I used to have a Trinity V3 keyboard. Amazing synth. I gigged it for 15 years and sold it to a friend who is still using it. It's 22 years old now and has been gigged 6 nights a week for 20 years. Great to hear the sounds again.
Espen, i wish I could buy you a beer in local pub after your gig and talk about the gear and Commodore. Your videos are instant time travel and pure joy to watch!
You hit the nail on the head at the end. I've owned a Triton for 20 years and you can't make a track work with just the Korg sounds. It's very digital and hyped up sounding, but it needs some rougher, more truly analog sounds with it, to really shine. You also picked out a lot of my favourite sounds from this family of synths.
Every sound is wonderful. Wish I'd had stumbled upon this beauty way earlier! Well, guess it's time to get one! Reminds me a lot of the typical sounds of the Pet Shop Boys
I also have and Love a TR-Rack together with an Yamaha TG-77, Korg 01R/W, Roland JV-1080, Roland U-220 and a Roland System 1m in my SynthesizerRack :-)
Great 90s Korg goodness, all that Trinity sound in a 1RU design. Am getting more into modules as keyboards take up a lot of room! I think there is one of these in my future!
I love the TR-Rack, great sound. I actually made a text file for it years ago when I still had it for the actually extra data was taken from the expansion libraries Korg released for the Trinity sampling board expansion(PBS Tri) and loaded it to what used to be Irish Acts(now known as the Korg Forums)....very detailed file. One thing users should be aware of, is you cannot access all of the internal parameters of the TR-Rack without an editor. There are some of course of the most important accessible from the front panel, but you need the editor to really edit this synth fully, which unfortunately is now defunct. Someone needs to update this editor and give the TR-Rack the love it deserves. I don't have mine any more, but it's a great synth.
I owned both a Trinity Plus and TR Rack and loved the extra 8mb of sounds in the Rack version including the many new drum kits and much improved pianos. I sold both of them to get a fully expended Korg Triton Classic with MOSS Board.
Awesome! I have a Korg DW-6000, 03R/W and a Monologue, this shows Korg synths is so good and long-lasting that you only need to buy a new one every 15 years or so. :)

@@EspenKraft interesting, I think I agree! Pwm on sawtooth, snappier envelopes, really fat bass sounds. There is a lot there. And it was my first synth
I still have the Trinity keyboard I bought as new in the 90’s. For many years it was my main instrument. I really need to take it out of the bag soon... maybe when my MODX goes to service, the Trinity could take it’s place in my living room synth corner... :)
I remember in 1997 i was in college and i wanted to buy my first synth / keyboard and i saw the korg trinity being used by Yanni in his live at the acropolis video and wanted to buy one so badly but they were around 2400 dollars and way beyond my budget. so i bought a used Alesis qs 6 instead. I bought the TR rack for 150 two years ago and love the sounds. I love the sounds so much that i recently went ahead and purchased a used trinity plus also. however the TR Rack still sounds better and love just playing around with all the combis and presets . The TR RAck sounds fuller and richer to me and has more banks then the trinity plus . thanks for posting another great video.
I agree with the premise here. I "only" have 1 of these (and have had it ~20yrs at this point) but have been tempted in the past to buy 1 or more additional units because they are so great and amazingly over the years I've seen them offered at between $250-$350 whenever I'd run across them online. I wish the ADAT (optical digital out) expansion that works with TR-Rack was easy and inexpensive to find. The drums alone are fantastic in these, but there is so much more great stuff too.
Super video demonstration and sweet songs here! Thanks, Espen for such an incredible quality stuff and you make my Saturday`s breakfast more tasty again =) Cheers!
I have one, and they are the most underrated digital rack synth, not in reputation, but price. Mine was $125 in mint shape off a CL ad here in LA. And I've seen others under $200 too. Real head scratcher. The only wish I could have is the ability for it too be just like the Trinity V3, accept samples and have the MOSS board built in. But as it stands the pads on this are just as good as the ones on my JD990, but different in the Korg way.
