Sonex Aircraft President and EAA Homebuilt Aircraft Hall of Fame member, John Monnett presents a history of his experiences converting Volkswagen engine components for aircraft use. John, shares his 40 years of experimenting with air-cooled VW auto engines for powering experimental aircraft. Авто/Мото
This guys answers are great .He tells it like it is no BS 👍
I just put a deposit down on an AeroVee-powered Sonex. I have some apprehension about the AeroVee, but feel much better about it after watching this presentation!
I've been flying AeroVee S/N 126 and AeroCarb 358 for 15 years. I have also flown 3 other AeroVee engines in other people's airplanes thru the years including two first flights. Its been a ton of fun! I have only met John a few times in passing but its always great to listen to him. I hadn't seen this webinar since it first came out and it was great to listen again. Thank you John for all your contributions to our Sport!
Them VW engines where pretty tough. That's looks like a damn good setup.
Good to hear John break down his vee birds construction..😎
Wow what a great webinar! Learned a lot.
This is the forth time listening to John's presentation. Great stuff.
I built a performance 1776cc VW dual carb for my 1971 VW Bus. I drove up to Lake Tahoe at 80mph. At full throttle the 100+hp 1776cc Port + Polished head Engine got very Hot. So I put a large Berg external. electric fan oil cooler w/thermostat and a 3.5qt deep sump. The entire system raised the stock tiny 2qt oil cooling to big 9qt!
With 20+ years driving VW air-cooled engines, my worst experience was a loose exhaust valve insert (it sounds like death knocking),but I kept driving (about 100 miles) I pulled the head staked in a new insert and drove it another couple of years. Bulletproof! The single port head might have a better exhaust flow. SU carbaretors has a wide variety of fuel mixture needles.
Ilove SU carbs personally but have had icing problems with them at sea level. The carb type that was described in your narrative is similar to the 1960's Wal Phillips or Gardner types.
You so much thank you so much. More comments later but very good job appreciate what you're doing for Aviation and I will make more comments again later
I think you've got a good thing going
I've got a hummel bird with a mosler cb-40. Would it be possible to fit the aerovee 12v ignition to this engine?
gas engines are fun and sound wonderful. VWs can crank out hundreds of hp and are almost indestructable (although they sound like hell when a valve seat insert falls out,but they run on anyway) I'd like to build a flathead for the engine Yamaha has developed new electric motors with all the hp and torque you can use at very low weights, they even sound scary (like somebody tearing paper). Graphene supercapacitors may outperform gas imagine refueling in two seconds!
It seems the Aerovee and the Revmaster are one in the same engine.
Interesting
Serious question: is it feasible to make it turn the opposite direction for us non-russian pilots with a trained right foot? I know adapting would be a simple matter of repetition but I would like to know if it is possible to turn clockwise like a Cont or Lyc
Install a reverse cam.
@@ljbern1 Or drive it off the flywheel end - not possible with the AeroVee bits though.
Why does the mustang or any ww2 plane have 4 blades if they aren’t any good?
You didn’t listen to why he doesn’t use multi blade air screws.
Good grief what a mess
What are you referring to as a mess?
