It's so fitting how sad this music is. It's essentially about a kid who runs away from a rich and comfortable life into poverty because of a parent who's gone crazy. You can feel Gladion's sorrow through it. His mom used to have a heart of gold and now it's dangerous to even be around her. How do you even handle that at his age?

He was a better rival of sorts than Hau in my opinion. He still was a pushover, but he was a bit more defined as a character rather than " FOOD IS GOOD. I GO LOOK FOR FOOD NOW".

I suppose you think Wally, Bianca and Shauna etc. we're rivals too somehow even though Brendan/May, Cheren, and Calem/Serena were the ones holding the rival position.
Gladion's theme is the only music file named rival in this game while Hau's says he's the friend (meaning the devs are telling us who is what and they are not to be argued with). Also, rivals always have the weakness for your starter - just like Gladion's Silvally.
Ben Semegran actually it's theorized that you're the rival as you are always ahead of him and have the type advantage. You're both the main character and the "rival"

It's been quite a while now since this was first uploaded, and I remember listening to this for the first time in a hotel room while visiting a university that I ultimately chose to attend. I'm sitting here in my dorm now, not too far from that hotel, and listening to this again makes me remember how much my life has changed since then.