I love my TR-Rack. The politeness (clarity) of the sounds can be "adjusted" with a touch of Mindprint or similar tube afterburner. You can almost smell the brimstone.
I love your Videos! I have had the same 19" trinity Rack, but sold. Today I am happy to use the VST trinity Version with quite the same Sound but perfect Integration.
The original snare sound from that song was done by recording a snare with a microphone and the processing done to sculpt that sound. No drum machines involved at all. David Z did all that.
Really wonderful Espen. I used the Korg and layered it with other sounds as well in a documentary I scored. Despite that, my knowledge of synthesis is very limited. So glad I discovered your channel.
I had thi great great Module but sold. Today I am very happy with korgs vst trinity Version. More comfort isn't possible. But I still love the 19" Rack Expanders instead of 20 big keyboards.
Another great video as always Espen :-) We have a T-R too, great value for an amazing rack synth. it really is a great bit of studio gear and still a 2nd hand bargain, at the moment !
Back then I first lusted endlessly after a Trinity (keyboard version), then the TR-Rack - could afford neither. I finally got one last year for $200. Great drums!
I was planning on doing a video about the Trinity Rack since I finished up my hour long look at the keyboard last year. Suppose that's not necessary anymore since you've covered it! ^^; One thing I would mention for anyone looking at buying one of these, is that the Trinity Rack has a few disadvantages compared to the keyboard; besides the UI being dinky compared to the massive touch screen UI, you can't load the virtual analog/virtual acoustic SOLO-TRI or MOSS-TRI boards in. The former is a whole Prophecy synth and the latter is a Z1 with halved polyphony, and both are very very excellent additions. You can hear the SOLO-TRI and the base Trinity on my last four music uploads or so (the newest one is a great example of the Trinity sneaking into a mix). You also can't load the PBS-TRI sampler in, so while you do get 256 new sounds on the TR-Rack, KORG released three sample packs for the PBS-TRI board, one of which has about 110 of the 256 presets on the Rack. There's also a full bank of (really bad) orchestral sounds, and a full bank of (really accurate) M1 sounds. Of course you can load your own samples in, but the UI is atrocious imo and 8MB of memory is really easy to fill up. Plus you have to program all the sounds manually, no way to easily import Akai programs... there's some more things I think I went over in my video about all this, but suffice to say there's a lot to talk about with the Trinity! That said, just having the third PBS bank - the one with half of the Trinity Rack sounds - is enough for me, and the SOLO-TRI is a must own. The latter really puts the keyboard above the rack for me, but I'd love to get a TR-Rack some day just for that extra preset bank. I use my Trinity all the time in my music and absolutely love it, it's by far the best synth Korg has ever made and stands with the Ensoniq TS-10, Roland JD-990, and V-Synth as the best digitals ever made~ Amazing video as always!
Absolutely. You have many good points here. I had the Prophcy card installed in my Trinity back in the mid 90s and there were lots of good sounds soming from that.
I picked one of these up about 3 yrs ago, when they were even cheaper. I bought mine after seeing the 2 videos from Synthmania, showing off the combo & motion synth banks.
Replacing the entire display on the TR-Rack is probably going to be very difficult because it's apparently a custom oversized alphanumeric LCD, the part might be very difficult to find aftermarket new. You might have to find used one from parted-out unit. But maybe just the backlight LEDs can be replaced, if that's the problem (even LEDs have finite lives).
Yup - love the Trinity! Bravo. Even compared to the later Triton, it just (for me) has better pads and synth cred. The Triton always sounded more "plastic" to me, if that makes any sense.
