  • In this brief yet insightful interview, meet Vitaliy Blazhevich, a 60-year-old sociologist turned English and Russian language teacher for foreigners. Vitaliy shares his careful but candid views on why there is currently no opposition in Russia, detailing the repressive measures the government takes against dissenters.
He reflects on the pivotal year of 2012, when Vladimir Putin was re-elected for another presidential term, despite not having the legal right to do so, marking a turning point for him personally. Vitaliy also opens up about the consequences he faced for expressing honest opinions about his president.
The discussion extends to international politics, where Vitaliy offers his perspective on Donald Trump and Joe Biden. He explains why he believes a Trump victory would be detrimental for everyone. Additionally, the interview touches on the stereotype that Russians are seen as "sheep" by foreigners, with Vitaliy countering that Americans voting for Trump are, in his opinion, more deserving of that label.
Join us for this thought-provoking conversation that sheds light on the complexities of Russian political life and international perceptions.

There are TWO respective groups, in Russia and in the US, both yearning to return their respective societies to some BETTER (imaginary) past.
For the Russians, that imagined superior past they want Russia to return to... it likely is no further back in time than the time the red Hammer & Sickle was flying close to half of the nations of the world.
Because if the Russians (who yearn to return Russia back to some better, superior times)... if they returned Russia too far back, they ended up around the decades/centuries of the Tsar and other BS times like that; I don't think, Lenin, Stalin, or comrade KGB Col. Putin & Co would like THAT, do you?
However, for the Americans --- who also say they yearn to return to some better, more moral, more ethical, more meritocratic past when everyone who followed the law was treated fairer, with better more opportunity to succeed, when meritocracy was really in play --- it is HARDER to pin them down.... it could be the 1950s, or 40s, or 20s or 1890s or 1850s or 1777?
We don't know; THEY DON'T KNOW... bu they say, if American could be returned (politically, educationally, socially, jurisprudentially, scientifically, etc.) to those (imagined) better and fairer times, we would all be better off.
Absolute nonsense, of course... but that's how some twisted people operate...
Anyway, we know who those respective folks are, in Russia and in the USA....

I wish more Americans knew as much about American politics as this Russian.
Quote is Google translated from transcript:
3:37 *"it was a shock for me when people in America voted for Trump*"
A lot of us Americans were surprised by Trump's victory in 2016. Clinton was an unattractive candidate but I held my nose and voted for her.
My favorite joke from the 2016 election:
Question - If Donald Trump and Hillery Clinton were stuck on a desert island, who would win?
    Answer - America.
As this gentleman notes, more Americans did vote for Clinton than Trump. A quirk in America's constitution called the Electoral College gave him the victory.
I'm more surprised by the number of people who want to return to the White House somebody as corrupt as Trump, who tried to use his Presidential power to overturn the results of the last election.
Trump tried to corrupt the Electoral College in his effort to hold on to power after he lost the election. This was among the crimes he would have been charged with until our corrupt Supreme Court made the President immune from prosecution for crimes committed in office if they could be called "official" acts.
A much a threat as I believe Trump's campaign is to America's future as a representative democracy is, it's nothing compared to somebody who tries to influence an election with an attempted assassination.
That's something from Putin's play book. Look at the fate of everybody who has opposed him.

Thanks for your persistence in bringing the real Russia to us.
Do you detect a shift in the average Ruskis’ view of the war?
Suggestion for an episode topic: what can we do to convince Russians that their country is going down a very dark path?

His answers and the questions don't line up with the people walking past. The edit has been used to modify the question to the answer, and we can clearly see this because the background jumps between the question and the answer.
I don't trust this video because it's not a single take. It's a very mixed edit.

Is there a real opposition in the US? No. in the EU? No. In Germany the opposition march was brutally interrupted by the police, same in France. In Canada, your bank account may be frozen if you are too loudly opposing. Russia has a healthy government critique. They do have more patriotic and liberal forces within the government. But the idea of Russia is to maintain a balance, for without it the country would fall apart. The time of opposition is gone, just like the time of democracy.

Thanks for your advice. I guess you missed what just happened in the UK. A government the people had come to despise was replaced. I’ll take an imperfect democracy and the ability to turf out a government I find abhorrent any day over the sort of fear and repression we regularly see in dictatorships. I don’t want to live in fear.
Democracy is not dead just because a phenomenon of the type of Hitler or Trump comes to power. Democracy returned to Germany and it will ultimately prevail in the US.
