This is exactly why I'll never be a great FIFA player, I live and breathe football, I love it and watch lots of games per week and keep up with results, and when I play FUT I try to emulate what I see in real life - which means all those passes that are "magically overhit" that you show here. Meanwhile Xx360NoScopeKid69xX who plays this like "a video game" just bypasses the midfield over and over with passes that don't make sense but work. FIFA in a nutshell.

I'm sure in career mode you can play in triangles and be the football experts you all see yourselves as. This is an online video game. Sometimes I have to avoid playing a through ball and play a normal pass instead because I know the through ball will be over hit and sometimes I get caught up because of it.
Man u just said it there there not viable in short distances so your right to use the normal pass look for other options ,only use through balls when u have space in behind

It’s like there’s a “golden zone” where you get the “timing” just right and it’s guaranteed to reach your player. 100% agree with this video. The close range passes on the edge of the box should be the MOST common ones that work. Clever little snap passes into gaps. FIFA’s always had this thing with overhit through balls though, probably because the keepers suck ass so they try to “balance” the game with shocking through balls
This was a relief to watch. This game has been driving me mad as I have always relied on through balls in Fifa and generally ignored doing skill moves and the passes I wait for and try and time are always overhit or slight off in direction. I'm an Arsenal fan, and that's the kind of football I grew up with, trying to essentially walk the ball in. I've been forced to learn more skill moves and try not to lunge into tackles or intercepts as they aren't rewarded in this game. So many rebounds and missed tackles, players instead lunging over the ball. So frustrating, keep up the content.
It's sad to say cause fifa is one of my favorite games, but this year's game is broken on ps4/x1 at least. If you put all your controls on assisted your basically playing a scripted game, and if you switch to manual passing...my god, good luck with the power bar.

I went to Reddit to write about this but they told I was a noob who doesn’t manually defend. Apparently noticing your opponents pass moments before it occurs and blocking the passing lane isn’t manually defending.

i think it's important to seperate football from fifa. it's an arcade game that only shares basic principles with football (similar to rocket league or head soccer) took me a while to realize that

The passing is bad but the worst thing is the offensive AI. I have countless examples of players making runs BEHIND defenders instead of into space, but since I've already hit X in anticipation of passing into space, I lose the ball. Somehow they make Fifa worse every year.
i'd really like to see you try out low or semi pass assistance for one whole WL (or more), and see how it plays out. your analysis on it would certainly be valuable, especially since almost everyone just chooses assisted without thinking.
I actually play both FIFA and PES... This passing problem made me realise FIFA rewards the worse player and makes defense something that is not useful at all... Congrats for stating it. When I explain this to my friends they just say I should learn to play that game instead of mimicking real football