Your plastic sounding Triton analogy makes perfect sense as I also felt the same way after selling my Trinity Plus for a fully maxed out Triton with MOSS board in 1999. Whilst the Triton was in many ways a big improvement over the Trinity, the latter just sounded fuller with a more sparkly high end and numerous acoustic samples that were simply better than the Triton such as the pianos, nylon acoustic guitars and saxes. Yes indeed, the Triton was certainly the better instrument in every other way including nearly twice the polyphony, much unproved sequencer, sampler (but no internal resampling), real time controller knobs, dual arpeggiators, much better fx routing, midi syncable LFOs and multi timbral MOSS sounds. The Trinity certainly had a superior digital multimode resonant filter compared to the Triton though and this was clearly evident if you owned both.
Hallo Espen, I've got it, yes, as well as Yamaha Motif-Rack ES (with additional cards). There's still sth. I can learn from this video about my Korg TR-Rack. Thx.
I had a Trinity Rack once as a trade in. I thought it could replace my 05R/W, but it didn't have the same sounds, so I ended up replacing the 05R/W with the better sounding X-5DR.
I have the work station and the module. Life is good. Keyboard is velocity and pressure sensitive. Electric guitar is phenomenal. Nice fat string sounds Korg is known for. Electric pianos are good, Some acoustic guitar sounds are truly amazing. Piano sounds are so so. Reed instruments very good, clarinet, sax, oboe. Some orchestra sounds above average. Brass sounds good as well. 32 polyphony sucks, but you have to realize, ram was in megabytes back then, and so were hard drives!!
My Trinity Pro has some output issues and I've been using it as a midi controller. This makes me want to give it some love and get it working right again.
A rack synth from my birth year, how cool is that! I guess I should have one now because of that :). And it doesn't sound outdated to me, still very usable sounds for today. The sounds are very lush and beautiful and bottom-end for days. Oh, and I love how well it does in a 80s synthpop format situation, like the demonstrated with the song. Fits right in!
Another great video from The Espen! This piece of good looking hardware is from 1998, though notwithstanding you manage to pull off some great 80's sounds from it; Nothing less expected from someone who is THE 80's! :D Anyways, another great rundown of a piece of interesting equipment, good demo of the different sounds, and a pretty neat intro-demo song as well! (More of that to come on bandcamp? ;) ). Ohh, and the anime figure is awesome!!! You definitely made my day! Thank you! :)
I've got a single rack space free that could use something like this, but I just checked the 'bay and they actually cost as much as a Trinity keyboard. I'd say the best deal in ROMplers is still the Alesis QSR if you wait around to find one with the power supply included at a fair price ($150 or less).
The TR Rack has 8 MB more Rom Samples comparing to the Key Version. This 8 MB are mostly Drum Samples. You have also a 'Sound Test Button' which is a great feature for a Rack.
This almost sounds like Anders Jensen's style at the start. Then the second part kind of reminds me of the demo you did for the TX-81Z. Has a very late 80's feel, even though it's a 90's synth. :D
@@EspenKraft Interesting...
Talking of value for money keyboard/synths for vintage sounds; why not check out a personal favorite of mine. The Yamaha DJX - specifically the original blue mark 1 version. I have two which still see regular service. Amazingly pro-sounding keyboards considering they were made as home keyboards essentially. I would love to see your take/review on this. Definitely worth picking one up!
I have a KingKorg. (bought it for $800 CAN demo mint model in 2015). Similar Korg sounds (has MG bass, those pads, M1 organ etc)in it so now it know where it descended from. KingKorg has great sounds and lots of knobs but the keybed feels cheap.
My all-time favorite Korg synth is the Triton second the n 364.back in the day in da early 2000s I had this Trinity rack with the moss board, the Triton was way too expensive for our budget.espen do you have the moss board for Trinity (has great sounds btw)?
