comment on your GC2 experience?
It was great, but GC3 is the perfect home launch monitor imo.
Why is a $400 projector not good enough? Why is it important to spend $2K?
So 8 to 10k……
Depends how you configure it... The enclosure and turf are about $2500. Then you can get a really good projector for $1500-2000 or a budget friendly one under 1k. Same with the launch monitor and computer. If you need help, reach out to our number from our website and we will help you through it for free!
