The competency model is what came to mind before I began your 3 part video. It is good to get a refresher on what to focus on, what not to focus on and what I do well or not so well. Thanks!
This was a great informative set of videos. It was good to hear a different perspective on skills; quite thought provoking. I'm pursuing a degree in GIScience at Texas State University and I think by working to improve these skills, I can become a better student on my way to becoming a GIS professional. I look forward to viewing other videos on your channel.
As a GIS student in Canada who's writing their first 'real' resume, this video series has given me a better understanding of the sorts of skills I think I should highlight. Thank you for sharing your experience.
Thanks for these insightful explanations about the skills required to be a successful GIS professional. How do you view the future of GIS in the startup ecosystem?
Numerous startups use location or GIS as their way of marketing or their core product. For example, see Mapillary.com which I also have written about and have videos about. community.esri.com/community/education/blog/2019/10/15/citizen-science-street-level-imagery-and-mapping-with-mapillary In short, there are MANY opportunities for startups in geotechnologies... I feel we are just getting started...
Great video series! thanks Joseph. It's funny finding this now a few months later; soon after your talk at Westfield State University I declared a GIS minor. I've since held a few related internships and tutor courses that use ArcMap at Westfield State University, and am considering options for post grad careers, online courses and internships.
+Jacob Lehan Jacob! Your comment makes the creation of these videos all worth it! Thanks and I did have a great time at Westfield State! Hooray! Best wishes to you.
Hi Joseph, thank you so much for this video. It is very insightful. Particularly on building programming skills, could you share some helpful resources or courses I could take.
Going through this series makes me even more bummed that I can't make it to the ESRI UC in San Diego this month...I know you and other potential mentors will be there. Hopefully I can go next year.
I just started a course in Spatial/Surveying with the aim of being a Surveyor, but after doing the GIS side of it, i am seriously considering going that route, if i had known of such a career when i was at high school, i could have save a good ten years plus.
tallaganda83 Yes, glad to hear it. Read the American Surveyor from time to time - great magazine. Also look into the program with Gary Jeffress at Texas A&M Univ Corpus Christi. He is a strong proponent of geodesy, surveying, and GIS - the best one I know who combines all of these.
GIS is lifelong journey🌟 Thanks Joseph

Thanks for sharing that! GIS *started* in Canada as you know and it remains a wonderful place to be studying GIS!