At the start I was thinking that we could actually play real football with short passes and good through balls but the game doesn’t reward you for that, it rewards you for pushing the ball up without even looking
This is one of the reasons why I don’t play manually in defence anymore just because I get punished so much!!! I still hit elite 1 and 2 comfortably without touching my defence. I recommend everyone to play all manual you want but do not touch your defenders unless needed and defend with your cdms.
I hate these overhit passes so much, I've tried to force myself to approach passing in the final third a bit differently in an attempt to decrease the number of times it happens. For now I use short passes instead of through balls in the final third if either of the following are true: 1) The pass recipient is running directly toward goal with no covering defender ahead of them. 2) The player making the pass is facing toward the goal and will be making a pass that has an angle less than ~45° As far as I'm concerned the short pass bind does not behave the same way in the final third as it does in the rest of the pitch, it becomes what I would label "contextual short pass" and will become a perfect through ball if appropriate, leading to easy scoring opportunities. The through ball becomes "Pass to GK/Touchline" if used in even slightly the wrong circumstance despite looking like the easiest through ball of anyone's life.
While I agree that passing in this years game does leave alot of be desired, primarily issues with the consistency of power and the over the top through ball, alot of what you were showing here can be fixed by just using a normal pass rather using through ball as your final ball into the box, 9/10 the pass will stick. Also just start using offside trap on tactics to stop that nerd through ball, they've ruined the pressuring system so this or constantly dropping back with good shape to your defence are the only sure ways to stop the quick lads. I have been following your content for 3-4 weeks now and I have to admit that you really take your time to explain the game ( in a positive way). Before even seeing your fifa 17 vs fifa 20 attacking AI I was already conscious about the difference in the movement of the players. I bought fifa this year after 3 years ( fifa 17 was my last one) , I wanted to give EA a chance but after a month it really got boring and I easily feel that the more rationale you put behind your moves in the game the less you get rewarded ( in terms of everything: passes, shoots , skills , interceptions ecc.) . You are doing an amazing job with your channel, I hope you get more notice and that the channel grows as soon as possible because people like you should be the ones who influence EA in the creation of the game. Yes finally something that confirms I'm not going mad! I try to play the game as a football sim and couldn't figure out why the counter-attack goals are so overpowered... it all makes sense now.
TIP: The "triangle" or "Y" through ball does not work in the final third BUT the "double triangle" or "double Y" does work in the final third. I had this same issue until I started doing the "double" variation. All of your examples that don't work, WILL WORK when you do the "double" variation. It's all muscle memory.
If your in the box don't make a normal pass, press double x or double triangle, then it will the ball go a little bit higher but it won't go to far then
We were just talking about how the through balls don't seem to work like they did in FIFA 17/18. I picked up FIFA 19, it felt terrible so I skipped 20 and came back to 21 and now it feels worse. I play CDM or CB who tracks runs, have an advantage because I see the pass coming but the attackers just run through me and lock to the ball every time regardless of what I do! The only thing that works is to tackle the runner and get a red, if I don't the attacker just locks onto the ball. Any through ball I give gets overhit or underhit and the directional controls are terrible, but if I just hit a normal pass which I poorly judge that just makes it through and we score.
In my experiance, bad passes are now included in the scripting. If i play a really good game, leading like 3-0 half time, my passes will instantly get so bad and makes total non-sense sometimes.. Most obvious passes becomes a mess, just to avoid me getting more goals. Even if the only option is to play it to my striker, he will pass it to someone completlly different playrr, on the other side of the pitch.. Like geez, this year is worse than 20
came across this video today, most relatable thing i've watched when it comes to this game. tracking runs is pointless because the ball magically goes to the attacker. I am convinced that people know this and deliberately play the bad pass even when seeing that their attacker's run has been tracked all the way. this game goes against the fundamentals of football and applying the fundamentals of football gets you punished time after time.
It only works if you pass to mbappe or neymar, the game magically adjusts perfectly for them. You intercept a pass going to mbappe, dribble away and your players laces come undone, he gets an injury and falls to the floor
I reduced the game speed from fast to normal. That solved the overhitting though balls issue. Fifa does something weird with fast game speed. Passes feel different and even fatigue is much lesser.
When he started showing the bad passes I couldn't guess a single one. I always thought the opponent would pass somewhere else but nope, the absolute worst passing decision is made and it works
What I hate about the overhit through balls is that the ball does not slow down. It appears to be perfectly weighted when it comes off the foot, but the ball appears to be motorized and just keep going.
That's how you know your gonna suffer a goal or score a goal, either one, you will know when it's time, and you can't do nothing to stop it, you're supposed to control the players...but no EA!
Thanks so much for highlighting this. Apart from corners where the ball eventually gets into a royal ramble this are the goals I majorly concede too. My defender is right there behind the attacker sometimes I’m even controlling ready to track back but it just magically gets to their feet and leaves me behind. The real question is is there a way to stop it?. Do you think offside trap could reduce the success rate of these stupid glitch?
My muscle memory of holding R1 for driven passes and through balls is holding me back this year. All you need is normal through balls from a distance and only simple passes/chipped passes in the box.
When I first started playing fifa 21 I thought was amazing. But I entered div 2 in seasons and have learned that this game's passing is broken. Punishing mistakes. I learned this game struggles on breakaways and when there are two or more players are close

The same happens with manual slide tackles vs AI blocks and interceptions. Its like skill doesnt get rewarded in this game. The amount of interceptions and tackles i've done in certain matches and they get the ball straight back like its some ping pong match
@Stallion: I see one solution. Let me know what you think. They could introduce an option called competitive mode in every game mode (Especially Futchamps and rivals). If this mode is switched on then there should only be minimum AI assistance. For instance, defensive midfielders that are not selected by the player will not track the runs or other players etc. The game must not assist crappy players with last minute changes in pass direction which makes it literally impossible for even the best defenders in the world to defend. If the player decided to pass in the direction that the defending player has managed to mark manually then he deserves to win the ball back and the same concept of less AI assistance must be applied in all the other gameplay parts of the game.
The observations that you made greatly explain why the good players who play realistic fifa don’t get good rankings in ultimate team. The pass overpowering and stupid runs at the most critical moments very clearly depicted here prove that beautiful football is hardly ever rewarded.

I hate these overhit passes so much, I've tried to force myself to approach passing in the final third a bit differently in an attempt to decrease the number of times it happens. For now I use short passes instead of through balls in the final third if either of the following are true:
1) The pass recipient is running directly toward goal with no covering defender ahead of them.
2) The player making the pass is facing toward the goal and will be making a pass that has an angle less than ~45°
As far as I'm concerned the short pass bind does not behave the same way in the final third as it does in the rest of the pitch, it becomes what I would label "contextual short pass" and will become a perfect through ball if appropriate, leading to easy scoring opportunities. The through ball becomes "Pass to GK/Touchline" if used in even slightly the wrong circumstance despite looking like the easiest through ball of anyone's life.

This is not the only problem, penalties are so high, if a defender literally touches an attacker in the box, it's a penalty.

