  • In this video, I show you how to install a Minecraft Server in a docker container using Container Station on a QNAP TS-451. First, I'll install Container Station, then set the location for the containers and images, and finally, route the networking for the container while installing it.
    Please note: Container Station is available from the QTS App Center (QTS 4.2 or above) for x86-based TS-x51, TS-x51+, TS-x51A, TS-x53, TS-x53A, TS-x53B, TBS-453A, TS/TVS-x63, TVS-x70, TVS-x71, TS/SS-x79, TS/TVS-x80, TVS-x82 series, TS-1685, and TDS-16489U, and the ARM-based TS-x28, TS-x31P, TS-x31X, TS-x31+ series and TS-1635 with a minimum of 1GB RAM.

    Firstly, thank you so much for this genuinely thoughtful video - the care and attention to the segments as well as a concise voice over are all of a professional grade and I took pleasure in following it. I have now set up a Minecraft server on my QNAP and it is working like a dream; furthermore, it introduced me to the necessity of the Container Station and exposed me to its other functions.
    I do have a question, however: if I want to make this accessible to friends over the internet, what are the steps? If nothing else, could you point me in the right direction? I am assuming I need to open a port on my firewall among other things, and perhaps a static IP, but due to the bespoke nature of this video I am struggling to find relevant tutorials to take me to the next stage.
    Thanks again, I have subscribed and look forward to more tutorials. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    • @accessrandom
      @accessrandom  6 лет назад

      Thanks for the kind words and for subscribing. That's a very good use case that I hadn't considered. You are correct that you need to port forward and use an internal static IP. Usually, you simply open the port (25565 by default) and connect to your public IP:port from Minecraft that sits outside your network. With that said, I just tried port forwarding the virtual IP on my router but I couldn't see the port open from outside my network - so something else is going on there. I'll need to dig deeper this weekend.
      In the meantime, I'd recommend QNAP's NAS Community Forum as a good resource. I'll report back this weekend...

    • @HazzerJ
      @HazzerJ 6 лет назад

      Hi again! Thank you so much for taking the time to get back to me so quickly. So armed with your positive response and some determination I hit the forums and I found my answer!
      What I needed to do was use the port forwarding function on my router, which itself is a generic out-the-box home hub. Using the basic settings it allowed for me to forward port 25565 alongside the static IP which I set following your guide. I tested from an external source it and it worked... I still can't quite believe it!
      I've waited years to build an online Minecraft server and the QNAP turned out to be the ticket, but I wouldn't be able to tap its immense functionality if it wasn't for people like yourself taking the time to put together tutorials like this. So many thanks again, I plan to work through your other videos next.

    • @accessrandom
      @accessrandom  6 лет назад

      Super! I'm glad you were able to get yours working :)
      I am going to chalk my issue up to an environmental problem in my network, but I'll keep trying this weekend. For some reason, 25565 would not open on my router even though other forwarded ports were working fine.

      @@accessrandom Hi! So one year on and as you might be aware, the Kitematic container never updated past 1.12.2. Unfortunately, it caused authentication issues on my server. When I try to connect locally, or a friend tries to connect online via the Firewall, the message we receive reads:
      Failed to connect to the server!
      Authentication servers are down. Please try again later, sorry!
      It has been this way for months, so I thought if we updated to the latest version it might help, however, the Kitematic Environment still lists a value of 1.12.2 and the "Recommended" Minecraft docker has a host of different settings which I cannot figure my way around. So our server has remained static for over 8 months with none of us able to play. I backed up the world with the intention of importing into a new docker environment but don't know where to start.
      By any chance, have you built an environment on the latest version (1.14.4) or would you have any advice on which docker I should have a go at? Or even why we get authentication errors on 1.12? I've had a go but without guidance, it looks like I'm floating in the water, so any help at all would be so appreciated! Thanks so much as always!

    • @accessrandom
      @accessrandom  5 лет назад

      @@HazzerJ I'm afraid I haven't really revisited this topic since I created the video. I'll need to look for a good 1.14.4 package to try. I've noticed that the Kitematic container hasn't been updated also; however, I am still able to connect to the server by selecting the 1.12.2 version when you start up Minecraft (such that the client and server versions match).
      If you're still seeing your error, you may want to try setting online-mode to false in the properties file as shown at the 6:20 mark. Note that this allows anyone to join the server, so you'll want to white list the players who try to join the server.

    Firstly, thank you for this very good video. I was able to set up the Minecraft server although I did experience a problem which in the end I traced to my router. So I thought I would comment in case anyone else experienced this. If you have access control on your internet router switched to on then it is likely to block the virtual adaptor and container virtual switch. My Minecraft did not run at first and after some head scratching I finally traced it to this. After unblocking these two on my router under 'access control' it worked like a charm!