Yes. I use FL to sequence my alpha juno and jx-8p. The way to do it is to load up fl's Midi Out plugin in the channel rack. Then you will connect the midi In of your synth to the Midi Out of your audio interface. The komplete Audio 6 is a cheap good interface I reccomend. Then in FL you need to make sure your midi channel is set to the same midi channel as your synth (usually channel 1). Then you load UP FL's Midi Out plugin and make the midi input channel "1" and now the piano roll will play the notes from the synth. It's really easy to set up and convenient
@@carlyjacksonsbad2340 jx10 is great. See if you can get one with the Vecoven midi mod installed, otherwise it will be hard to control unless you get the PG800. Also to save some money I have the D50 plugin and it's REALLY close. But yeah man you got some good taste 👍
So I'm very new to vintage gear like this, but I heard that the Trinity had lots of good sounds from many games I played as a kid and I bought this TR rack version. I just got it in the mail today and I wanted to know, is it normal for this thing to get hot when in use? I don't think it's overheating since it still runs, but my Alesis D4 is also from that time, and doesn't get very hot.
Hooray! Finally Espen features synth that won’t end up driving the price up ( this must be true cause I never have that sort of luck and I already own one😁☝️)......thanks Espen nice feature, it’s a good digital synth isn’t it?! Only thing that would have been nice was if it had expansion card slots etc like its older (M1 & 01w). & younger siblings (triton) ...guess if you want that you go for the Triton but I think the trinity ( especially its resonant filter) has a sound of all it’s own...thanks!
I had a Trinity Plus V3 with the Moss board back at the turn of the millennium, but I sold it to a friend for half a dime and a crate of beer. The Plus V3 is very close to the successor, the Triton, but it sounds more raw, in my opinion. The only thing it lacks is an arpeggiator. Sure you can use the built in sequencer, but it's awkward.
Thanks! No, this is only something I whipped up for this video, to demo the module. I'll might release this and other demo songs on an album later, but it will only be released on Bandcamp. I only release my official songs on Spotify.
Thank you sir for this and all the other playthroughs! That last "Saw Pad" patch though... was that a custom creation? The patch name did not display on the module's screen like all the others...
Thanks! Some of the patches were modified preset patches. Neither was original patches made by me. Can't remember exacty what I did to that Saw Pad though. ;-)
I almost sold my TR but luckily didn't. So many nice sounds, even some Wavestation-like patches which I really like. The display is nice and large, but the knobs are too small. Truly a great addition for any musician in any style.
i was thinking to myself....'thank zod, he didn't play that whitney houston song', when you played the piano patches...... and then 2 minutes later, you played it when you played the multi-key patch. lol.. nice job of throwing a very laid back, easy listening version of 'jump' into there, also. lol

And it doesn't sound outdated to me, still very usable sounds for today. The sounds are very lush and beautiful and bottom-end for days.
Oh, and I love how well it does in a 80s synthpop format situation, like the demonstrated with the song. Fits right in!
I own this beast too ;-))) Great synth
Great unit. Be Safe my friend.
Thanks. You too.
Thank you! :)
I don't mind using a bit of 90s gear as long as I can make it sound 80s he-he... thanks! I though you'd notice the figure. ;-)
@@EspenKraft Indeed! Nice placement there, went very well with the overall scene. :D
I've got a single rack space free that could use something like this, but I just checked the 'bay and they actually cost as much as a Trinity keyboard.
I'd say the best deal in ROMplers is still the Alesis QSR if you wait around to find one with the power supply included at a fair price ($150 or less).
It used to be, now more expensive. I got mine at 150 USD but had to buy a display...
I think will get this module sometime.
The TR Rack has 8 MB more Rom Samples comparing to the Key Version. This 8 MB are mostly Drum Samples. You have also a 'Sound Test Button' which is a great feature for a Rack.
I have one. Didn’t start for many years.
Damn. I have that thing in my desk and never ever use it. Now seing you play it i might have to spend some time with it again.
Do it!
I don't know why, but the Bell Arena sound is always a sound that I associate with the Trinity, even though I've only ever seen it in videos.
