      @zeddeka 19 дней назад +5

      Ridiculously simplistic to say Saville "only" got away with it because of his connections. The actual truth is that he got away with it for so long because he fit in with the prevailing culture. Many men viewed underage girls as fair game, and it's well known that pop stars like David Bowie and DJs like John Peel were sleeping with underage girls in that era. The "dirty old man" chasing girls and women was viewed as a kind of comedy figure and was almost celebrated. We also still had the victorian perceptions of "deserving" and "undeserving" victims. If you didn't conform, you'd be viewed as deserving everything you got. That is why so many victims didn't come forward until years later. They knew that if they spoke out in the 70s and 80s, nobody would believe them and they would be labelled and shamed and basically told it was their own fault. The whole culture was entirely different and predatory men were viewed as a fact of life. It's appalling, but that's the way it was.

      Many people in prominent positions were regarded as 'untouchable'. A well known one was Cyril Smith, the former Liberal MP for Rochdale. There was enough evidence in 1970 to have had him convicted for offences against young boys. When the CID sergeant who'd put the case together in the local police (back in 1970 it would have been Lancashire, GMP didn't exist until 1974) asked what was happening about charging Smith for the offences, he was told to forget it, unless he wanted to remain as a sergeant for the rest of his career or be downgraded and put back in uniform. Years later, a file was released, indicating there was sufficient evidence to convict Smith, by then he was dead.

      Rolf Harris for example? Cartoon Club, which specifically gave RH access to children, was not a BBC production. Some staff did raise concerns about his behaviour, but were brushed aside for ratings.
      Presenting this as an issue specific to the BBC, rather than a problem in the entertainment industry world-wide (also prevalent in sport coaching too), just endangers future victims.
