    Maybe I missed it but, why use pylons? Was it cheaper than digging down into the hill and doing a passive solar/ earth shelter house?

      Yes, much much cheaper. With the amount of rain in Auckland winters we would have also had waterproofing issues in the future.
      We also have an easement across the section that very much limits the build platform so only a tiny house could have fit underground while now parts of our house cantilever over the easement.
      There was a suggestion that I talk about in Part 2 of the mini series, to dig the lower level into the ground and it wasn’t affordable.
      Lastly, the driveway comes fdown from the top so we would have had even more steps to go down into an underground house. I have bad knees so even to the pile house it’ll be 13 outdoor steps.
      We did give is some good thoughts but unfortunately the idea didn’t work on our budget and land.