This almost sounds like Anders Jensen's style at the start. Then the second part kind of reminds me of the demo you did for the TX-81Z. Has a very late 80's feel, even though it's a 90's synth. :D
Tenks from Brazil
Cheers!
Great tune!
Thanks!
Fin video Espen.
I have one of these and it’s amazing
Those pads wheeeew! 🙌🏾
West... End... Strings... nice.
Yes....it....is. 😊
I got mine in 2019, in great condition, about 250 bucks.
Just took mine out the rack to sell. Need to have a rethink now.
City of Angels - Chord Pad _ FM Bass + MG Lead
You're a very "Good Mood & Happiness" powerful transmitter...
As I don't buy gear to review, that will be hard to pull off unless someone send one to me. ;-)
I had one once. Yes agreed it's good vale though it has more 90s dance sounds really. Controlling it is possible by cc as its Xg compatible
Shhh.. don't jinx it. About ten of these babies are out on ebay right now, for around 100-300 bucks. Get yours today! ;)
Let's see if we can double up the prices. Or more. I have ten of these sitting in the attick wating for new owners... Or do I ? ;-)
I've already got mine.
@Stephen Anthony timbaland used it quite frequently in the late 90s and it had/has great drums and sampling so you are absolutely right. Great module
100-300? Right now it's more like 400 with shipping. Maybe they went after you posted
@@EspenKraft What attick!!! ;-}
I remember when the Korg Trinity was the sexy new keyboard. I wanted one so bad but they were too expensive for me...
Same here so I finally got one (76-key pro version) 3 years ago straight from Japan, 700 bucks. :D
Pet Shop Boys in a box!
I did have it for the Trinity back then yes. The Trinity is long gone, but this module is a fine reminder of many of the sounds I used. ;-)
Hi espen i have a Big question, in Fl studio 20 can record midi equipment from the 80s like Roland D-50 or any other synthesizer
MIDI is that universal ! Most synthesisers from 1983 and on can act as midi contollers / be midi controlled.
@@DoctorNemmo Oh thanks bro
@@kiko1935 thanks i gonna buy a Roland JX10 and Roland D50 thanks bro
Some gear gets hotter than others. ;-)
Thanks! Like I said, excellent value for money.
I love this song in the intro, it will be on spotify? :)
Thanks! No, this is only something I whipped up for this video, to demo the module. I'll might release this and other demo songs on an album later, but it will only be released on Bandcamp. I only release my official songs on Spotify.
Great sounds! I'm particularly impressed with the fat leads! And nice baseball cap from America's finest city! ;)
The Cap made its first entry.. ;-)
Truly a great addition for any musician in any style.
i was thinking to myself....'thank zod, he didn't play that whitney houston song', when you played the piano patches......
and then 2 minutes later, you played it when you played the multi-key patch. lol..
nice job of throwing a very laid back, easy listening version of 'jump' into there, also. lol
I like it, so I play it.. ;-)
Amazing!!
Good video, do you know the ocillators of this program?
- ribbon you head off
Ocillator 1:?
Ocillator 2:?
I don't have the TR-rack anymore.
i might have scored one today if seller replies... You did it again...
Haha... I take some responsibility! ;-)
I enjoy it a lot. You probably won t read this. But thank you 😀
I’ll say this once and I’ll say it again. 90s will be the new 80s soon.
And I dread when that day comes.
Is it me or Korg Trinity Rack sound better than Trinity itself? Thank you from Brazil
Love the tune you created with the Kord Where do you get all this stuff I'm looking for some of the equipment i use to use in the 80's Like the Lexicon Primetime 2 , Lexicon PCM60 Reverb Korg SDD3000 digital delay I tried the SDD3000 UAD plugin version last week and doesn't come near the original I bought (preordered) the SDD3000 when it first came out. I remember a couple of the preset I used and they are not available only Artist created presets. I still haven't tried the modern pedal
Thanks! Some gear have been with me from the 80s while others just turn up in different ways. ;)