      You're welcome, and thank you 👍
      It has been a while since I've set one up, but I believe you can have only one world at a time (unless you set up two servers - each pointing to a different port on the same IP and having its own world). If I remember correctly, you can't really change a world for one server. However, you can delete or back up the worlds folder, and have the server re-create a new world. If you want more control over the world generation (say, a flat world), you can create the world on the client and copy it the folder over to the server. Again, this is from memory.
      I'm afraid I've never set up mods on the server - only on the client. I'll need to defer this to my viewers. Anyone?

      By default, Minecraft uses port 25565 but if you're on a computer within your own local network, you shouldn't need the port information - it's only when you're port forwarding in the router that you'd need it (giving access to computers outside your network). You may want to look at your firewall settings on the client Windows machine to make sure it's allowing Java in the firewall (assuming you're using Windows)...

      @@AndreasKurz Interesting... if you wish, you can change the port for the server in the properties file (at the 6:19 mark). Again, that's usually for port forwarding. What you could try is to set that port to match what Minecraft uses on Android, and then port forward it. To reach the server you'd need to enter your ISP's IP address, followed by a colon, then the port. It's a roundabout way to reach the server but I can't think of another workaround.

      Interesting - thank you for the suggestion. The TS-451 is a little underpowered but when I get a newer QNAP I will put it on my list.

    hi,
    Once again thanks for your wonderful work
    I have one weird issue:
    I did as you explain but what ever happens the container don't want to use my virtual switch which is as you on RJ45 port 2 of my nas .
    Instead when minecraft start, It create my port 1 as a virtual switch port, which is not what I requested ...
    Does somebody had the same issue ???
    Thanks for your Help
    Stéphane

      Hi Stephane, do you have an existing virtual switch on the second port? If so, are you using bridge mode and setting the interface to Adapter 2 (as seen at the 4:50 mark)?

      Hi MArk,
      thanks your answer, I have created a virtual at the beginning of my qnap setting with the first VM,
      in the meantime, I find a solution/bypass :
      in the virtual switch option I dedicated POrt 1 as default gateway (which in fact didn't change the issue but it allowed me to edit the container and change the virtual switch created on port 1 by the container install for the one I created initially (port2) then I was able to remove the virtual switch created by the container (port1). FYI I installed later a plex container and it had exactly the same behaviour (it again create a virtual switch from port 1) I did as above to solve this issue. I have another one but I m working on it :)
      thanks again
      Stéphane

      Thanks for the update. I'm glad you were able to remove the virtual switch from the first port and solve the problem. I might try a Plex container myself in the future...

    Dear Access.
    First of all, thank a lot for the tutorial, I been able to set a server in my qnap 251, to run for me, my kids and their friends.
    I have installed the same version you say in the video. Is there anyway, that i could set any mods to the version?.
    I have set a free DNS, for them not to have to stay checking for changes in my IP. (they don't know how to). I believe that this has nothing to be with it, but i comment just in case it has.
    Thanks for your time.

      I'm sorry, but i haven't attempted installing mods on the server side (I've done it plenty of times on the client side where I would open up the world to others who had the same mod). Perhaps one of my viewers or subscribers can chime in - anyone?

    Hey man, I keep getting failed to log in to server restart launcher, I can also see in docker: userip:port disconnected. I can ping my server, and its set to bridged connection trough my v switch, I really don't know what to do. I tried both onlinemode: false and true

      Is the computer inside the LAN, or outside? If it's outside, you'll need to port forward the IP and port in the router. If it's inside, there still could be firewall issues that may be preventing connection.

      @@accessrandom Ill give it another go to be sure. I should probably mention I have the ts431p2 with ARM32v7 architechture, nonetheless I found a docker that ran the server without isssue. and as I said, I can see in the output of the container when I try to connect. so the connection is there, but it fails for some reason.
      edit: Im in the first year studies of networking, and get some basic Linux classes as well, id be happy to try out other workarounds if you have suggestions :p

      I've installed mods on the client side but never on the server side so to be honest, I'm not sure. I did find a "monofraps/minecraft-modpack" on the Docker Hub website, so you may want to look into that.

    Great video, thanks! How do I open my server for friends and family? Because if they enter the same IP followed by :25565 they can't join.

    • @accessrandom
      @accessrandom  6 лет назад

      Hi Kristof, if your friends and family are outside of your local area network, then you will need to port forward your Minecraft server in your router. First, you'll need to find out what your public IP address is (myip.com can tell you what that is). Then you'll need to log into your router and forward port 25565 to the static internal IP address of your Minecraft server. All routers have different user interfaces so you'll need to look up your router's documentation. At that point, your friends and family should be able to connect to your public IP address through Minecraft. Hope that helps...
