  • A rare 1 on 1 in-depth interview with BILLY CORGAN the legendary Smashing Pumpkins frontman talking about God, loss, music, integrity, loyalty and more. Quite a few shocking statements including that his band's music 'did more harm than good' and that it was 'destructive'. Hmmmm, a very interesting point of view coming from one of its creators.
    Broadcast on CNN International in NOV 2013.
    Sorry for the wrong ratio.

    Why the hell is everyone in the comments surprised that he believes in a higher power? Smashing Pumpkins was literally a spiritual lsd fueled vision. The very first line on their first album is "I am one as you are three, Try to find messiah in your trinity". SP has always been a very emotional/spiritual band. Billy in the early days wore all sorts of crosses and charms around his neck. Believing in something more =/= being a blind devoted follower who ignores science and takes fairy tales as facts. It's like you guys haven't listened to a single SP song

    He always sounds like he is in a constant battle with himself. Almost like he's trying to connivence himself that "your life can change but you're not stuck in vain". But I don't think he really believes it. He wants to. But can't get there. Child abuse will do this. Such a beautiful soul.

    False loyalty is a heavy topic. Corgan has a personality that sometimes brings thorns. But he's just himself. Every single album is soaked in the struggle of understanding faith and the push and pull of making something work in the world and staying true to your love of God. Most of these comments are misinformed and mostly trying to be clever in that oh so sarcastic way, but too often come from folks who are stuck in that time where it worked for them the best. Thing is, artists are not meant to be understood completely but just appreciated. Most musicians now are just entertainers; a pretty face with some carbon copy music that they often had little to do with creating. This man has never auto-tuned, never lip-synced, never compromised his vision to accommodate trends, and has stayed honest despite it making him unpopular. Truth drives away the masses... our culture rewards selfishness and superficiality. A little ranty and off topic, but I always feel compelled to defend real artists, even if I don't always agree with what they say.

    He hit the nail on the head when he said that Christian groups need to stop copying U2. Seriously, it seems like almost every Christian rock band has some element of U2 or praise and worship music. It would be nice to see some more original sounding artists come out of the Christian scene. The subject of God could be the next big thing in rock, but the music itself has to be good.

    If this video proves anything to me, it's that the man who wrote the songs on Gish, Siamese Dream, Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness, Adore, MACHINA and MACHINA II just doesn't exist anymore.
    Thankfully I will always have those albums; they will always mean something to me, the songs will forever connect with me on an emotional and visceral level and their influence will continue to have an impact on the music I write and produce myself.
    But whoever Billy Corgan is now, he's not somebody that I understand or whose work I have any interest in.

People need hope but they don't need more copycats. I think there is still an unexplored sound that someone I hope flushes out. Just as great and amazing as all the years before. I hope I can give some justice to who Christ is musically, I feel like we haven't even scratched the surface.

      Thank YOU...as someone who shares similar beliefs of "god" with a gnostic, pagan or native american i agree. Idiots make me insane too...and i was born a catholic lol but i jumped off that ship the moment i had a choice...Thank nature for gr 8 confirmation and FREE WILL !!
      We can see and touch nature and it is constantly creating just like we are capable of. It seems more plausible to believe "god" is part of us and part of everything than to externalize the source, but we know why that is....people are easier to control and manipulate that way ...not to mention the systematic raping of the earth in the name of "civilization"
      GOD is a man made concept, just like time...humans killed their own sacred connection with the real god(nature) and instead began worshipping a fictional god made up to control others. Man has become obsessed with controlling everything and seems hell bent on destruction for more power.

    No disrespect Billy but you don't know jack about Christian music. I mean yeah as with secular music there are bands that need practice this is no surprise but there are bands that believe in Jesus that are definitely worthy of your respect my friend. I'm not going to get too upset with you over these comments because I do believe you didn't intend any harm and that you thought you knew what you were talking about but unfortunately your perspective looked like it was coming from preconceived bias based on ignorance of the Christian music scene, I mean I'm sure you've heard a few Christian bands and that's fine but you really need to listen to some more of it much more of it before giving a real opinion on the matter or at least state that your understanding of the subject is limited at best before giving your opinion.. I'm just saying.. All that being sad, love you and hope the Lord decides to include you on our team some day. I really do..

      How do you know what his experience is? You are an arrogant dude. Technically he is a Christian who is a rock artist. I think maybe you need to realize that Christian rock sucks for a number of reasons. It is very unimaginative. It is very straight forward. It leaves little to the imagination. People want to be taken away to new places. Christian rock fails to do this over and over again.

    • @SuperSparrow45
      @SuperSparrow45 9 лет назад

      Michael Pavlik Agreed. It's next to impossible to make Christian Rock creative and unique, because there's only a limited number of ways you can sing "God is good all the time". That's why most successful bands avoid god all together or if they do use God, it's generally in a negative or questioning light. They don't praise God for what he's done, but instead question his decision. Rock is meant to tell a story, and unfortunately, a person is going to listen to a song that depicts the HUMAN experience over an entity, because that makes it relatable.

      You can't see because your blind.. If you could see you would at least have some understanding of what I'm saying because it makes sense. Maybe not perfect sense but my reasoning is logical and anybody with any sense could see that. Why would I argue with a blind person about the color's in the sky, it would be pointless and every time you reply it's even more clear. Your replies show your ignorance and lack of understanding..