While I agree that passing in this years game does leave alot of be desired, primarily issues with the consistency of power and the over the top through ball, alot of what you were showing here can be fixed by just using a normal pass rather using through ball as your final ball into the box, 9/10 the pass will stick. Also just start using offside trap on tactics to stop that nerd through ball, they've ruined the pressuring system so this or constantly dropping back with good shape to your defence are the only sure ways to stop the quick lads. I have been following your content for 3-4 weeks now and I have to admit that you really take your time to explain the game ( in a positive way). Before even seeing your fifa 17 vs fifa 20 attacking AI I was already conscious about the difference in the movement of the players. I bought fifa this year after 3 years ( fifa 17 was my last one) , I wanted to give EA a chance but after a month it really got boring and I easily feel that the more rationale you put behind your moves in the game the less you get rewarded ( in terms of everything: passes, shoots , skills , interceptions ecc.) . You are doing an amazing job with your channel, I hope you get more notice and that the channel grows as soon as possible because people like you should be the ones who influence EA in the creation of the game. it's very refreshing to see someone finally rant about the same things that infuriate me in FIFA. The whole fun of playing with your friends is reading each other game, trying to find the passes that work and covering the right areas when off the ball. It's just gone

TIP: The "triangle" or "Y" through ball does not work in the final third BUT the "double triangle" or "double Y" does work in the final third. I had this same issue until I started doing the "double" variation. All of your examples that don't work, WILL WORK when you do the "double" variation. It's all muscle memory.

Whats more baffling than through passes being overhit is that flair through balls dont get overhit (as often)
If your in the box don't make a normal pass, press double x or double triangle, then it will the ball go a little bit higher but it won't go to far then
We were just talking about how the through balls don't seem to work like they did in FIFA 17/18. I picked up FIFA 19, it felt terrible so I skipped 20 and came back to 21 and now it feels worse.
I play CDM or CB who tracks runs, have an advantage because I see the pass coming but the attackers just run through me and lock to the ball every time regardless of what I do! The only thing that works is to tackle the runner and get a red, if I don't the attacker just locks onto the ball. Any through ball I give gets overhit or underhit and the directional controls are terrible, but if I just hit a normal pass which I poorly judge that just makes it through and we score.

In my experiance, bad passes are now included in the scripting. If i play a really good game, leading like 3-0 half time, my passes will instantly get so bad and makes total non-sense sometimes.. Most obvious passes becomes a mess, just to avoid me getting more goals. Even if the only option is to play it to my striker, he will pass it to someone completlly different playrr, on the other side of the pitch.. Like geez, this year is worse than 20
Also with these broken long passes it feels like attackers get a speed boost shortly before they recieve the ball and then they're through on goal.
came across this video today, most relatable thing i've watched when it comes to this game. tracking runs is pointless because the ball magically goes to the attacker. I am convinced that people know this and deliberately play the bad pass even when seeing that their attacker's run has been tracked all the way. this game goes against the fundamentals of football and applying the fundamentals of football gets you punished time after time.

You intercept a pass going to mbappe, dribble away and your players laces come undone, he gets an injury and falls to the floor

I reduced the game speed from fast to normal. That solved the overhitting though balls issue. Fifa does something weird with fast game speed. Passes feel different and even fatigue is much lesser.
It isn't just that bad players get a benefit, it's that it adds another (of many) aspect of randomness into what is supposed to be a competitive game.

What I hate about the overhit through balls is that the ball does not slow down. It appears to be perfectly weighted when it comes off the foot, but the ball appears to be motorized and just keep going.
That's how you know your gonna suffer a goal or score a goal, either one, you will know when it's time, and you can't do nothing to stop it, you're supposed to control the players...but no EA!

Thanks so much for highlighting this. Apart from corners where the ball eventually gets into a royal ramble this are the goals I majorly concede too. My defender is right there behind the attacker sometimes I’m even controlling ready to track back but it just magically gets to their feet and leaves me behind. The real question is is there a way to stop it?. Do you think offside trap could reduce the success rate of these stupid glitch?

Great vid! And yeah, you can either play futball/soccer or you can play fifa , you cannot do both and the game rewards you for one and not the other.
My muscle memory of holding R1 for driven passes and through balls is holding me back this year. All you need is normal through balls from a distance and only simple passes/chipped passes in the box.
When I first started playing fifa 21 I thought was amazing. But I entered div 2 in seasons and have learned that this game's passing is broken. Punishing mistakes. I learned this game struggles on breakaways and when there are two or more players are close

The same happens with manual slide tackles vs AI blocks and interceptions. Its like skill doesnt get rewarded in this game. The amount of interceptions and tackles i've done in certain matches and they get the ball straight back like its some ping pong match
@Stallion: I see one solution. Let me know what you think. They could introduce an option called competitive mode in every game mode (Especially Futchamps and rivals). If this mode is switched on then there should only be minimum AI assistance. For instance, defensive midfielders that are not selected by the player will not track the runs or other players etc. The game must not assist crappy players with last minute changes in pass direction which makes it literally impossible for even the best defenders in the world to defend. If the player decided to pass in the direction that the defending player has managed to mark manually then he deserves to win the ball back and the same concept of less AI assistance must be applied in all the other gameplay parts of the game.
The observations that you made greatly explain why the good players who play realistic fifa don’t get good rankings in ultimate team. The pass overpowering and stupid runs at the most critical moments very clearly depicted here prove that beautiful football is hardly ever rewarded.
What tactics is good for allowing the the good passes you show with the long ball to the receiver, anyone ?

I get what you are saying completely. When im in the opponents box i use the double tap through ball. it is much more predictable and accurate.
